    The main topic of this thesis is the website Pottermore created by Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling. The interactive website is a new phenomenon in the literary world. The purpose of this thesis is to gain insight in the different functions that Pottermore can fulfill for both the author/maker of the site and the reader/visitor of it, in relation to the Harry Potter book series by J.K. Rowling. The website operates in a literary field that is not used to having additional information about a story on an interactive website. Pottermore has a navigating, interpreting and immersive function for the audience. For the author it is a way to protect her intellectual property and for the publishing house and the marketing team Pottermore has a huge commercial function

    This research examines tourism representations that are based on two popular narratives: the novel series The Corfu Trilogy by British author Gerald Durell and the screen adaptation The Durells. Landscaping as a process is the focus of this study; the two narratives engage in representations of both the natural and cultural landscape of Corfu, while British and Greek tourism discourses appropriate these representations to promote Durell tourism in the island. After an investigation of the dominant themes in the two narratives, British and Greek online tourism discourses are being analused on the basis of the identified themes. The research focuses on critical discourse analysis of both official and unofficial websites and webpages that promote Durell tourism and argues that there are significant variations in the process of landscaping between British and Greek tourism discourses. The historical, cultural and political tentions that are identified reveal the contestation of mutual heritage in Corfu and highlight the island’s cultural marginality. While the focus of this study is the dialogue between British and Greek tourism discourses, British discourse reveals the longing for a stoic approach to travel, while Gerald Durell seems to embody the ideal traveller who perfectly balances between hedonism and stoicism. Finally, the same framework used for the analysis could be applied to analyse more tourism representations inspired by popular narratives that involve cross-cultural participants

    Within the framework of art and culture studies with a specialization in tourism studies, this pre-master thesis focuses on the relationship between (digital) media and tourism. Specifically, at the representation of Marrakesh as a travel destination from the perspective radiated by three different platforms of the Dutch media. By taking a closer look at the specific image and some of the additional text content that these online platforms provide, the Western appeal, the image and the representation (the presence of an Orientalist view) of this destination can be recognised and understanded.     Looking Down from the Dom Tower with a Romantic Gaze: A Visual Analysis of Postcards in the City of Utrecht

    Postcards are a unique cultural text that can be used to develop an understanding of the role of visual images in the representation of a country, city or area. Postcards are intended to present a visual narrative of a specific place by shaping the viewer’s gaze and providing symbols for consumption. Due to the city of Utrecht’s increasing number of tourists and investments, postcards from this location are analysed in this thesis to examine how they represent the city. The various images presented in the postcards are analysed through visual content and semiotic analysis drawn from John Urry’s theory of the tourist gaze. Important recurrent motifs are the cultural heritage, social space, nature and the romantic gaze. It is concluded that Utrecht is represented by postcards as a city with many cultural sights, and that it is depicted from a romantic perspective in a quiet and green environment

    City branding for tourism: the power of image selection

    This study aimed to analyze and identify the main similarities and differences in the city branding strategy for tourism in The Netherlands, with a particular focus on The Hague, Utrecht and Rotterdam. The aspect taken into consideration was the selection of identities and images to be communicated to a desired target audience. The prospect chosen to evaluate the effectiveness of this process has been the selection of 10 pictures taken from the branding toolkit of each city. This thesis is composed of three themed chapters, each of them dealing with different aspect of branding: the first clarifies which identities have been chosen, the second presents a reflection on how the target audience is treated, and the first contains the branding toolkits analysis. Every chapter is subdivided into three parts: an introduction, a theoretical framework, and an analysis linked to the chapter’s main theme. Findings indicated that even though the first two steps may be defined - by historical reasons, city’s assets or more effective marketing strategy -, this does not automatically translate into coherent image selection

    This thesis creates new perspectives within the gender research concerning Het verdriet van België (The Sorrow of Belgium) by shying away from traditional analysing methods and incorporating modern gender theories instead. By combining the method of feminist literary criticism with the theories of Judith Butler, Gwennie Debergh, Hélène Cixous and Jacques Lacan, amongst others, a theoretical framework was built. This enabled the analysis of the influences of the social constructions of matriarchy or patriarchy on the gender construction of the nuns, Baekelmans, Constance Seynaeve and Madam Laura and whether these change during the progress of the story
