Hoy, no tanto. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

THE MINI-SQK (SEMANTIC KNOWLEDGE DETERIORATION) : A NEW TOOL TO SCREEN SEMANTIC DETERIORATION IN ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE Simoes Loureiro, Isabelle (1) & Lefebvre, Laurent (1) (1) Cognitive psychology and neuropsychology department, Institute of health sciences and technologies, University of Mons Correspondence: Isabelle Simoes Loureiro, Cognitive psychology and neuropsychology department, University of Mons (UMONS), Place du Parc, 18, 7000, Mons. Email: [email protected] The breakdown of semantic memory appears early in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Lexico-semantic difficulties (e.g. difficulties in retrieving words and their meaning) are among the first symptoms of the disease. However, semantic knowledge is not always investigated in the neuropsychological assessment and is rather reflected through non-specific semantic measurements as through naming tasks. In order to screen this lexico-semantic decline, we propose the mini-SKQ, a Semantic Knowledge Questionnaire. Mini-SKQ explores semantic impairments in AD patients with 12 questions selected from the SKQ, a previous and longer version of the test, proposed initially by Laiacona et al. (1993), and revised in a French version by Simoes Loureiro and Lefebvre (2015). We administer mini-SKQ to 77 participants, 39 AD and 38 healthy old people. Results showed a significant difference between the groups : AD made significantly more errors than healthy old people. The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis established the optimal cut-off score of the mini-SKQ at 3 errors (sensitivity 61,4%, specificity 89,5%) in differentiating between AD patients and healthy old people. The Mini-SKQ is a fast and easily administered questionnaire. Results indicated favorable indicators to screen semantic knowledge. These first observations underlines that mini-SKQ could potentially be attractive for screening semantic memory deterioration. Laiacona M, Barbarotto R, Trivelli C, Capitani E. Articular cartilage with intra and extrafibrillar waters - Simulations of mechanical and chemical loadings by the finite element method

    No full text
In line with previous constitutive developments, a three-phase multi-species electro-chemo-mechanical model of articular cartilage that accounts for the effect of two water compartments is pursued. Here, a finite element formulation is presented in order to solve initial and boundary value problems and to simulate the time and space heterogenous fields generated by mechanical and chemical loadings in laboratory samples. The formulation capitalizes upon (1) the chemo-mechanical model in Loret and Simoes [B. Loret, F.M.F. Simoes, Articular cartilage with intra- and extra-fibrillar waters. A chemo-mechanical model, Mech. Mater. 36 (5-6) (2004) 515-541; B. Loret, F.M.F. Simoes, Mechanical effects of ionic replacements in articular cartilage. I. The constitutive model, Biomech. Model. Mechanobiol. 4 (2-3) (2005) 63-80; Mechanical effects of ionic replacements in articular cartilage. II. Simulations of successive substitutions of NaCl and CaCl2, Biomech. Model. Mechanobiol. 4 (2-3) (2005) 81-99] which was restricted to successive equilibria, and from which both time and space were excluded; and (2) the model in Loret and Simoes (B. Loret, F.M.F. Simoes, Articular cartilage with intra- and extra-fibrillar waters. Mass transfer and generalized diffusion, Eur. J. Mech.-A/Solids 26 (1995) 759-788], where the equations of mass transfer between the two fluid phases and the generalized diffusion equations in the extrafibrillar phase have been established. A thin cartilage layer, laterally confined, is loaded through time varying mechanical and chemical conditions applied on the lower and upper boundaries. Two types of chemical loadings are simulated. First the concentration of NaCl in the bath in contact with the cartilage is changed according to several time schemes, including in particular free swelling and cyclic changes. A more complex process consists in replacing NaCl by CaCl2. Chemical loading gives rise to heterogeneous fields during a transient period, whose extend depends on geometry and on a number of characteristic material properties, e.g. Darcy's seepage time, Fick's diffusion time, and typical times for intercompartmental mass transfer. Mechanical confined compression and swelling tests are simulated as well. Spatial profiles of the various chemical species and mechanical, chemical and electrical entities highlight the influences of the existence of two water compartments. At steady state, the strains, stresses, pressures and the distribution of water and ions in the two compartments obtained in Loret and Simoes [B. Loret, F.M.F. Author Under Sail The Imagination of Jack London, 1893-1902

    No full text
In Author Under Sail, Jay Williams offers the first complete literary biography of Jack London as a professional writer engaged in the labor of writing. It examines the authorial imagination in London's work, the use of imagination in both his fiction and nonfiction, and the ways he defined imagination in the creative process in his business dealings with his publishers, editors, and agents. In this first volume of a two-volume biography, Williams traverses the years 1893 to 1902, from London's "Story of a Typhoon" to The People of the Abyss. The Jack London who emerges in the pages of Author Under Sail is a writer whose partnership with publishers, most notably his productive alliance with George Brett of Macmillan, was one of the most formative in American literary history. London pioneered many author models during the heyday of realism and naturalism, blurring the boundaries of these popular genres by focusing on absorption and theatricality and the representation of the seen and unseen. London created an impassioned, sincere, and extremely personal realism unlike that of other American writers of the time. Author Under Sail is a literary tour de force that reveals the full range of London as writer, creative citizen, and entrepreneur at the same time it sheds light on the maverick side of machine-age literature.Intro -- Title Page -- Copyright Page -- Dedication -- Contents -- Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- 1. Sub Rosa Volume I: Bloom in Secret

Some people read scholarly articles, others prefer graphic novels, and most prefer a good novel. Every novel comes uniquely designed by an author, giving readers characters, drama, and a carefully crafted plot that draws them in. For my senior honors project, I decided to create a novel filled with mystery, love, and an assortment of carefully selected flowers.Choosing to incorporate flowers into the core concept of my novel stemmed from having grown up surrounded by them; my grandma has a really green thumb. I use the secret language of flowers throughout my novel to communicate hidden messages to those who look for them, as well as my protagonist Iris. To do this, I have researched different floral arrangements, learning the inner-workings of the murder mystery genre, and allowing myself to work through the creative process. Straying away from my business administration major, writing a fictional novel has allowed me to grow creatively

Author in Essay by I. A. Goncharov “Pepiniere”

Features of the embodiment of the author’s position in the essay by I. A. Goncharov “Pepiniere” are considered. The relevance of the study is due to the poorly studied poetics of this work. A review of the scientific literature on relevant topics is performed. Methodological and theoretical definitions are given. The scientific novelty of the article is in the fact that for the first time attention is paid to artistic techniques that allow to identify the author's position in the specified literary text. The author of the article grounds her opinion from the fact that, despite the dominance of the subjective point of view, other characters’ views stand out in the work. It is concluded in the study that the text of the work represents a biographical author and author-creator. It was established that the position of the author-creator is expressed through the title, epigraphs, which are quotes, as well as through different points of view, including the author-character, the author-narrator, the characters of the work. The author of the article dwells in detail on different ways of expressing the points of view of the author-character and the author-narrator. It is proved that the point of view of the author-character and the author-narrator can intersect, they are interchanged. The author's development of the term comic “point of view” is presented in the article
