The relationships between the margraves of Brandenburg and the Knights Templar (12th–14th c.)
The paper focuses on the relationships between the margraves of Brandenburg from the House of Ascania and the Knights Templar. The author presents four essential stages of these relationships: occasional contacts, the conflict over the Transodrian estates, rapprochement and collaboration
Man in a briefcase: the social construction of the laptop computer and the emergence of a type form
Dominant design discourse of the late 1970s and early 1980s presented the introduction of the laptop computer as the result of ‘inevitable’ progress in a variety of disparate technologies, pulled together to create an unprecedented, revolutionary technological product. While the laptop was a revolutionary product, such a narrative works to dismiss a series of products which predated the laptop but which had much the same aim, and to deny a social drive for such products, which had been in evidence for a number of years before the technology to achieve them was available. This article shows that the social drive for the development of portable computing came in part from the ‘macho mystique’ of concealed technology that was a substantial motif in popular culture at that time.
Using corporate promotional material from the National Archive for the History of Computing at the University of Manchester, and interviews with some of the designers and engineers involved in the creation of early portable computers, this work explores the development of the first real laptop computer, the ‘GRiD Compass’, in the context of its contemporaries. The consequent trajectory of laptop computer design is then traced to show how it has become a product which has a mixture of associated meanings to a wide range of consumers. In this way, the work explores the role of consumption in the development of digital technology
Inglaterra. Internal legislation in the Order of Knights Templar and its attitude towards criminal offences and violations of monastic discipline
Internal Legislation In The Order Of Knights Templar And Its Attitude Towards Criminal Offences Abd Violations Of Monastic DisciplineThe paper sheds light on a rather narrow aspect of the history of Knights Templar, analyzing it from the point of view of its internal disciplinary legislation. As an order grouping knights, in its statute, the Order made numerous references to discipline and the penal system. In the paper, the author characterized the various preserved copies of the Order’s Statute, out of which as many as 15 have survived until the present times; subsequently, he referred to the so called hierarchical statutes of the Order; among others, the latter defined in detail the disciplinary responsibility of Order members. On the basis of the above sources, the author divided the disciplinary measures into groups, beginning with the most restrictive ones and ending with the penitential and expiatory ones. He showed the types of offences which, when committed, threatened the wrongdoer with a loss of a home or tunic, as well as minor offences for which one could adjudicate penance or else abandon the idea of punishing the culprit altogether. The author described the procedure which initiated disciplinary proceedings as well as the penitential practices of the penitent. He also provided pertinent examples of violations of the Statute by the Templar Brothers, relying on source materials

The ethos of a knight-monk in the context of the theology of war on the basis of The Rule of the Knights Templar and The Praise of the New Knighthood by Bernard of Clairvaux
The author analyses and interprets the ethos of a knight-monk in the context
of theology of war included in the Rule of the Knights Templar and the writings
by Bernard of Clairvaux. He refers to theological, cultural and moral aspects of
the life in the Middle Ages. His presentation of the features of a monk and a
Christian soldier shows similarities between the two lifestyles.
The Order of the Knights Templar was based on fight and obedience. These
two elements can also be found in the life of a religious. Feudal and ecclesiastical
hierarchy were based on obedience, fighting was also part of a monk’s life.
A religious was obliged to fight, however, not against ‘flesh and blood’. He was
to combat his carnal desires and be constantly alert.
The Rule of the Knights Templar combined the elements of a contemplative
and active lives, which made it a crucial document in the history of the Church.
It attempted at creating a coherent ethos of a warrior-monk. Its authors aimed
at giving the Knights Templar the tools to combine the earthly, ‘material’ and
spiritual life, putting the emphasis on temperance. It was not possible for
them to lead the life modelled upon the life of the secular knights and enjoy
its pleasures and exaggerate mortifications and the zeal in prayer.Uniwersytet Warszawski12/219721
Inter-organisational costing approaches: the inhibiting factors
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to highlight the limitations of current
accounting practices in an inter-organisational context; introduce contemporary
costing approaches used in inter-organisational costing (IOC) programmes; and
identify the inhibitors of successful implementation of IOC programmes. Design/
methodology/approach - The paper uses a structured review of empirical and
theoretical literature. Findings - Traditional accounting practices do not
adequately fulfil their role in the inter-organisational context. Contemporary
accounting practices overcome only some limitations of traditional accounting
practices. The paper uncovers part of the complexity surrounding the
implementation of IOC programmes and suggests that we are dealing with a broad
inter-disciplinary phenomenon. Research limitations/implications - Conclusions
are drawn on a conceptual level and further empirical investigation is
encouraged. Practical implications - The paper raises the awareness of the
complexity surrounding the implementation of IOC programmes. The broad set of
inhibiting factors could be effectively used by managers to assess the readiness
of organisations involved in implementation of IOC programmes. Originality/value
- This research is the first that systematically addresses the problem of
inhibitors in the implementation of IOC programmes. The broad scope of the paper
sets the foundations for more focused research into specific inhibiting factors

The relationships between supply chain and firm performance
PurposeSupply chains directly influence the differentiation and cost of a firm's products and services and its exposure to risk. The purpose of this paper is to use secondary financial data to explore the relationship between supply chain and firm performance by developing a unified proxy for supply chain performance.Design/methodology/approachEstablished econometric techniques were used to validate the proxy using a sample frame comprising the annual reports of 117 publicly traded UK manufacturing firms from the period 1995 to 2004.FindingsIncreases in change in the proxy lead to an increase in change in the rate of return on capital employed and a change in the rate of cash‐to‐cash cycle length, both of which are traditional measures of improved supply chain management. Moreover, as the rate of change of the proxy increases, so does enterprise value at a level that is statistically significant, indicating that improving supply chain management practices has a positive impact upon improved firm performance.Research limitations/implicationsAs annual financial results were used the analysis is at a high level so there is a lack of resolution in identifying discrete causes. The use of annual financial results also means that the research can only take yearly snapshots of firm performance.Practical implicationsThe paper indicates that the supply chain is an enabler, not an impediment, to superior organisational performance.Originality/valueThe originality and value of this paper is that it develops a proxy to explain the relationships between supply chain and an organisation's financial performance taking into account the three imperatives of profitability, liquidity, and productivity.</jats:sec
