Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Privacy and data protection in the domain name system: Threats and countermeasures
S.253-302The ongoing discourse on Internet privacy tends to focus on how to ensure that personal data at endpoints, i.e. either on user devices or on servers in domains under the control of service providers, are collected and processed according to user's privacy expectations and existing privacy regulations. However, one important yet often missing aspect from public debates on privacy is the impact of the underlying, for users often hidden, Internet infrastructure to the fundamental right to informational self-determination. A key critical infrastructure component of the Internet is the Domain Name System (DNS). As the so-called "address book of the Internet", DNS provides name resolution functions for Internet services, the most important of which is translating domain names into Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, and vice versa. Although an ever-growing number of Internet services are switching to encrypted communication hiding sensitive information from eavesdroppers, the unencrypted and unauthenticated DNS protocol remains a crucial privacy and cyber-security weak spot in the overall Internet infrastructure. The hierarchical and centralized design of the DNS allows various entities, including commercial and state entities to monitor online activities of Internet users and draw sensitive inferences about them, thus ultimately undermining individuals' right to privacy. At the same time, existing countermeasures are either theoretical, in an early stage of development or just not widely deployed or adopted. This paper focuses on privacy issues in DNS. We begin by providing a brief overview of how DNS works and a review of the different adversaries in the DNS infrastructure. Based on this analysis, we discuss resulting privacy threats to the end user and analyze related countermeasures from academia and standardization bodies
Valutazione della messa a punto dei regolatori-limitatori di velocità in simulazione numerica
LAUREA MAGISTRALEQuesto documento è un rapporto di uno studio relativo alla messa a punto dei regolatori/limitatori di velocità (RVLV ) in simulazione numerica presso la Casa automobilistica Renault; i RVLV che fanno parte dell’insieme sei sistemi di assistenza alla guida dei veicoli del Gruppo Renault.
La messa a punto dei RVLV, abitualmente realizzata al fisico, ovvero su piste, ha come obiettivo di calibrare al meglio del possible i parametri di controllo del RVLV per ottenere un funzionamento garantendo delle performance ottimali per il veicolo. Questo processo necessita molto tempo sulle piste. Dunque, poter effettuare la calibrazione di quei parametri in simulazione numerica permeterrebbe di ridurre il tempo trascorso su piste e tutti i costi ad esso legati. È quindi in questa ottica che, nell’ambito di questo tirocinio sono state realizzate le attività seguenti :
- Studio dei modelli delle leggi di controllo del RVLV implementati sotto Simulink per comprendere l’interazione dei vari parametri sulle performance del veicolo. - «Modellizzazione» di un veicolo di riferimento da mettere a punto attraverso gli stumenti numerici: le caratteristiche principali del veicolo (Potenza, coppie motrici massima e minima, rapporti di velocità per il cambio, etc..) sono quindi inserite nel modello del veicolo presente sotto Simulink. Il veicolo che è stato usato per la messa a punto numerica è un Master che fa parte della gamma dei veicoli comerciali Renault. - Test e correlazioni : I test abitualmente realizzati su piste sono stati riprodotti in simulazione numerica per paragonare, in un primo tempo, il comportamento del veicolo reale e quello del modello numerico. Questi test consistono in particolare nello specificare un riferimento di velocità al regolatore di velocità e poi misurare alcune grandezze caratteristiche del veicolo, come la coppia motrice ed il regime motore. Due tipi di test sono quindi stati realizzati: uno su strada piatta e l’altro su strada ripida (le trou du diable). Sono poi stati paragonati i risultati ottenuti al numerico con quelli fisici, l’obiettivo essendo di validare il modello numerico. - Messa a punto numerica: è stata effettuata una preimpostazione di alcuni parametri ; si tratta in particolare di un parametro che viene chiamato sforzo dinamico del veicolo, ossia lo sforzo ad esso necessario per essere stablizzato ad una certa velocità. Questo sforzo, abitualmente misurato su piste, può essere determinato prima di andare su piste, grazie ad un insieme di parametri forniti da un altro team di Renault, il team Perfo Conso. Una volta determinati, i valori di questo sforzo sono inseriti nel modello del RVLV caricato nel calcolatore del motore del veicolo, prima di andare su piste a fare la messa a punto fisica
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
