A Research Drawn on Housing and the City.: A Conversation with Orsina Simona Pierini
The research and teaching activity of Orsina Simona Pierini, Professor of Architectural and Urban Composition at the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies of the Polytechnic University of Milan, focus on the historical interpretation of the city’s architecture from the perspective of design. Her knowledge of the role of the dwelling in urban planning stems from the systematic study of the different expressions of habitation in contemporary European cities, as well as from specific research focused on modern Spanish architecture and Milanese residential constructions, with particular attention to the relationship between the dwelling and the city. Her interpretation of these phenomena is, therefore, transversal as it involves various different scales and addresses the critical-historical sphere; it’s also a means to define design methods that respond to the needs and demands of current habitation. This conversation with Orsina Simona Pierini is organised, therefore, around certain topics that summarise her experience as a scholar and her personal opinion of the expressions of contemporary collective architecture that define the configuration of the contemporary city and, in general, the current way of inhabiting.

Everyday Wonders Meraviglie Quotidiane Luigi Caccia Dominioni and Milano: the corso Italia complex

Among the works of Luigi Caccia Dominioni, the building complex in Corso

of the Milanese architect Luigi Caccia Dominioni (1913-2016).
His multi-functional building complex in Corso Italia (1957-64), built
in a quarter heavily damaged by WWII bombs, unfolds a complex
spatial narration from the scale of the city to the one of material
and detail. The volume looks at its multi-faceted reality through original
documents from the LCD Archive, a new set of photographs by Cino
Zucchi, and custom-produced three-dimensional reconstructions.
The essays by Cino Zucchi and Orsina Simona Pierini read this ‘silent
masterpiece’ on the backdrop of Caccia Dominioni’s relationship
with its city and of its peculiar design approach, pointing out
its relevance in contemporary architectural thought

CAMPUS & CONTROCAMPUS 3. Architetture per studiare e ricercare: UNIVERSITAS / UNIVERSITIES. Architecture Schools in the World
Over the last two centuries, the buildings designed to house Schools of Architecture have often been driven by a speci c ambition, beyond the customary aim of providing facilities adequate for their functions: the desire to teach a lesson of architecture through their own image and spatial organization. From the historic Bauakademie of Schinkel in Berlin to the recent Abedian School of Architecture by CRAB in Gold Coast, Australia, by way of the S. R. Crown Hall by Mies van der Rohe in Chicago and the FAUP by Álvaro Siza in Porto, to name just a few, what clearly emerges is the intention to instruct through the construction of a school. A teaching that nds precise correspondences and concrete materializations in the spaces of higher education linked to the architectural disciplines: design ateliers, model making workshops, exhibition spaces. The correspondence between buildings and educational programs, a source of pride for Mies van der Rohe in the case of the IIT campus, may not make the architecture of schools actually “speak,” as Ledoux intended, but it certainly makes it eloquent
Campus & Countercampus
The theme of the university campus is central to the debate on the future of Milan. It represents a challenge for the new order of the city in this metropolitan dimension, an opportunity for architectural and urban regeneration that can give rise to new, updated, important systems of common spaces
