Closing the Loop: Alisea's Evolution Through Circularity and Business Model Innovation
The growing importance of concepts as circular economy and industrial
symbiosis paved the way for setting up a tighter set of interconnections
between different sectors and collaborations within different companies belonging
to different sectors. The purpose of this work is to examine how collaboration
within small and big companies can influence business model innovation,
including industrial symbiosis and circular practices within them.
The company that was chosen for this investigation is situated in the Veneto
region, Italy. This case study involves a manufacturer of recycled graphite pencils
Alisea s.r.l which represents an important example of collaboration between
companies of different sizes and encourages sustainable practices. In this context,
the work attempted to analyze how strong specialization of the sector and
collaboration between companies and how sustainability, implemented through
the reduction of waste production and the use of by-products has influenced the
business model innovation of the company
Integrating Territorialization, Circular Economy, and Industrial Symbiosis: Leveraging GIS for Enhanced Efficiency in Industrial Zones
Territorialization, Circular Economy and Industrial Symbiosis represent key concepts in the context of industrial areas. Present days industrial settings and plans are characterized by a growing attention towards sustainable development, and the processes of territorialization are more and more meant to address a responsible use of natural resources and territory planning in order to maximize efficiency and reduce environmental impact. This challenge involves creating a connection where industrial areas develop clusters, with interconnected business establishing proximity to leverage synergies, share resources, and expertise. Industrial symbiosis and circularity can be facilitated by clusters, which can contribute to sustainability. The purpose of this study is to address circular economy and industrial symbiosis in a spatial analytical framework, proposing a combined methodology of addressing the spatial organization of industrial areas to promote circular activities. A traditional locational analysis method is adapted to circularity and, in this framework, different steps were proposed, involving the use of Geographical Information System (GIS) in the visualization and analysis of an industrial area, with a particular focus on a case study of the industrial area in Trieste. The GIS method enables the mapping of resources, infrastructure, and potential synergies among businesses. The implementation of a geographical database for an initial visual analysis can be a first support to stakeholders in identifying opportunities for cooperation, resource sharing, and optimization of synergy. By adopting this methodology, economic sustainability is not only promoted but also environmental impact is minimized, and a resilient industrial community is established. The importance of this paper lies in highlighting how the GIS approach can help support circular economy policies by providing a foundation for sustainable planning and management of industrial areas
Who takes care of the burden of emotions in palliative care workers? A study with the job demands-resources perspective
Background: This study aims to investigate the risks and challenges that palliative care workers face in their daily work and their relationships with a source of stress typically associated with working closely with end-of-life issues: compassion fatigue, a condition of emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and impaired ability to feel empathy. The Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model was used as a theoretical framework to understand and interpret the relationships between individual and work demands and resources of palliative care professionals with their perceptions of well-being and their levels of compassion fatigue. Specifically, we focused on surface acting (the need to manipulate the expression of one's real emotions), emotional self-efficacy, and the perceived meaningfulness attributed to work. We hypothesized that compassion fatigue was positively related to job demand and negatively related to job resources. Conversely, we hypothesized that perceived well-being was positively associated with job resources and negatively associated with job demand. Methods: The sample consisted of 236 palliative care workers (physicians, nurses, social and health workers, psychologists) from facilities distributed throughout Italy. The structural equation modeling (SEM) technique was used. Results: The results confirmed the hypothesized protective role of the meaningfulness of work and emotional self-efficacy, and the detrimental role of surface acting. Conclusions: With the present study, we aim to contribute to a better understanding of how to support the psychological and physical well-being of those who devote their professional lives to providing care and comfort to terminally ill individuals
Dialogues on Cross-Border Rail Transport: A Participative Approach
This work is part of the project “Digitalisation of rail transport communication at border crossing between Italy and Slovenia - T4RAIL” within the Interreg VI A Italia – Slovenia 2021-2027 program. This project aims to tackle the issues frequently observed within the cross-border region encompassing the Italy-Slovenia border. The project is particularly focused on the challenges arising from the absence of seamless integration between the regional and national transportation systems, resulting in inadequate infrastructure for facilitating cross-border mobility. This, in turn, leads to congestion, which is a major contributing factor to the overall challenges in this area. In this context, the objective of this work is to disseminate the initial results obtained through the organisation of a participatory event. This event involved the construction of a methodology through two focus groups. The purpose of the focus groups was to investigate the challenges and opportunities arising from technological improvements in cross-border rail transport. In the first focus group, the emphasis was placed on the pivotal operational, economic and environmental aspects. Conversely, the second focus group directed its attention towards the labour market and, consequently, to the territorial and social aspects
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
