The benefits of Functional Movement Screen in judo

    Get PDF
[EN] With the development of screening methods, simple screening tools could commonly be used to assess movement quality in real-world conditions. One of those methods is the functional movement screen (FMS), that was developed to helps determine the fundamental movement patterns of an individual. FMS test was administered to 9 elite judokas aged 22 ± 4.24 years, height 176.44 ± 7.44 and weight 79.44 ± 15.92 kg. The overall FMS score was 17.56 ± 1.59. No significant asymmetries were noted in the bilateral test. The lowest score was achieved in shoulder mobility 1.89 ± 0.6 which represent and issue that needs to be addressed to prevent the occurrence of injuries. Overall the FMS testing could be a beneficial tool to strength and conditioning coaches in judo, especially in the preseason to assess the functional movement status of judo athletes and to address any issues that could be identified. It represents a fast and affordable screening tool, but it needs to be administered by a qualified assessor. The data of this study could serve as a reference score to other FMS research in judo or other combat sports or martial arts

Objective. In judo, highly skilled judokas pose a higher bilateral quality of arm and leg movements. This study aimed to examine the quality of bilateral throw execution of the selected Ashi-Waza (leg throwing) techniques in the youth U-14 age group judokas. Methods. Execution of 3 judo throws from Ashi-waza (O soto gari, O uchi gari and Uchi mata) was evaluated by three raters on the dominant and non-dominant body side on a sample of 5 judokas (age 13.12 ± 0.46, height 165.82 ± 8.37 cm, weight 58.36 ± 8.25 kg, years of training 6.4 ± 0.55). Paired samples T-test was used to analyse symmetries in performance with statistical significance set at p ≤ 0.05. Results. There were no significant differences between the throw quality on the dominant and non-dominant sides in all leg throwing techniques. However, all scores are lower on the left side, which is also the non-dominant side. Furthermore, the best score among the group of leg throwing techniques was with the Osoto-gari throw, while the Uchi-mata throw attained the lowest score. Conclusion. Findings demonstrate that youth judokas competing in the U-14 age group perform the Ashi-Waza techniques symmetrically; however, the trend of lower quality on the non-dominant side is noted. The Uchi-mata is the throw with the worst quality in the U-14 age group. Therefore, additional attention should be given to bilateral throw execution in the U-14 age group as the literature suggest that the transition between U-14 and U-16 age groups is crucial and where the significant bilateral differences start to occur

Objective. Judo is supposed to represent a sports discipline that symmetrically develops both sides of the human body. This study aimed to review the literature on morphological (a)symmetries in judo. Methods. The literature search was conducted via PubMed, SPORTDiscus and ResearchGate databases and included all works published until December 2020 where papers written in English and where full text was available were included. Review papers, case studies, conference abstracts and books were excluded from the final selection. Results. Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria. Methods used to evaluate morphological symmetries were: Classical Anthropometry, 3D Body Scanning, Bioelectrical Impedance and Ultrasound Imaging. The most frequently identified asymmetry is the forearm girth, followed by the elbow, thigh, and calf girths. Conclusion. The study presents a review of scientific works on the topic of morphological (a)symmetries in judo. This indicates that judo-specific training causes specific morphological adaptations in judokas. However, how they are caused and their impact on performance is unclear. Therefore, further work should combine morphological and functional asymmetries to understand asymmetries' impact on judo performance better. In addition, a unified methodology for judokas should also be used, where researchers should report dominant and non-dominant body sides related to combat stances

Can special judo fitness test be used to detect asymmetries in movement patterns?

    No full text
Symmetry of movement actions expands sportsmens’ technical-tactical capacity and is considered as an element of greater versatility. The aim of this study was to perform the Special Judo Fitness Test (SJFT) with young judokas on their dominant and non-dominant side and to test whether SJFT could be used to asses’ differences in the movement patterns on the dominant and non-dominant body side. The SJFT was used to compare movement patterns on the dominant and non-dominant body side on a sample of 9 young judokas (age 13.78 ± 0.44, height 176 ± 3.8 cm, weight 74.2 ± 6.9 kg, years of training 7.78 ± 0.67). We used paired T-test and set statistical significance at p ≤ 0.05 to determine differences between movement symmetries and SJFT parameters. Main statistical differences were found between performance of SJFT by both body sides 1) in second throwing phase of SJFT t(8) = 3.50, p = 0.008, 2) in total number of combined throws in SJFT t(8) = 2.83, p = 0.022, and 3) in final SJFT INDEX t(8) = -2.57, p = 0.033. The study presented with the results that SJFT could be used as a tool to detect movement asymmetries in judokas when performed on both body sides and the importance of bilateral movement development of judokas. Also, the results of SJFT could be used to further create normative values of SJFT for youth male judokas, since this would contribute to already known normative values of male and female seniors and female youth categories

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Youth Judokas Competing in Higher Age Groups Leads to a Short-Term Success

Coaches of youth judo athletes might be under the influence of some extraordinary elite judo athletes that have won elite competitions at a relatively young age and might put youth athletes under pressure to gain as much fighting experience as fast as possible. The present study aims to present a 5-year competition structure, volume and age competition categories (ACC) range in which youth judokas competed with 10-year dropout status. Data from 46 judokas were collected (M = 24; F = 22) for four categorisation classes (National-NC; Perspective-PC; International-IC; World class-WC). Competitive structure, volume, performance and number of ACC were collected from 2009 to 2013 for all age groups from scores and standings records of the National Federation. Youth judokas competed in 8 (±2) competitions per year and also competed in 3 (±1) ACC. Abroad competitions affect the fighting experience and competitive success (CS). CS showed positive correlations with the number of ACC in the year 2009 (p = 0.01), 2010 (p = 0.01) and 2011 (p = 0.04). The final observed years’ CS 2012 (p = 0.009) and 2013 (p = 0.002) showed a negative association with the number of ACC. CS in the final observed year 2013 showed a positive association (p = 0.012) with the dropout status in 2018 and a negative one with the number of abroad competitions in 2013 (p = 0.029). In total, 52% dropout was noted in 10 years. This ‘’playing-up’’ approach was shown to be successful in creating youth medalists. However, just in the short term, if implemented for too long, it starts to affect competition success negatively and increases youth athletes’ dropout. Therefore, coaches should include more competitions abroad in competitors’ primary age group, while training sessions could be done with higher age groups which would allow for gathering additional experience in a more controlled environment in their yearly periodisation
