Fermionic T-duality and U-duality in type II supergravity
PhDThis thesis deals with the two duality symmetries of N = 2 D = 10 supergravity
theories that are descendant from the full superstring theory: fermionic
T-duality and U-duality.
The fermionic T-duality transformation is applied to the D-brane and ppwave
solutions of type IIB supergravity. New supersymmetric solutions of complexi
ed supergravity are generated. We show that the pp-wave yields a purely
imaginary background after two dualities, undergoes a geometric transformation
after four dualities, and is self-dual after eight dualities.
Next we apply six bosonic and six fermionic T-dualities to the AdS4 CP3
background of type IIA supergravity, which is relevant to the current research
in the amplitude physics. This helps to elucidate the potential obstacles in
establishing the self-duality, and quite independently from that shows us that
fermionic T-dualities may be degenerate under some circumstances.
Finally, we make a step towards constructing a manifestly U-duality covariant
action for D = 10 supergravities by deriving the generalized metric for a
D1-brane. This is a single structure that treats brane wrapping coordinates on
the same footing as spacetime coordinates. It turns out that the generalized
metric of a D-string results from that of the fundamental string if one replaces
the spacetime metric with the open string metric. We also nd an antisymmetric
contribution to the generalized metric that can be interpreted as a noncommutativity
parameter
The student experience of online mathematics enrichment
Following concerns about the falling number of mathematics majors at University level, consideration has being given in a number of countries to enhancing provision for those school pupils who show the potential to study mathematics at University. Prevalent amongst this provision are enrichment opportunities and material designed to provide a wider picture of mathematics. This paper reports findings from a study of internet-based enrichment material in mathematics and focuses on the student experience of such online provision. Data from questionnaires and interviews suggest that this enrichment material helped the pupils who used it to gain a wider appreciation of mathematics and raised the profile of mathematics as a subject that could be interesting enough to pursue beyond school. Issues of equity in access to the material remain

Performance Improvements through Implementation of Lean Practices: A Study of the U.K. Red Meat Industry
'Lean' is an established industrial paradigm with proven track record in various sectors of the industry (Womack & Jones, 1996). World-class Companies such as Toyota (second biggest global car manufacturer), Porsche (most profitable global OEM), Boeing (largest global aerospace business) and Tesco (third largest global retailer) have adopted Lean at the corporate level. This paper reports on the introduction of 'Lean Thinking' to a new sector - the 'Red Meat Industry' (Food Chain Centre, 2004). This contribution highlights the benefits of lean production techniques in different stages of the red meat value chain and reports 2- 3% potential cost savings at each stage of the chain.Lean process, red meat industry, Takt-time, work standardization, Livestock Production/Industries,
"Methodology and Microeconomics in the Early Work of Hyman P. Minsky"
This paper reviews the recently published Ph.D. thesis of Hyman P. Minsky, summarizing its main contributions to methodology and microeconomics. These were aspects of economics with which Minsky is not usually associated, but which lie at the foundation of his later work. They include critical remarks on Cambridge economics. The paper then draws out some antecedents of Minsky's ideas in the work of Henry Simons, and highlights the Marshallian monetary analysis that he adopted.
