Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Adaptive Computing Models for Cybersecurity Threats and Information Analysis
Brief overview: The goal of this Community Project Funding (CPF) is to respond to critical cybersecurity community needs by making certain that NSU\u27s College of Computing and Engineering (CCE) remains at the forefront of ensuring that our students have the knowledge required to meet the increasing and unmet demand for a skilled workforce in this arena. The project objective is to increase NSU\u27s research and instructional capacity by purchasing and implementing the equipment and infrastructure needed for high-performance computing capabilities and NIST 800-171 compliance. Successful achievement of the project objective will lead to a project outcome that will allow NSU to increase and expand upon its current education- related grants and research activities, specifically opening the door to additional Department of Defense grants (which require NIST 800-171 compliance), infusing valuable resources into the local workforce and local economy. Once the initial phase of the high-performance computing hardware and software infrastructure is built out, then NSU will finalize our NIST 800-171 policies and procedures, train faculty and staff on applicable policies and procedures, and begin to use the high-performance computing hardware and software for research. Over a three-year period, formative evaluation methods will ensure that interim outputs/measures serve as indicators of progress. Responses to formative evaluation prompts/questions will document status and quality of implementation, key successes, and challenges/lessons learned; it will encourage utilization of quantitative and qualitative data to inform decision-making and continuous quality improvement, part of a fidelity evaluation to assess if the project is being conducted as planned, and to assess progress in meeting the project objective
Innovations in Computer Science Success for Hispanic and Other Underrepresented Graduate Students
NSU will develop specific, strategic enhancements to increase NSU’s capacity to address he needs of its increasingly diverse graduate student body and community as well as to meet the demand for advanced Computer Science professionals. The proposed project addresses both Competitive Preference Priorities. Project Goal To build a flexible, supportive, and effective academic pathway as students with Bachelor’s Degrees efficiently transition into (and through) Computer Science—related graduate degrees. Outcomes include increasing enrollment and graduation rates in Master’s and PhD degree programs in Computer Science, with a specific focus on increasing success among Hispanics and other underrepresented students. Project Objectives (Outcomes to be achieved by September 30, 2024) O1 – Expand postbaccalaureate educational opportunities for Hispanic and other students by increasing the number and/or percentage of Hispanic and other students pursuing targeted Computer Science-related graduate degrees full-time. (Target: 15% increase by 9/30/24; Grant resources: Outreach Coordinator, new outreach programming materials, scholarships) Component 1.1: Enhanced outreach services to diverse and low-income populations, including increasing scholarship availability. Component 1.2: Broader outreach services. O2 – Increase the number of targeted Computer Science-related graduate degrees awarded at NSU, especially among Hispanic, Black, and women student. (Target: 15% increase by 9/30/24; Grant resources: Stipends to develop and pilot test new and enhanced instructional methodologies, faculty professional development, mentoring stipends, scholarships) Component 2.1: Faculty professional development in diverse student learning. Developing a new program with UPR and PUPR that links CCE graduate faculty with UPR and PURP faculty to facilitate collaboration teaching and research, increasing faculty capacity at each institution.
