BACKGROUND: Protein S and tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) act together in
down-regulating coagulation.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the TFPI/protein S system in hereditary and acquired
protein S deficiency.
METHODS: Plasma antigen levels of protein S and full-length TFPI were determined
in heterozygous type I protein S-deficient individuals (n=35), patients on oral
anticoagulant treatment (OAT) (n=29), oral contraceptive (OC) users (n=10) and
matched controls. Thrombin generation was determined using calibrated automated
thrombography.
RESULTS: Full-length TFPI levels were lower in type I protein S-deficient
individuals (76.8+/-33.8%) than in age- and sex-matched controls (128.0+/-59.4%,
P<0.001). Among protein S-deficient individuals with thrombosis, those on OAT had
not only lower total protein S levels (25.7+/-8.2% vs. 54.7+/-8.2%, P<0.001), but
also lower full-length TFPI levels (52.6+/-15.0% vs. 75.4+/-22.9%, P=0.009) than
those not on OAT. Similarly, OC users had lower protein S (73.8+/-11.5% vs.
87.9+/-10.8%, P=0.005) and full-length TFPI levels (73.7+/-27.7% vs.
106.4+/-29.2%, P=0.007) than non-users. When triggered with tissue factor, plasma
from protein S-deficient individuals generated 3-5-fold more thrombin than
control plasma. The difference was only partially corrected by normalization of
the protein S level, full correction requiring additional normalization of the
TFPI level. Protein S-immunodepletion experiments indicated that free protein S
and full-length TFPI form a complex in plasma, and the protein S/TFPI interaction
was confirmed by surface plasmon resonance analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: Full-length TFPI binds to protein S in plasma and is reduced in
genetic and acquired protein S deficiency. The concomitant TFPI deficiency
substantially contributes to the hypercoagulable state associated with protein S
deficiency.

Numerical Assessment of Pneumatic Devices on the Wing/Fuselage Junction of a Tiltrotor
The present study aimed at investigating the effect of boundary layer control techniques, in particular suction and blowing, on the aerodynamic performance of the wing/fuselage junction of a tiltrotor. To this purpose, a series of numerical analyses at Re=14×〖10〗^6 were performed in order to obtain the best shape and location of the suction/blowing slot in terms of aerodynamic efficiency and maximum lift gain with respect to the baseline. A preliminary cost-benefit analysis was also carried out by comparing the increased on board installed power required by these systems with the estimated reduction in the propulsive power due to improved aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft
The Pooled Regression System and Incomplete Panel Data: An Overview,
by Marc Ivaldi, Michel Simioni.
This memo gives the usual methods for estimating a pooled regression system, first considering the example of incomplete panel data, laying particular emphasis on errors in specification: i.e. heteroscedasticity and the disregard of the conditions of orthogonality between exogenous variables and individual effects.Système de régressions empilées et panel incomplet : un tour d'horizon,

Assessment of Morphing Wings on the Rear Empennages of a Tiltrotor
Current trends in the design of transport aircraft have shown that in order to be economically viable and competitive
it is necessary to investigate technologies that can give an improvement in performance and a reduction in the fuel
consumption. The present study is aimed at investigating the effect of “Morphing Wings” on the aerodynamic
performance of the rear empennages of a new generation tiltrotor called ERICA (Enhanced Rotorcraft Innovative
Concept Achievement). Actually, morphing wings may offer significant potential benefits over conventional rigid
wings. In particular, the adaptive wing camber was selected as the most promising solution for the present work.
Specifically, the “finger concept” was chosen as the morphing technique due to its simplicity, reliability, and ability
to fulfill the strict safety rules. A series of computational fluid dynamic analyses at Re = 14x106 were performed in
order to obtain the best morphing shape of the “finger” elements in terms of aerodynamic efficiency and maximum.
A remarkable increment of lift coefficient slope and an overall aerodynamic efficiency enhancement was achieved
with respect to the baseline
Topographic correction of HiRISE and CaSSIS images: Validation and application to color observations of Martian albedo features
The topographic correction of satellite images has to be applied to both disentangle albedo features from illumination effects induced by local topography and performspectrophotometric analyses of planetary surfaces. This work focuses on the modeling and removal of surface brightness variations induced by topography, referred astopographic shading, from high resolution images of Mars. Topographic shading can be modeled through functions of the surface illumination and observation anglescalled disk functions. We consider four disk functions that are widely used in planetary photometry: the Lambert, Lommel-Seeliger, Akimov and Minnaert diskfunctions. We test and evaluate their performances in removing topographic shading from High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) and Colour andSurface Science Imaging System (CaSSIS) images. We here validate our method, moreover, we report scientific applications to single or multi-band datasets byanalyzing topographically corrected HiRISE colour observations of Martian recurring slope lineae and dust devil tracks, as well as CaSSIS panchromatic observations
