Tagging of Biomedical Articles on CiteULike: A Comparison of User, Author and Professional Indexing
This paper examines the context of online indexing from the viewpoint of three different groups: users, authors, and professional indexers. User tags, author keywords and descriptors were collected from academic journal articles, which were both indexed in Pubmed and tagged on CiteULike, and analysed. Descriptive statistics, informetric measures, and thesaural term comparison shows that there are important differences in the use of keywords between the three groups in addition to similarities which can be used to enhance support for search and browse. While tags and author keywords were found that matched descriptors exactly, other terms which did not match but provided important expansion to the indexing lexicon were found. These additional terms could be used to enhance support for searching and browsing in article databases as well as to provide invaluable data for entry vocabulary and emergent terminology for regular updates to indexing systems. Additionally, the study suggests that tags support organisation by association to task, projects and subject while making important connections to traditional systems which classify into subject categories
Downstream Evolution of Perturbations in a Zero Pressure Gradient Turbulent Boundary Layer
This abstract examines the evolution of perturbations generated by various trips in a turbulent boundary layer. Measurements taken using hot wire anemometry show that the evolution towards the natural state is strongly dependent on the formation mechanisms of the boundary layer, this being different for different wall normal distribution of the trips' blockage. It is observed that standard boundary layer properties are recovered, after an adaptation region, with higher momentum thickness than the natural case. Two-point measurements with time resolved velocity in the inner region are studied to explore the different formation mechanisms
Triple decomposition of a fluctuating velocity field in a multiscale flow
A method for the triple decomposition of fluctuating velocity in a multiscale flow, suitable for a spatiotemporal data set, is presented. It is applied to experimental data gathered by means of particle image velocimetry (PIV). The basic properties of the decomposed parts are shown. The presented method is then used to perform a conditional study on the residual transverse velocity fluctuations. It was found that phase locking occurs between the stochastic fluctuations embedded in the wakes of different bars, appearing after the wakes have merged

This sketchbook follows the footsteps of two American explorers, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, as they explored and mapped the Missouri and Columbia Rivers from 1804-1806, and made contact with the Indigenous peoples along the way. The author has also included travel suggestions and a travel itinerary for those interested in following in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark. Portfolio of recorded performances and exegesis: Messiaen’s musical language for the jazz pianist - an exploration through performance.
Moving beyond Gunther Schuller’s Third Stream amalgamation of classical and jazz, this study explores whether the musical language of Olivier Messiaen can make a valid contribution to jazz piano performance. Initially, my project sought to answer such questions as: What elements of the musical language of Messiaen already exist in the jazz vocabulary? Am I able to extend this further? What are the timbral structures and pianistic effects within Messiaen’s musical language? What will be the most effective application of Messiaen’s musical language to jazz piano performance? Endeavouring to answer the final question led me to consider such aspects as whether the project should be limited to quoting Messiaen motifs, arranging Messiaen melodies, replacing jazz harmonic structures on standards with examples from Messiaen’s musical language or whether it would be better to approach the research conceptually. The work of Hubert Nuss provided encouraging reassurance that this was not an impossible task. In order to articulate this conception, the initial challenge was to decide how the classical and jazz worlds might meet in a ‘Messiaen’ technique. The approach adopted was similar to that used for undergraduate jazz study, namely, immersion in the piano scores and recordings of Messiaen’s music as well as by live performances. This was followed by the development and assessment of a contrived approach when specific techniques, such as tonal colourings or harmonic structures, were developed through prepared exercises and consciously included in my performance. It was then compared with an intuitive approach when no such precise parameters were established. This submission consists of CD recordings of two public recitals and an exegesis. It documents the development of this Messiaen technique and discusses its application in my performances. distinctive sites it is made up of: Washerwoman Creek, Sandy Shoreline and the Mitigated Wetland. Each site also has a different water type. This location has been affected by
events such as hurricanes, oil spills, rainstorms etc. Recently closed by the city of Pensacola due to hurricane damage, Bruce Beach will be eventually turned into a recreational
park for children. The first step in this process is establishing healthy waters in hopes that this historic site will be reopened to the public one day for all to enjoy
Determining underlying presence in the learning of grammars that allow insertion and deletion
The simultaneous learning of a phonological map from inputs to outputs and a lexicon of phonological underlying forms has been a focus of several research efforts (Jarosz 2006; Apoussidou 2007; Merchant 2008; Merchant & Tesar 2008; Tesar 2014). One of the numerous challenges is that of computational efficiency, which led to the investigation of learning with output-driven maps (Tesar 2014). Prior work on learning with output-driven maps has focused on systems in which the only disparities between inputs and outputs were segmental identity disparities (differences in the value of a feature). Inclusion of segmental insertion and deletion disparities exacerbates computational concerns, as it increases the number of possible correspondence relations between an input and an output, and makes the space of possible inputs for a word infinite due to the possible presence of an unbounded number of deleted segments. We propose an extension of that earlier work to handle phonologies that permit insertion and deletion, and evaluate the proposal by applying it to cases in Basic CV Syllable Theory (Jakobson 1962; Clements & Keyser 1983; Prince & Smolensky 2004). First, we propose that a learner represent information about the possible presence/absence of a segment in an underlying form via a presence feature. The presence feature can be set using the same inconsistency detection method that has previously been used to set other segmental features. This allows the learner to combine evidence from paradigmatically related words in a single compact representation. Second, we propose that the learner only consider for underlying forms segments that surface in at least one surface realization of the morpheme. This approach is justified by the structure of output-driven maps, and avoids the potential for an unbounded number of possibly deleted segments in an underlying form. A proof is given for the validity of the method for avoiding unbounded deletion. The resulting learner is able to learn some grammatical regularities about segmental insertion and deletion; this is shown via two manual step-by-step applications of the algorithm. Verificatory simulations for learning the entire typology of Basic CV Syllable Theory are left to work in the near future.Peer reviewe
