He was the first in his family to attend OSU. After graduating from high school in 1948, Simpson attended OSU for two years before a two-year stint in the Navy. Before his military service, Simpson lived in a group house that included a Great Dane owned by the landlord. After his service, he lived in OSU’s military housing on the west campus, with his wife and baby daughter. Simpson describes various aspects of campus, including class sizes, buildings and graduation. He also recounts various aspects of his life afterward

    An investigation into the early life of the World Cycle Road Racing Champion, Tom Simpson. The concern is that the culture of his Co. Durham childhood home, Haswell, has been largely ignored in previous studies of his life. Images are taken largely from Tom's presence at the 1958 Empire Games and present-day Haswell.The Empire Games images were taken by the locally-based Ron Good whose documentation of cycle racing for over 40 years is largely undervalued and unknown. This particular file was bequeathed to myself prior to his untimely death.</div
