Daniel Simberloff: creative and devastating
I would like to start by expressing the immense satisfaction I felt at the presence of Daniel Simberloff at the Faculty of Biology of the University of Barcelona on the occasion of the award of the Premi Margalef d'Ecologia 2012 (2012 Margalef Ecology Award). It was a privilege to introduce him to all those present, especially to our students, who were there in the expectation of something truly special
Why some exotic species are deeply integrated into local cultures while others are reviled
One key challenge for invasive species management is finding support from local communities. Without local support, management plans can be severely compromised. What makes people support or reject management of invasive species can be linked to their perception of the target invasive species. In other words, it can be harder to control invasive species that are assimilated into the local community. We identify five factors associated with how quickly invasive species can become culturally assimilated. These factors are arrival time, economic impact, aesthetic value, effect on human health, and origin of nonnative species and of human immigrants. We suggest that understanding how these factors contribute to the incorporation of nonnative species into local cultures is important in determining effective control measures. In this vein, publicly accessible educational programs explaining the problems that invasive species produce will be required to implement effective invasive species management.Fil: Nuñez, Martin Andres. The Book of Daniel
In this four page artist's book, Olson employs a method similar to the Situationist strategy of "detournement" to create an absurd text which combines the italicized words found in a chapter of the "King James Bible : Book of Daniel"
The productivity puzzle in invasion science: Declining but persisting gender imbalances in research performance
We analyzed 27,234 publications published since the rise of the field of invasion science in 1980 to evaluate the presence of gender differences in research productivity, the extent of collaboration, and the research impact of those differences. Our analysis revealed significantly fewer female- than male-authored publications, both per capita and as a group, and the underrepresentation of women as first and single authors persists despite improvements in the gender gap. At the current rate of increase, gender parity in first authorship will not be achieved until 2100, and men will continue to constitute the principal voice of first or single authors in invasion science. Women collaborate with fewer coauthors and are cited less frequently than men, on average, which may influence recruitment and retention to more senior academic positions. These gender disparities in this aspect of research performance suggest that, although the gender gap is lessening, women experience barriers in invasion science.Group-Based Data

Book Review of \u3ci\u3eEncyclopedia of Biological Invasions\u3c/i\u3e, Edited by Daniel Simberloff and Marcel Rejmanek
Book review of Encyclopedia of Biological Invasions, edited by Daniel Simberloff and Marcel Rejmanek.
Species introductions and consequent biotic invasions and homogenization are major components of global change that are drawing increasing concern and various levels of actions and reactions around the world. Invasion ecology has advanced rapidly during the last few decades, and the discipline is now increasingly integrated with the social and economic sciences. A better understanding of the invasion process and its effects is thus clearly needed. For basic research, invasion biology offers fascinating and sometimes unique opportunities for testing certain ecological or evolutionary theories and principles because species invasions are so dynamic and because the expansion of invasive species (and thus contraction of native species) and their impacts can be observed over a relatively short time period. On the applied side, invasion biology is strongly tied to human social-economic activities and management policies that affect everyone\u27s daily life. Following a series of new books on the general topic of invasion biology (or ecology), this timely and important volume edited by Simberloff and Rejmanek represents the most comprehensive and updated information
