The modernist angel: Art at the Limits of the Human in D. H. Lawrence, H. D. and Mina Loy
PhDThe subject of this thesis is a figure that might provisionally be called the *modemist
angel'. Focusing on modernist literature, and more particularly on the work of D. H.
Lawrence, H. D. and Mina Loy, it aims to isolate from the many angels found in all periods
and all types of art a historically specific and intellectually coherent paradigm: an angel of
and for its modernist times. A figure of precisely this type could be said to exist in the
form of Walter Benjamin's 'angel of history'. Critics who address the question of the
modern angel in texts by Franz Kafka and Rainer Maria Rilke often do so in conjunction
with the problem posed by the angel of history. Beginning with a chapter on Benjamin,
this thesis nevertheless follows a different trajectory. Over five chapters, it explores a
modernist landscape formed not only by Lawrence, H. D. and Loy, but also by European
and American writers such as A. R. Orage, Allen Upward, Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens,
Havelock Ellis, Edward Carpenter, Sigmund Freud and Friedrich Nietzsche. Although the
angel that emerges from this investigation might, in some respects, be said to anticipate
Benjamin's later version, this figure is also very different, standing for a project that is
distinctively, and recognisably, modernist in nature. He/she (the sex of the modernist
angel is often open to question) represents an attempt to reconcile the divine
responsibilities of the artist with the material and gendered conditions of being,
specifically of being human, in the modem world. This thesis looks again at the clash of
intellectual paradigms in the early-twentieth century - notably, the confrontation of the
Romantic view of art as a superhuman or sacred undertaking with the psychoanalytical or
evolutionary idea that all human endeavour is underpinned by sub-human motives - and
suggests the angel as a new and instructive figure through which to think the perilous
limits between the human and the divine in modernist literature
Mina Loy’s Insel and its Contexts
The Salt Companion to Mina Loy comprises ten new essays by leading scholars and writers on the work of modernist poet Mina Loy. Loy (1882-1966) is increasingly seen as central to Anglo-American modernism, and she is often a set author on British and US undergraduate and MA courses. The Companion will be an invaluable new resource for students and readers of modernism
A Novel Approach to Composing the Research Bibliography Chapter in a PhD Thesis, Using Brownfield Keyword as an Example
An effective method for performing a literature review for a research project is to create a “literature map.” It can be a helpful tool for efficiently evaluating and understanding the work of other researchers, academics, and practitioners. An essential aspect of any literature study is drawing a diagram showing the relationships between various ideas, arguments, and concepts. It’s also cited as an effective method for bringing one’s internalized insight into the open. A literature map can be defined as a “graphical plan” of the topic that is being studied. This article examines a study that the author herself conducted on “Brownfield” keyword, explains how to write the bibliography section using Vosviewer and Histcite, and compares the comprehensive findings

Financial Development and Income in Developing Countries
This paper presents an empirical analysis of the controversial relationship between financial system development and economic development. Using cointegration and VAR estimations on annual data from Africa, we examine the nature of the relationship between financial development and income. We find mixed results on both the short and the long-run relationships between the two variables. We find finance causing income, income causing finance, and bi-directional causality. The results indicate that neither the short-run effects nor the long-run relationship seem to linearly depend on the level of financial development or the stage of development.

The demand and supply of external finance for innovative firms
Access to finance has figured prominently in the debate on barriers to firm growth, even though existing empirical research has not found conclusive evidence of a "finance gap." Moreover, it is not clear to what extent innovation aggravates financial constraints and what role innovation inputs, processes and outputs play in the market for external capital. In this article, we analyze how firm-level innovation affects (i) the likelihood of seeking external finance and (ii) the likelihood of obtaining it. We analyze an original data set of 3095 UK and US firms (small and medium size enterprises and middle-market) containing information on firms' innovation behaviors, performance, and finances for the period 2002-2004. Controlling for firm-specific characteristics, we provide novel and extensive evidence on the links between innovation, in its input, process and output dimensions, and the demand for external capital and its supply.©The Author 2013.
