    ToF-SIMS of Polyphosphate Glasses

    No full text
Phosphate glasses have been investigated in detail, due to their interesting optical properties: low dispersion, high refractive index and high transparency for ultraviolet light. More recently, the low processing temperature of zinc and iron phosphates as well as their chemical durability opened the possibility for new applications, such as immobilization of nuclear wastes and biomechanical properties. Polyphosphate glasses have also been investigated for their anti-wear properties, since almost all common engine oil additives contain phosphorus and are able, under sliding conditions, to react on steel surfaces to form a protective tribofilm mainly constituted of glassy polyphosphates The characterization of the surface chemistry of such glasses turns out to be a key step for understanding their mechanism of action. In this work zinc and iron phosphate glasses of different chain length were synthesized and characterized by means of ToF-SIMS. ToF-SIMS was able to successfully differentiate between the samples of different composition

A critical survey of the materials and techniques of Charles Henry Sims RA (1873-1928) with special reference to egg tempera media and works of art on paper

    No full text
This thesis collates and provides new knowledge about the working practices and dissemination of materials and techniques of a leading Edwardian painter. Charles Sims RA (1873-1928) represents a neglected body of British artists who were responding to and assimilating certain new tendencies within early modernism yet at the same time were conscious and respectful of traditional practices and training methods. The study makes consistent reference to the extensive studio archive at Northumbria University whose existence has provided a unique opportunity to map Sims’ own informal working notes and observations, against the retrospective account Picture Making (1934) by his son, and instrumental and technical analyses performed on some works. The significance of this specific period in relation to the development of new materials and techniques, and the role instruction manuals and teaching played in developing Sims' stylistic and at times thematic approaches to practice are also discussed. Of particular interest are those which focus on drawing, watercolour and egg tempera techniques, media which perfectly suited Sims' temperament and arguably featured in and formed his best works. The thesis also aims to compare Sims' working practices with those of his better known contemporaries such as Augustus John, Philip Wilson Steer, William Orpen (all from the Slade) as well as members of the Tempera Revival movement. by crossreferencing reports held in national and international collections with hitherto unseen material. As a consequence the research will have a much wider application beyond the field of conservation, and will illuminate early 20th century artistic inheritance and intent

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) in Underground Mines - The SIMS and NEXGEN SIMS projects [Elektronisk resurs] : [Batterimaskiner i underjordsgruvorna – SIMS och NEXGEN SIMS projekten]

    No full text
Replacing diesel machines with electric vehicles in underground mines has been widely acknowledged by the mining industry as a critical step to improve working conditions by reducing diesel exhaust contaminants, whilst also lowering mine ventilation electrical power cost by reducing mine airflow requirement and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. All of these are major requirements to achieve sustainable future underground mining practices, including a target of zero carbon emissions and a very low concentration of atmospheric contaminants in workplaces.Among all types of electric vehicles, Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) is the most suitable for underground mining application due to its flexibility. With the recent developments in battery technology, reliable BEVs have been manufactured since 2016. However, an investigation must be carried out to ensure their smooth introduction. Therefore, the European Union (EU) has funded two projects namely SIMS and NEXGEN SIMS where several BEVs were trialled at several EU mines. This paper outlines some results of these trials which include, among others, improvement of working conditions, power consumption, perception of the mineworkers, and perception of the mine management. Moreover, perception of the management of mines that are not part of the project consortium but have trialled BEVs is also outlined in this paper.</p

Characterization of Functional Films on Solid Substrates by Tof-Sims

    No full text
In the last few years the creation of functional films on solid substrates has become increasingly attractive in particular with the aim of functioning silicon based-electronic devices with biological molecules. TOF-SIMS is a useful technique to characterize the films at the submicrometer scale because of its surface selectivity and molecular specificity. However the use of TOF-SIMS is limited by the difficulty in the quantification particularly for organic materials. We performed experiments on silicon oxide substrates covered by polysiloxanes to which organic molecules simulating biological molecules («probes») were attached by covalent binding. In the present paper: 1) we show that the fragmentation pattern is dominated by large molecular weight fragments assigned to the probes; 2) we demonstrate by two independent techniques that quantitative information can be extracted from TOF-SIMS data utilising the intensity of the relevant peaks assigned to the probe
