Comparison of ventriculotomy vlosure with and without a coelomic fat patch in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica)

    No full text
Removal of foreign bodies from the ventriculus in birds may necessitate ventriculotomy. Complications with this intervention include leakage and adhesion formation. To investigate if the use of a coelomic fat patch and a tension-relieving suture in addition to a simple interrupted pattern would improve the healing process after ventriculotomy, 2 groups of 9 Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) underwent ventriculotomy. In group 1, only simpleinterrupted and tension-relieving sutures were used for closure of the ventriculotomy. In group 2, a coelomic fat patch from the surrounding adipose tissue was applied to the incision site in addition to the sutures. All quail recovered normally and were considered clinically healthy after surgery. Three birds from each group were euthanatized at days 7, 14, and 21 after surgery. On histologic examination, the suture techniques used for closure of the ventriculotomy led to minimal inflammation of the surrounding tissues in both groups. Serosal inflammation was significantly greater in group 2 birds that had the adipose patch at closure compared with group 1 birds. Therefore, the use of a coelomic fat patch to cover the site of ventriculotomy did not result in an improved healing process and its use is not recommended in quail

Achieving OAI PMH compliancy for CDS/ISIS databases

    No full text
Purpose – The main purpose of this paper is to present the work recently carried out by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with Associazione per la documentazione le biblioteche e gli archivi (DBA) in Italy to make web CDS/ISIS-based applications compliant with the OAI-PMH. CDS/ISIS is an Integrated Storage and Information Retrieval System of Unesco, which is widely used especially in Latin America and Africa. There are hundreds of CDS/ISIS-based application systems managing bibliographical reference, ensuring high quality content through the use of built-in authority files, data entry guidelines and validations. It also allows for metadata export in many different formats. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology adopted included study, analysis and evaluation of three existing solutions for exposing metadata from the CDS/ISIS database repositories to the OAI framework. Findings – The implementation did not include the development of automatic procedures for incremental harvesting from CDS/ISIS databases nor the normalization of the harvested data. However, a lot of experience in implementation of OAI was gained which will be useful for future development of non-CDS/ISIS systems. Research limitations/implications – The research and development work demonstrates the importance and implications of this work for the whole CDS/ISIS community and specifically for the participating centres from the AGRIS network. Originality/value – It proposes an open source, easily parametrizable plug-in tool, which can be adapted to expose metadata from a general structure CDS/ISIS database using the OAI-PMH protocol. This work assures that semantically rich metadata for agricultural science and research publications based on the “AGRIS Application Profile” can be handled by the OAI protocol. This in turn allows for further creation of additional services based on the exchange of knowledge on agricultural science and technology publications world-wide

Surgical removal of a retrobulbar adenoma in a Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus)

    No full text
A Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus) was presented with exophtalmos and a semi-solid mass dorsonasal to the left eye leading to vetrotemporal deviation of the globe. Ultrasonography of the eye revealed a well demarcated mass of cystic appearance, dorsonasal and retrobulbar of the left eye. Cultures of the mass (FNA) were negative for any bacteria and Mycoplasma spp. Metaplasia of a periorbital gland due to hypovitaminosis A was suspected and Vitamin A supplementation was initiated. Due to unresponsiveness to therapy, surgical removal of the cystic mass was performed. The histological diagnosis was adenoma. The surgical wound healed well and no recurrence was noted ten months later. To the authors knowledge this is the first report of surgical removal of a retrobulbar adenoma in this species with the eye remaining intact and functional

Lumbar osteosarcoma in a chinchilla (Chinchilla laniger).

An 11-year-old male chinchilla was presented for investigation of progressive weight loss, apathy, anorexia, changes in faecal quality and alopecia on the tip of the tail. On clinical examination, a stiffness of the back legs was noted. Abdominal palpation revealed a hard immobile, irregular structure in the region of the last lumbar vertebrae. Subsequent radiography and ultrasonography suggested the presence of neoplasia. The following day the chinchilla was showing hindlimb paralysis, and there was severe self-trauma to the distal 5 cm of the tail. In view of the rapid clinical deterioration, the chinchilla was euthanased with the owner's consent. Macroscopic examination supported the clinical suspicion of neoplasia. Histopathological examination revealed a reactive osteoblastic osteosarcoma. To the author's knowledge, this is the first report of osteosarcoma in chinchillas

Bispectral index reveals death-feigning behavior in a red kite

Red kites (Milvus milvus) are raptors known to feign death in the presence of humans. An adult wild red kite (Milvus milvus), ASA II, underwent coelioscopy. Butorphanol was administered before induction of anesthesia which was maintained with 1.5% isoflurane in oxygen. Intraoperatively, heart rate and respiratory rate ranged from 240 to 260 bpm and from 16 to 28 brpm, respectively. Pupil and corneal reflexes were always present. Body temperature was maintained at 40.4°C. Suppression ratio was 0 during the whole anesthesia. Bispectral index was 44 immediately after intubation, ranged from 44 to 57 during maintenance of anesthesia and at the moment of extubation it was 59. The index rose up to 85 within a minute while the kite remained immobile under the suspicion of feigning death in sternal recumbence. The bird was perched keeping immediately the upright position. This fact confirmed the correspondence of the BIS value (85) with a fully conscious patient. Whereas behavioral or cardio-respiratory variables remained unchanged, the degree of hypnosis was uncovered by BIS, which anticipated a possible sudden awakening episode of the kite

Gastrointestinal obstruction caused by a radiolucent foreign body in a green iguana (Iguana Iguana)

This report describes an intestinal obstruction in a green iguana (Iguana iguana). The patient was presented with vomiting and subtle signs of abdominal pain. Radiographs and ultrasound imaging did not reveal any abnormalities. A coeliotomy was performed and a 30-cm piece of absorbent cotton was removed surgically from the large intestine

Liposarcoma in a veiled chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus)

A three year-old male veiled chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus) with clinical signs of anorexia and distended coelom was evaluated. Radiographs and ultrasonography revealed coelomic and pericardial effusion. Coelomocentesis and pericardiocentesis yielded a modified transudate. Based on the poor response to symptomatic therapy with a poor prognosis the chameleon was euthanized. The histopathological examination of lung, liver, heart and kidney tissue revealed proliferation of poorly differentiated cells with pleomorphic nuclei and abundant, finely vacuolated cytoplasm, a typical feature of liposarcoma. This is the first diagnosis of a liposarcoma with metastasis in several organs of a veiled chameleon
