homogeneous plate deformation as monitored by SLR networks and analysed using 3d affine transformation models
No full textThis thesis deals with plate deformation as monitored in widely spaced SLR networks and analysed using the theory of 3D affine transformations, as an alternative for the more conventional strain analysis. The study is done in the framework of the WEGENER-MEDLAS project, a project to investigate crustal motion in the area of the Eastern Mediterranean by repeated determination of a widely spaced network by satellite laser ranging (SLR). Homogeneous deformation of a continuous plate can be described mathematically by a simplified 3D affine transformation model with 12 parameters relating position vectors of the plate’s material points in two different coordinate systems. The affine transformation model is decomposed in translational, rotational and pure deformation components and expressed in both cartesian and spherical coordinates. The 12 affine transformation parameters can be solved for in a least squares adjustment if a sufficient number of points is known in both coordinate systems. Formulating specific coordinate functions, sets of transfoimation parameters can be computed separately. The selection of the coordinate functions is such that only independent combinations between points are used, to avoid singularity in the least squares adjustment due to dependency of the (derived) observations. Plate deformation is monitored by the repeated determination of a widely spaced SLR network. Baselines being the most accurate observables, the distortion of the network is expressed in terms of baseline extensions and affine transformation parameters describing pure deformation of the plate. As the network stations are situated on the surface of the plate a spherical earth with invariant radius is assumed. The horizontal distortion of the network along the surface of the plate is then expressed in terms of angular baseline extensions and affine transformation parameters describing rotation and pure deformation of the plate.Civil Engineering and Geoscience
Long live the elderly: extending independent living by design
No full textThe Dutch population is aging and therefore the Netherlands requires more capacity in care since this is currently not enough. Living independently as long as possible is a solutionand this solution corresponds to the wishes of elderly. Therefore the purpose of this research is to answer the following question: ‘How can architecture extend independent living while supporting elderly (65+) in their feeling of independence in daily life?’ Three types of independence are identified and discussed: the physical, the mental and the emotional independence and these are placed next to the different types of elderly. Because of the importance of feelings in relation to tangible requirements, anthropology and epistemology are the most used methodologies in this research. A difference has been made between environments that stimulate/heal and between environments that help/deals with your abilities. Nature has a big impact on the physical and mental independence, while people also like to show their identity as well as having their own place, which allows them to create a home feeling. Since every person is different, the environment should be diverse so this place can be inclusive. A neighborhood should stand on its own in order to let the people live independently for as long as possible. When growing old your health will deteriorate, this is confronting. Architecture is changeable, life is not. Personalized design process for persuasive technologies
No full textIn this position paper we discuss the application of personalization in persuasive technology design in light of the Personalized Design Process model (PDP-model). The PDP-model defines personalization as aligning a persuasive product to the end-user by stakeholder involvement (i.e. designers, endusers, domain experts and family/relatives) across the Problem Definition-, the Product Design- and/or the Tailoring design phases. It is expected that personalization in a PDP enhances the motivation of end-users to interact longer and more frequently with a product, increasing the likelihood that the product will reach its aimed-for effect. Although personalization in a PDP is a common method in persuasive product design, its added value has not been sufficiently validated by scientific research. We propose several reasons for the frequent use of personalization in a PDP, despite the lack of evidence for its added value. PLEX as input and evaluation tool in persuasive game design: Pilot study
No full textOne of the main objectives in game design is to create game experiences that enhance the motivation to start and continue to play the game. To gain insight into which game experiences can be evolved by the game, designers have been using PLEX cards in the user input phase or in the product evaluation phase of the design process. However, to our knowledge, no research has been conducted to check if the PLEX gathered design input experiences matches the experiences that are evolved by the game in the final design. This study checks if such a use of PLEX is possible in a game design procedure for youngsters in treatment for drug addiction. Youngsters firstly selected their preferred PLEX experiences. Secondly, a game designer created a prototype based on the user’s motivating experiences and a prototype based on the user’s least motivating experiences. Thirdly, other youngsters from the addiction clinic evaluated both prototypes by selecting the PLEX cards that matched their game experiences best. Results suggested that motivating PLEX experiences resulted in a better tailored prototype. However, PLEX experiences derived in the user input phase could not be matched one-on-one to the ones in the evaluation phase.
