    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Ectopic expression of a aldehyde dehydrogenase of soybean in Nicotiana tabacum and Arabidopsis thaliana confer tolerance on abiotics stress

    Antiquitina é uma família de proteínas altamente conservada na evolução que pertence à superfamília de aldeído desidrogenase (ALDH), mas cuja função biológica é desconhecida. Baseado em homologia estrutural e analogia do padrão de expressão, foi isolado um gene da soja, homólogo a antiquitina de humanos, designado GmTP-55, que codifica uma proteína de 55,562 kDa, apresentando um domínio conservado de desidrogenases. A proteína TP-55 apresenta 82% de identidade de seqüência com a proteína 26g de ervilha, induzida por déficit hídrico, e 60% de homologia com a proteína antiquitina de humanos, pertencentes a família ADLH7A1 (conhecida como antiquitina) da superfamília de ALDH. O acúmulo da proteína TP-55 em plantas de soja foi observado na raiz e predominantemente no caule, sob condições de déficit hídrico e estresse salino. Com a finalidade de examinar a função do homólogo da antiquitina in vivo, plantas transgênicas de tabaco (Nicotiana tabacum) e Arabidopsis thaliana expressando constitutivamente o cDNA GmTP-55 foram obtidas e submetidas a diversas condições de estresses abióticos. Enquanto que, em arabidopsis, a expressão do transgene foi confirmada por RT-PCR, em Arabidopsis, a expressão da proteína quimérica TP-55-GFP foi avaliada por microscopia de fluorescência, demonstrando seu acúmulo predominantemente no núcleo e no citoplasma. A expressão ectópica do gene viiGmTP-55 tanto em arabidopsis quanto em tabaco conferiu as plantas transgênicas tolerância a estresse salino durante a germinação e a déficit hídrico durante o desenvolvimento. A eficiência de germinação das sementes transgênicas em concentrações crescentes de NaCl foi muito superior do que a dos controles não transformados. Assim também, em condições de seca progressiva, as plantas transgênicas de tabaco mantiveram a turgidez foliar em altos níveis, contrastando com o aparecimento de murcha foliar das plantas controle. As plantas transgênicas também exibiram uma maior tolerância a estresses oxidativos, que foram induzidos por meio de tratamento com H 2 O 2 e paraquat. Tanto as sementes de arabidopsis quanto as de tabaco expressando GmTP-55 germinaram eficientemente em meio contendo 15 μM de H 2 O 2 , enquanto a germinação das sementes controle foi drasticamente reduzida nas mesmas condições. Similarmente, os discos foliares de tabacos transgênicos tratados com paraquat apresentaram uma redução significativa de lesões necróticas quanto comparadas com as plantas controle. Considerando que o denominador comum resultante dos estresses salino, hídrico e oxidativo seria a produção de ROS e aldeídos tóxicos derivados, estes resultados sugerem que o gene TP-55, homólogo da antiquitina, esteja envolvido em respostas celulares adaptativas relacionadas com detoxificação de aldeídos.Antiquitin is an evolutionarily conserved protein family of unknown function that belongs to the aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) superfamily. Based on structural homology and expression pattern analogy, we have isolated an antiquitin homolog gene from soybean, designated GmTP-55 that encodes a dehydrogenase motif- containing 55.562 kDa protein. The predicted encoded protein, TP-55, shares 82% sequence identity with the water-stress induced 26g protein from peas and 60% homology with human antiquitin that belongs to the ADLH7A1 (known as antiquitin) family of the ALDH superfamily. Accumulation of TP-55 in soybean was detected in roots and mostly in stems under water deficit and salt stress. To examine the role of antiquitin in vivo, we have obtained transgenics tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and Arabidopsis thaliana plants constitutively expressing GmTP-55 and analyzed their response to a variety of abiotic stress conditions. While in tobacco the transgene expression was confirmed by RT-PCR, in Arabidopsis, the expression of the TP-55-GFP chimerical protein was evaluated by fluorescence microscopy that demonstrated its major accumulation in the nucleus and cytoplasm. Ectopic expression of GmTP-55 in both Arabidopsis and tobacco conferred tolerance to salinity during germination and to water stress during plant growth. Under increasing salt concentration the germination efficiency of transgenic seeds were much greater than that of untransformed seeds. ixLikewise, under progressive drought, the transgenic tobacco kept the shoot turgidity to a normal level, which was in contrast to the leaf wilt phenotype of control plants. The transgenic plants also exhibited an enhanced tolerance to oxidative stresses that were induced by H 2 O 2 and paraquat treatments. Both Arabidopsis and tobacco seeds expressing GmTP-55 germinated efficiently in medium supplemented with H 2 O 2 15 μM, whereas the germination of control seeds was drastically reduced under the same condition. Likewise, transgenic tobacco leaf discs treated with paraquat presented a significant reduction in the necrotic lesions as compared to the control leaves. Since the common denominator resulting from salinity, dehydration and oxidative stress is the production of ROS and derived toxic aldehydes, our results suggested that the antiquitin homolog gene might be involved in adaptive responses related to aldehyde detoxification.Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológic

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
