Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Negotiating for meaning: Papers on foreign language teaching and testing
Papers from a conference on language teaching and testing are grouped in four sections. The first contains a foreword by Dale A. Koike and Antonio R. M. Simoes. The second, on research in second/foreign language teaching, includes the following: "Second Language Learning and Evaluation: From Theory to Classroom Practice" (Sandra J. Savignon); "What Should Portuguese Language Teaching Do About Grammar? Current Trends in the Teaching of Spanish" (Bill Vanpatten); "The Politics of Methodology: Recent Trends and the Teaching of 'Other' Languages" (Diane Musumeci); and "Recent Research on Second Language Learners: Beliefs and Anxiety" (Elaine K. Horwitz). Section three, on reading in a foreign language, presents: "Reading as a Classroom Activity: Theory and Techniques" (Richard Kern, Janet Swaffar, Dolly Young); and "Teaching and Testing an Expository Text" (James F. Lee). The fourth section focuses on Portuguese language teaching for Spanish speakers, with: "Nasal Vowels, the Case of Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish: Description and Classroom Application" (Antonio R. M. Simoes); and "Evaluating Portuguese Performance of Spanish-Speaking Students" (John B. Jenson). A brief text in Portuguese is appended. (MSE
Performance of modular hybrid cold-formed/tubular structural system
In recent years, modular construction has been used in low-to medium rise multi-story and even high-rise buildings. Pre-fabrication by off-site manufacture leads to faster and safer construction, improved quality, reduced resources and waste. The research activity summarized in this paper is carried out within the European project INNO3DJOINTS and it aims at developing innovative plug-and-play joints which enable modularity, faster construction and deconstruction. The developed modular construction system is hybrid, whereby tubular columns are combined with cold-formed lightweight steel profiles using plug-and-play connections to provide an efficient structural system. The influence of the type of floor system, the horizontal and vertical load-bearing systems and the type of truss on the structural performance are investigated. The results obtained from numerical analyses allowed optimizing the geometry of the examined hybrid modular system. To highlight its effectiveness and versatility, a case study building was used to compare the proposed hybrid system with other conventional structural solutions
"Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.
European Thyroid Association Guidelines regarding Thyroid Nodule Molecular Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology Diagnostics
Molecular fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology diagnostics has the potential to address the inherent limitation of FNA cytology which is an indeterminate (atypia of undetermined significance/follicular lesion of undetermined significance follicular neoplasm) cytology. Because of the emerging role of molecular FNA cytology diagnostics, the European Thyroid Association convened a panel of international experts to review methodological aspects, indications, results, and limitations of molecular FNA cytology diagnostics. The panel reviewed the evidence for the diagnostic value of mutation panel assessment (including at least BRAF, NRAS, HRAS, KRAS, PAX8/PPARG, RET/PTC) of targeted next generation sequencing and of a microarray gene expression classifier (GEC) test in the diagnostic assessment of an indeterminate cytology thyroid nodule. Moreover, possible surgical consequences of molecular FNA diagnostic results of thyroid nodules and the evidence that analysis of a molecular FNA diagnostic panel of somatic mutations or a microarray GEC test can alter the follow-up were reviewed. Molecular tests may help clinicians to drive patient care and the surgical decision if the analysis is performed in specialized laboratories. These molecular tests require standardization of performance characteristics and appropriate calibration as well as analytic validation before clinical interpretation. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Letter from R. R. Zellick, Assistant Trust Officer, Anglo California National Bank of San Francisco, to Joseph R. Goodman, October 2, 1942
Letter from R. R. Zellick, Assistant Trust Officer at The Anglo California National Bank of San Francisco, to Joseph R. Goodman, regarding property owned by Dave Tatsuno. Zellick mentions a dispute between current tenants and Tatsuno, and that Tatsuno has asked Goodman to help locate trustworthy tenants.Personal correspondence, organizational records, government documents, publications, and other papers created or collected by Joseph R. Goodman documenting the forced removal and incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II, as well as organized resistance to incarceration. Included in the collection are records of the Japanese Young Men's Christian Association and the Japanese American Citizens' League in San Francisco, including papers of the Japanese YMCA's executive secretary Lincoln Kanai; Sakai family papers; Goodman's correspondence to and from Japanese American incarcerees, organizations opposing forced removal and incarceration of Japanese Americans, the War Relocation Authority, and others; publications, photographs, and ephemera from the Topaz Relocation Center, where Goodman taught high school; War Relocation Authority records and publications; and newspaper clippings, pamphlets, and reports about forced removal and incarceration created by various government, religious, and civic organizations, in California and nationwide

The breakdown of semantic memory appears early in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Lexico-semantic difficulties (e.g. difficulties in retrieving words and their meaning) are among the first symptoms of the disease. However, semantic knowledge is not always investigated in the neuropsychological assessment and is rather reflected through non-specific semantic measurements as through naming tasks. In order to screen this lexico-semantic decline, we propose the mini-SKQ, a Semantic Knowledge Questionnaire.
Mini-SKQ explores semantic impairments in AD patients with 12 questions selected from the SKQ, a previous and longer version of the test, proposed initially by Laiacona et al. (1993), and revised in a French version by Simoes Loureiro and Lefebvre (2015). We administer mini-SKQ to 77 participants, 39 AD and 38 healthy old people.
Results showed a significant difference between the groups : AD made significantly more errors than healthy old people. The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis established the optimal cut-off score of the mini-SKQ at 3 errors (sensitivity 61,4%, specificity 89,5%) in differentiating between AD patients and healthy old people.
The Mini-SKQ is a fast and easily administered questionnaire. Results indicated favorable indicators to screen semantic knowledge. These first observations underlines that mini-SKQ could potentially be attractive for screening semantic memory deterioration.
