No full textC’è un legame tra vita e pensiero? È opportuno interrogarsi sull’identità di chi scrive, sul suo carattere, indagare gli accadimenti più importanti della sua esistenza al fine di comprenderne l’opera? O è meglio mettere l’autore fra parentesi e concentrarsi sul messaggio che il testo veicola, occupandoci solo della sua veridicità? Questo problema è ormai da diversi anni entrato in modo prepotente nel dibattito letterario e filosofico, un dibattito a cui Simone Weil ha partecipato a modo suo. La soluzione proposta dalla filosofa francese è complessa in quanto presuppone la relazione dialettica tra la dimensione personale e quella impersonale presenti entrambe nell’autore.
Weil suggerisce che, se da un lato l’opera va oltre la singola individualità dell’autore, dall'altro non si può negare l’esistenza di un legame tra vita e pensiero. Pur riconoscendo che la biografia non può
spiegare completamente l’opera, ritiene che tra le due permanga pur sempre un rapporto. Secondo la filosofa francese, le opere di prim’ordine sono quelle in cui l’autore, mediante una rigorosa ascesi dell'attenzione e dello sguardo, riesce a superare il suo punto di vista parziale e ad accedere a una visione obiettiva. Pertanto, pur mantenendo l’opera al centro dell'attenzione, non si può trascurare il contesto personale dell’autore nel processo di comprensione e interpretazione.Is there a connection between life and thought? Is it appropriate to inquire into the identity of the author, their character, and investigate the most significant events of their existence to understand their work? Or is it better to put aside the author and focus solely on the message conveyed by the text, concerning itself only with its truthfulness? This issue has forcefully entered the literary and philosophical debate in recent years, a debate in which Simone Weil participated in her own way. The solution proposed by the French philosopher is complex, as it presupposes the dialectical relationship between the personal and impersonal dimensions present in the author.
Weil suggests that, on the one hand, the work transcends the individuality of the author, but on the other hand, the existence of a connection between life and thought cannot be denied. While acknowledging that a biography cannot fully explain the work, she believes that a relationship between the two always persists. According to the French philosopher, outstanding works are those in which the author, through a rigorous asceticism of attention and perception, manages to transcend their partial point of view and access an objective vision. Therefore, while keeping the work at the center of attention, one cannot overlook the personal context of the author in the process of understanding and interpretation
Fragility curves for low-damage rocking dissipative connections of precast concrete buildings
No full textDifferent low-damage technologies have recently been developed to meet society's growing expectations for earthquake-proof buildings. Among others, the PRESSS (PREcast Seismic Structural System) technology has proved its capability to withstand earthquakes with minimal damage, effectively mitigating socio-economic losses. However, applying loss assessment methodologies can pose challenges due to the lack of data regarding fragility functions for low-damage structural components. This paper aims to propose a method for computing numerical fragility curves for rocking dissipative structural components. souls of their readers yet are each subject to constraints imposed by form. Weil's concept of locating equilibrium between incommensurates is discussed, and her
distinctively philosophical approach to fictions and fictionality is used to investigate O'Connor's notion of prophetic fictions and the writer's role. Chapter Two assesses how both writers revivify Christian paradoxes. Weil's monstrous concept of affiiction, and O'Connor's use of the grotesque genre to jolt secular man into an
awareness of the sacred are scrutinised. Chapter Three studies how both writers consider an encounter between God and man is possible through the action of grace. My Conclusion interrogates how Weil's work can deepen our understanding of O'Connor's writings, and examines how successful O'Connor is at realising a truly

Status and participation in online task groups: An agent-based model
No full textThis chapter presents a dynamic model that explains status hierarchies in online task-oriented groups, whose members may be differentiated by an external status characteristic. The model reveals the participation of actors in online group discussions, how this participation is affected by external status characteristics, and how it leads to the formation of internal status relations. The model relies on and extends the approach by Skvoretz and Fararo known as E-state structuralism (ESS) in the formation of status hierarchies in task-oriented groups. The model is an attempt to modify the ESS model by broadening its interaction range and extending it beyond pairwise interactions. The author implements his micro-founded generative hypotheses as an agent-based model and has then tested the outcome of the model with a case study to empirically validate the simulations. Finally, the chapter evaluates behavior of the model in its parameter space and compares it to the observed outcomes

A stress-based gradient-enhanced damage model
No full textOne of the shortcomings of nonlocal damage models with a constant length scale parameter is the wrong prediction of damage initiation and propagation in correspondence of a strongly inhomogeneous strain field. This unphysical behavior can be corrected by considering an evolving length scale which is made a function of the stress state. Giry, Dufour and Mazars (2011) have recently proposed an approach, based on an integral nonlocal damage model, which solves the problem of incorrect initiation and propagation of damage as discussed by Simone et al. (2004). In this contribution, a similar approach is presented in a differential damage model, the gradient-enhanced damage model. The underlying idea, which is used to modify the governing equations, is explained. A new formulation of the finite element equations is derived, with attention to C0-continuity requirements. Representative examples will illustrate the performance of the proposed approach. Shortcomings of the model are pointed out and graphically explained using slight variations of the before-mentioned examples.Building EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience

The analysis is introduced into the context of Soviet and later post-Soviet monument building and stresses the continuity and discontinuities in the public efforts of the Ukrainian governments to draw the attention of both national and international public opinion to a particular version of history, supporting the specific political power in Ukraine. The author stresses the importance of certain modules of communication in these monumental memorials that are taken from other memorials all around the world.
