From Albania to Brazil: Ismail Kadaré's Broken april and its filmic adaptation, Walter Salles' Abril despedaçado
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente, Florianópolis, 2007The aim of the present study is to analyse how issues of Albanian national identity are portrayed in Ismail Kadaré's novel Broken April (Prilli i Thyer), and how such features have been appropriated and translated onto the screen into a Northeastern Brazilian context. I depart from the premise that, even though Brazilian elements are indeed shown in the film, the non existence of the Kanun in Brazil, and the use of narrative techniques different from the ones employed in the novel render the story of the blood feuds in the film more universal than the genuinely Albanian reality depicted in the novel. In sum, the appropriation transcends the Albanian reality into a universal context, showing, at the same time, elements which are typical of the Brazilian culture.O objetivo do presente estudo é analisar como questões sobre a identidade nacional Albanesa são retratadas no romance Abril Despedaçado (Prilli i Thyer), de Ismail Kadaré, e como tais questões foram apropriadas e traduzidas para a tela num contexto Nordestino-Brasileiro.
Safety and clinical efficacy of golimumab in the treatment of arthritides
Ismail Simsek, Yusuf YaziciNew York University School of Medicine, NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, New York, USAAbstract: Golimumab is a human anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha monoclonal antibody that was recently approved for the treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. This review covers the published clinical trial data on the use of golimumab for the approved indications mentioned above with respect to efficacy and safety. The various ongoing trials for golimumab have yielded promising results in terms of efficacy and safety in methotrexate-naive and -resistant patients with rheumatoid arthritis, as well as in patients who were previously treated with other anti-TNF agents. In addition, the efficacy of golimumab in psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis has also been demonstrated. The real safety information will be available only once the drug has been used in many more patients, who frequently have comorbid conditions. Keywords: arthritis, rheumatoid, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondyliti
Bu makalede Gezgin'in bahsi geçen kitabı incelenmiştir. Anahtar Kelimeler: Tarih yazımı, Herodotos, Sosyal Karşılaştırma Teoremi, Proksemik Yasa, Söylem Analizi Abstract: Discussions that the history writing cannot be objective go back to beginning of the 19th century. This discussions have come to a peak in 1990s, positivist methods have been rejected in many countries. Since its subject is the human, the idea to evaluate history and historical texts written by humans according to human psychology is now accepted by many academicians. In order to realize this, it is necessary that interdisciplinary studies should be generalized. Associate Professor İsmail Gezgin from Ege University has prepared his work, Herodotus in the Mirror, within the framework of above ideas. In this work, Gezgin has tried to identify the processes that Herodotus had gone through and used some theories and methods of social psychology, environmental psychology and community psychology while doing that. In this article, mentioned book by Gezgin is analysed. Keywords: Historiography, Herodotus, Social Comparison Theory, Proxemics, Discourse Analysi
Generalization of Q-apostol-type eulerian numbers and polynomials, and their interpolation functions
In a recent paper [16], generating functions in terms of non-negative real parameters, q-Eulerian type polynomials and numbers (or q-Apostol type Frobenius-Euler numbers and polynomials) have been constructed by Y. Simsek. Additionally, some identities for these polynomials and numbers based on the generating functions and functional equations have been derived. Finally, a multiplication formula for the generalized Apostol type Frobenius-Euler polynomials has been given. In this paper, as a continuing study of [16], we will essentially present generalizations of the above material and, differently from aforementioned paper, we will express the interpolation functions related to these numbers and polynomials

Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Chemical characterization, functionality, and baking quality of intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium)
Intermediate Wheatgrass (IWG) is a perennial crop with environmental benefits such as reduced soil and water erosion, and increased nitrogen fixation. However, farmers will be reluctant to plant this crop without an established market, which relies on the characterization of IWG grains for parameters relevant to food use. The objective of this study was to analyze IWG for the grains’ chemical composition, functionality, and baking properties. Sixteen IWG lines along with one bulk IWG sample and wheat controls were analyzed for proximate composition, dietary fiber, starch composition, and gluten forming proteins, following standard analytical procedures. Starch pasting properties were monitored using a rapid visco analyzer. Dough rheology was assessed using farinograph and Kieffer. Bread baking tests were also performed following AACCI method. Compared to wheat, IWG samples had higher protein, ash, and dietary fiber contents, yet were deficient in high molecular weight glutenins, an important protein component responsible for dough strength and elasticity. The fat content of IWG samples were similar to those of wheat, but total starch content was lower. Amylose/amylopectin ratio, however, was similar to that of wheat. Rheological data showed weaker IWG dough strength compared to that of wheat. These findings suggest that IWG has a superior nutritional profile, but poses challenges for baked products that require dough rising properties. These results can be explained by the lack of gluten network formation and the higher fiber content that competes with protein and starch for water. This data will assist in future breeding efforts for the development of IWG lines suitable for food applications. This project’s success will also advance cereal science industry to provide highly nutritious products to address consumer’s demand
