PhDEating is a fundamental activity. What people eat, how and with whom, what they feel about food, what they do or do not want to eat and why - even who they eat - are of crucial significance in any reading of human behaviour. In this thesis, I consider the diverse and complex uses of food and eating in fiction since 1950, especially that written by women. I argue both that food and eating carry much of the meaning of a novel or story and that the acts of cooking, feeding and eating depicted are inseparable from issues of power and control: individually, interpersonally, culturally, politically. My discussion centres on the writing of Angela Carter, Doris Lessing, Michele Roberts and Alice Thomas Ellis. Drawing on psychoanalytic theory, sociology, anthropology, Foucault, Bakhtin and others, the thesis aims to construct an interdisciplinary perspective which both resists reductive interpretations and emphasises the centrality, complexity and diversity of food and eating in literature in our culture. I begin with an examination of the ambiguities of maternal feeding and nurturing, moving on to explore the links between appetite, eating and sexuality. I explore cannibalism and vampirism as manifestations of oppression, but also as indicating insatiable emptiness and transgressive appetite. The body itself is crucial, and my argument considers the paradox of not eating as control/enslavement, also tracing self-starvation as a positive route towards wholeness and connection. The last part of my argument focuses on social eating, examining conventions, rituals and food itself in connection with power relations, and finally considers how we might truly speak of food and eating in the context of society as a whole

Het ontwerp van een longmodel voor het bestuderen van het transport- en depositiegedrag van vezels

    No full text
Applied SciencesChemische ProcestechnologieDeeltjestechnologi

Abjection in the novels of Marlene Van Niekerk

    No full text
Includes bibliographical references. In this thesis, three of Marlene van Niekerk's novels, translated from Afrikaans into English, are examined, with the focus on the representation of abjection in the texts under discussion. The theoretical point of departure of this study is Julia Kristeva's essay Powers of horror (1982), which addresses, in particular, the notion of abjection and how certain abject elements play a pivotal role in people's everyday lives. From a psychoanalytic perspective, abjection is viewed as a revolt against the mother and foregrounds particularly the influence of the maternal body over the subject. In this instance, the subject desires liberation from the hold of the maternal and seeks to subject the mother to abjection. Bodily fluids seeping out of the body, diseases, viruses, dirt and death (and in particular the corpse) are all elements that are encompassed in the concept of abjection. Manifestations of abjection in the form of the abject mother, abject spaces, abject bodies and the link between abjection and filth are comparatively analysed in the three texts. The thesis concludes by showing that Van Niekerk deliberately inscribes elements of the abject into her texts so as to transgress and deconstruct the norms associated with a patriarchal and racist society in South Africa. Van Niekerk also undermines the norms that underpin such a society: religious indoctrination, gender oppression and Othering. By writing her novel Triomf (1999) in a demotic register, Van Niekerk furthermore questions the prevalent assumptions about what is deemed proper language for writing a novel. Writing, for her, thus serves the purposes of abjecting, of rejecting the impositions of the symbolic order. Following the publication of her first collection of short stories, Die Vrou wat haar verkyker vergeet het [The woman who forgot her binoculars] in 1992, there was general consensus that the baroque nature of the language resulted in reader resistance to the text. This explains why she decided to write her first novel in the crude and obscene language of a low-class family, the Benades of Triomf

La arquitectura moderna en Chile. El caso del Palacio Consistorial de Valdivia, de Angela Schweitzer

