Adam Smith’s contribution to secularisation
This article examined several crucial themes in Adam Smith’s philosophy with the purpose of highlighting and assessing his contribution to the secularisation of Western society. The article, written from the perspective of reformational philosophy, begins with a brief biography and sketch of Adam Smith’s influence on modern society, followed by a summary of Ponti Venter’s view on Smith. This sets the scene for a discussion of Adam Smith’s project, his method of tackling it, and his views on systems, philosophy of history and the concept of philosophy

Dupuy’s view on economism
French economist and philosopher Jean-Pierre Dupuy has drawn attention to the dominance of society by not only the powers of finance and commerce, but also by economic rationalism, a methodology of maximising profit, rent, utility, happiness, given suitable sets of incentives. Financial markets are largely irrational as they move from major booms into busts and instil a speculative mentality throughout society. Society itself is compared to a supermarket in which we choose from amongst a wide range of closely related alternatives, without having any clue of adverse consequences. This is a form of fatalism. Similarly, threats of major catastrophes are downplayed, including a nuclear conflagration, climate warming and moral collapses, especially individualism stimulated by desire as a key motivator of indefinite economic growth. The author’s proposal of enlightened catastrophism is discussed and an alternative is proposed in the form of enlightened subversion inspired by moves that would strengthen the ability of families and those responsible for managing businesses, education and health to exercise their own vocations in mutual service
Petrus Hispanus O.P. Auctor Summularum (III) ¿”Petrus Alfonsi” o “Petrus Ferrandi”?
This article aims to be a complement and continuation of my earlier work on the figure of Petrus Hispanus O. P., Auctor Summularum. First I bring to light some new documents in connection with the issues already examined in my 1997 and 2001 articles. Next, I deal with the questions postponed in my 2001 article: the problems concerning the figure of “Petrus Ferrandi” and his possible connection with the “auctor Summularum”, as well as Tugwell’s arguments against the hypothesis of the possible identity of the two figures, now examined from the perspective of the author of the Legenda prima. After analysing evidences from very diverse origin, I affirm, on the one hand, that the hypothesis of the identity of “Petrus Ferrandi” and “Petrus Hispanus” might be correct and, on the other hand, that there are no conclusive arguments that force us to affirm with certainty that the author of the Legenda prima is Pedro Ferrando. Although the analyses do not allow yet to determine whether the “auctor Summularum” is “Petrus Alfonsi” or “Petrus Ferrandi”, the evidence gathered and the connections set up will no doubt contribute to guide future research around the figure of “Petrus Hispanus”.Este artículo pretende ser complemento y continuación de mis anteriores trabajos sobre la figura de Petrus Hispanus O. P., Auctor Summularum.
The Sequence of Themata in the Collations of Frater Petrus
The topic of this thesis is an unpublished medieval scholastic manuscript containing a work
of one ‘Frater Petrus.’ It appears that Petrus wrote 150 collationes, or brief lessons to be read
throughout the year, almost all of which are reproduced in this single manuscript. Each
collation in general consists of a thema (a verse-length scriptural quotation) from the day’s
Mass reading, followed by a threefold explanation of each of three parts into which it is
divided, making connections with other parts of scripture for the reader to elaborate. The
first three collations and the very last collation all have themata that are not from the Mass
reading. The purpose of the thesis is to explain the sequence of the themata. Thus it consists
in clarifying the correct sequence of the collations and their themata, establishing the
relationship between the body of the work and the medieval (pre-Tridentine) lectionaries
from which the author would have been working, and in explaining the roles that these four
eccentric collations play in the work

Petrus Hispanus Portugalensis? : elementos para uma diferenciação de autores
The personality of Petrus Hispanus Portugalensis (13th century) is quite polifacetic: philosopher, physician, scientist, politician and pope. This gave reason for confounding Petrus Hispanus with other people. The author of this article studies some aspects related with the life, writings and personality of Petrus Hispanus in order to distinguish him from the people he has been confounded with. The author concludes that there are three differents persons: I) Petrus Hispanus, 0. P.; 2) Petrus Hispanus Portugalensis; 3) Petrus Hispanus, physician, whom some historians confounded with Petrus Julianus, who became a pope with the name of John' XXI

How should agriculture produce enough food for the world?
From an agricultural point of view, the question if the earth can feed adequately not only its current population of 7 billion people, but also the expected population of 9 billion people to 10 billion people by 2050, is currently answered in two opposing ways. Some believe modern agriculture should increase productivity by implementing technological innovation and eliminating subsistence agriculture. Others believe industrialised agriculture is out of tune with the ecology and sufficient healthy food may be produced by an agriculture that recognises ecological and biological limits (known as ecological intensification). On the basis of a theoretical framework derived from reformational philosophy and in particular the concept of enkapsis, this article supports ecological intensification, especially if it forms part of a cultural development guided by Schuurmans metaphor of a garden-city. However, it is still a marginal activity within a culture directed by a belief in progress. High rates of economic growth, based on technological innovation, appears to validate such faith, but human and environmental costs are insufficiently acknowledged (metaphor: the earth is a machine). A break with technicism and economism becomes a pre-condition for feeding adequately both the present and the projected population of the world.http://dx.doi.org/10.4102/koers.v77i2.431http://www.koersjournal.org.za/index.php/koers/article/viewFile/431/57
