Ella C. Boise, a secretary for the Votes for Women League in Fargo, North Dakota, wrote this letter on July 18th, 1914, to Lucile Atcherson, a leader in the Ohio women's suffrage movement. Atcherson had requested to borrow a banner from the Votes for Women League, and in the letter Boise informs Atcherson that the organization was having a banner made which they were willing to loan to Atcherson for her event. The Franklin County Woman Suffrage Association was formed in 1912, after the Ohio Constitutional Convention elected to bring to a vote the question of removing the words "white male" from the state constitution with regard to voting rights. Headquartered in the Chamber of Commerce building in Columbus, Ohio, the organization put out regular publications, organized public speeches and meetings, distributed literature and held parades in support of the suffrage movement. Women's suffrage in Ohio was defeated in a special election in 1912 and again in 1914 and 1916 before a resolution narrowly passed in 1917 allowing municipal voting by women in Columbus. In 1920, the 19th Amendment passed, extending the vote to women and prohibiting state and federal government from denying suffrage on the basis of sex

    No full text
The Simpsons is a television show that in the year 2023 premiered its 35th season, making it the longest-running primetime animated series in the history of television. Although feminism is part of the plot of The Simpsons, it is not an element that has received much academic attention. It is along these lines that we present an analysis of the gender representations promoted by the show, with respect to women roles -especially in the public space- based on the identification of gender' stereotypes present and those attitudes that report the patriarchal order in the actions of the character of Lisa Simpson. Nineteen episodes from seasons 1 to 8 of The Simpsons were analyzed in depth. Of these 19 episodes starring Lisa Simpson, only 5 exceeded the Bechdel test -which was one analysis tool - that is, 26%. The analysis of the episodes confirms what the authors who work on this series had already anticipated: the show reinforces the sexual division of labor, gender mandates on family organization and gender roles within the family, i.e., conservative sexual politics. Although Lisa Simpson is a character who questions these logics, the decision of the scriptwriters is that she pays a high price for not conforming to gender mandates: the character's loneliness and unpopularity is suffered by her. Even so, Lisa Simpson's character allows some permeability to deepen relevant issues in terms of gender, such as: inequality, the myths of romantic love, domestic work, gender-based harassment, aesthetic violence, among others.Fil: Cano, Julieta Evangelina.