Does modern Chilean architecture exist? What works are part of it? For Montaner (1999), in countries like Chile, modern architecture began to develop in the 1930s and 1940s, from the teaching of architects who studied in Europe or the United States. In the Chilean case, he mentions the architect Emilio Duhart and we can also add Roberto Dávila Carson. For the author, in modern Latin American works it is possible to notice a marked influence of the most monumentalist Le Corbusier with a brutalist use of concrete; and to a lesser extent, the teachings of Gropius, van der Rohe, Wright, and Aalto. However, in them the search for an interpretation of the rationalist language is present. In accordance with this, in this article it is proposed that the Palacio Consistorial de Valdivia is an example of modern Chilean architecture and Angela Schweitzer, its author, one of the first modern architects in the country.¿Existe la arquitectura moderna chilena? ¿Qué obras forman parte de ella? Company X is a renowned engineering and technology corporation based in Germany that has established a prominent presence in China for over a century. Company X is actively promoting and leading the way in adopting environmentally friendly technological projects in response to the green energy trend worldwide. A significant step in this direction is introducing their new air-sourced heat pump product line in their Chinese HVAC department, specifically designed to cater to the unique requirements of the local environment and market. This study aims to assist Company X in its transition towards green technology by developing a strategic plan for introducing its new product in the Chinese market. Upon joining Company X, the author assumed the role of an external observer and started the research by reviewing internal documents to understand the company’s current situation and the product itself. The author concludes that a go-to-market strategy is an essential bridge for its product launch since it can help to meet the company’s transitioning from product-driven to emphasising meeting market demands and enhancing user experience.Since this study focuses on developing a go-to-market plan for Company X, highlighting the product’s unique selling point is critical to differentiate from intense market competition. To achieve this goal, the author conducted thorough market and consumer research, which involved studying existing literature, conducting field studies, and gathering feedback through surveys and interviews. From the gathered data, a strategic product launch roadmap was created for Company X. This roadmap offers advice on highlighting features that make the company's heat pump different from others and on effective launch strategies. A key observation was the varied nature of the Chinese market and the specific demands of its consumers. Since user needs and preferences differ from region to region, it is crucial to adapt strategies and, when needed, test them with local partners before a widespread rollout.Interestingly, the research also showed that many consumers are not fully aware of the ASHP product, signalling opportunities for educational initiatives. For Company X to truly resonate with its audience, it is essential to reimagine its brand image, emphasising sustainability and user experience. The ultimate objective is for Company X's new product to resonate with its target audience and capture a significant portion of the ASHP market share.Strategic Product Desig

Historia alternatywna a rosyjskie pragnienia imperialne : "Ukus angela" Pawła Krusanowa

    No full text
The present article consists of two parts. The first part is an analysis of the “imperial syndrome” – a factor shaping contemporary Russian fiction. Russian writers are divided into apologists of the empire and its opponents. Increased interest in the imperial topic in Russia falls on 1998. Works forming the core of the first wave of “imperial fantasy” appeared in the late 1990s (Variant “I” by V. Mihajlov, Тëмная гора by È. Gevorkân, Vybrakova by О. Divov, Sel’va ne lûbit čužih by L. Veršinin and Žavoronok by А. Stolârov). These artists soon found imitators and followers. In the second wave of «imperial fantasy», one can include works of Vyacheslav Rybakov, Dmitry Jankowski and Holm van Zajczyk. Imperial topics are supported by the world-systems theory developed by an American historian and sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein. Owing to this, Russia regains the status of superpower, as in Paul Krusanow’s novel Ukus angela, analyzed in the second part of this article. The author shows Russia regain significance basing its policy on the concepts of Eurasians and pro-Kremlin ideologues in type of A. Dugin and A. Siekacki, and on the Gnostic theory under the sign of G. Gurdjieff

Observation of Vanishing Charge Dispersion of a Nearly Open Superconducting Island

    No full text
Isolation from the environment determines the extent to which charge is confined on an island, which manifests as Coulomb oscillations, such as charge dispersion. We investigate the charge dispersion of a nanowire transmon hosting a quantum dot in the junction. We observe rapid suppression of the charge dispersion with increasing junction transparency, consistent with the predicted scaling law, which incorporates two branches of the Josephson potential. We find improved qubit coherence times at the point of highest suppression, suggesting novel approaches for building charge-insensitive qubits. QRD/Kouwenhoven LabQN/Kouwenhoven LabQN/vanderSarla
