Pyroclastic Stones as Building Materials in Medieval Romanesque Architecture of Sardinia (Italy): Chemical-Physical Features of Rocks and Associated Alterations
The paper discusses the chemical-physical-petrographic features and decay processes of San Nicola Church (11th−14th century) building materials, one of the most representative Medieval Churches in Sardinia, stylistically attributable to the Romanesque architecture. The monument was built up into two stages and shows a characteristic size uniformity of the ashlars. The masonry is mainly made up of rhyodacitic pyroclastites belonging to the Sardinian Eocene-Miocene magmatic phase (38–15 My). These volcanic rocks were widely used in Medieval architecture for the excellent workability, but its minero-petrographic features greatly favor the decay, due to the action of chemical-physical alteration processes. Although the alteration degree and macroscopic forms of decay vary from zone to zone in the monument, according to the different compositional features of the volcanic stones, weathering and exposure condition, the pyroclastic rocks are generally affected by greater alteration than other igneous lithotypes, due to their petrographic-volcanological characteristics (e.g., low-medium welding grade, medium-high porosity). The results concerning mineralogical and petrographic features, respectively, carried out by the application of X-Ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD), Optical Microscope (OM), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) techniques, both on fresh building rocks and associated alterations, are here presented and discussed. Furthermore, the relationships between fresh pyroclastites and alteration processes affecting these rocks will be discussed
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Graffiti removal from granite cladding by abrasive water-jet
This study focuses on the assessment of a graffiti removal system based on abrasive water-jet technology (AWJ). Spray paints were applied on samples of an important Italian granite commercially-named as “Rosa Limbara”. This granite has been used worldwide as dimension stone for paving and cladding. Two different commercial abrasives have been added in the high-pressure water-jet in order to clean the granite saw-plane surfaces from graffiti. After a check by the naked eye, different criteria have been chosen for assessing the effectiveness of the cleaning process: the similarity in roughness (Ra, Rz, and Rmax) between the original surface and the one resulted after cleaning, the total colour difference (ΔE) and the depth of material removed by the AWJ action. The tests showed that excellent cleaning results can be achieved with both abrasives by correctly combining the operational parameters of the technology (i.e., water pressure, spacing between passes, stand-off distance, travel speed and abrasive flow-rate) without giving any damage to the stone material. The two abrasives showed good results in total colour difference although one of them gave better results in both roughness difference and material removal. Economic considerations on paint removal with AWJ technology are also offered
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Alteration of stone materials on Sardinian medieval monuments: physical, chemical and petrographic analysis for their restoration and preservation
Sardinian medieval monuments are mainly made up by volcanic rocks (pyroclastites/ignimbrites), minor granitoids and sedimentary rocks, that show a more or less significant chemical-physical alteration.
Mineral-petrographic features, physical properties related to petrogenetic processes, as well as manufacturing, strongly influence type and intensity of stone-decay.
The granitoids show an alteration degree less than the other rock-types, due to low porosity (<10%) that does not favour an easy absorption of circulating solutions, thus avoiding the water-rock interaction and hydrolysis. In a few cases, a physical intra-crystalline decohesion, that involves a rounding of the sharp edges of ashlars, can occur, while, in chemical/mineralogical terms, oxidation patinas and the chloritization of mica minerals can be observed.
The pyroclastites/ignimbritites, widely used in medieval architecture for the excellent workability, are affected by greater alteration due to the different mineral/chemical composition, mainly including glass (>70%), and physical features (higher porosity, 20-45%) due to a variable welding degree. Chemical alteration is not always evident since is more slow than the physical degradation (with macroscopic forms of pitting, exfoliation, alveolation). The limestones with low porosity (25%) generally show an advanced stages of decay, with physical macroscopic forms similar to those of the pyroclastites. The chemical alteration is also present, in particular on carbonate cement.
To make a contribution to the preservation of sardinian monuments, this paper suggests a new approach to define the different alteration-modes of rocks in function of their local exposure to the weather, studying: 1) the changes of physical properties on surface of stone (porosity, water absorption, micro-morphology) determined through laboratory tests and photogrammetry observations, 2) the alteration phases present on surface (e.g., secondary minerals, soluble salts) determined by mineralogical (XRD) and chemical (XRF) investigations
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
