‘Alma diva leggiadra Simonetta’: culture and politics in literary representations of Simonetta Cattaneo Vespucci
This thesis examines literary representations of the noblewoman Simonetta Cattaneo Vespucci (c. 1453- 1476) written in the Florentine vernacular in the mid- 1470s and 1480s. Composed during the reign of Lorenzo de’ Medici, de facto ruler of Florence from 1469- 1492, these portrayals of Simonetta, in Angelo Poliziano’s Stanze, Lorenzo’s Comento de’ miei sonetti, and works by Bernardo Pulci, Luigi Pulci, Girolamo Benivieni and an anonymous poet, respond to the city’s interest in both its vernacular and classical roots, and its changing political landscape. In my thesis I argue that Simonetta is the means through which a new ideal of femininity is created that reflects these developments and becomes symbolic of them, combining the beauty and virtue of the female figures of Stilnovistic and Petrarchan poetry with attributes inspired by ancient literature, philosophy and mythology. Due to her ‘relationship’ with Giuliano de’ Medici, she is also a useful tool for praising the family in verse and winning their favour, in a city controlled by Lorenzo’s patronage networks. Moreover, she allows Lorenzo to portray himself as a just and wise ruler. In addition, her links with Naples mean that she becomes part of Florence’s policy of cultural diplomacy towards the city

Towards an Automatic Method for Toxicity and Pharmacological Testing in C. elegans
In toxicity and pharmacological studies C. elegans are exposed to different compounds and the effects analyzed by observing worm viability or behavior. An alternative approach is to use locomotor activity as a readout, which has been instrumental for assessing compound toxicity (Dhawan et al., 2000). Data acquisition usually requires microscope observation and manual counting, which is time consuming and inconvenient for extensive compound screenings. We have previously developed an automated method to detect C. elegans movement in which swimming worms are detected as they cross through infrared microbeams (Simonetta et al., 2007). We are currently adapting this methodology for high throughput analyses. We have developed a 384 channel apparatus and successfully recorded the behavioral changes produced by toxic compounds (Figure 1). The effect increases with compound concentration and is dependent on exposure time. Our "Worm Microtracker" might be useful for the community to develop easier and faster toxicity and paralysis assays, opening the possibility of performing high throughput studies in C. elegans.Fil: Simonetta, Sergio Hernan. S.Menchelli, S. Genovesi, R. Marcheschi, Luni tardoantica.
The excavations carried out by the University of Pisa in the quarter of Porta Marina at Luni (2014-2019) brought to light significant evidence of the changing townscapes between the 4th and the 7th c. AD. The archaeological research focused on an insula overlooking the cardo maximus, occupied by two domus built in the 1st c. BC, the Southern one being replaced by a temple in the second half of the 1st cent AD.During the 5th century, a workshop, hypothetically connected with textile making, was constructed on the Northern domus, while, in the late 5th-6th century, a well – in line with a trend already documented in Luni – was built in the Southern domus area. In the
Northern part of the trench we identified a 6th-7th century house with a fireplace, an open courtyard and a timber structure, probably used as a warehouse
