Performance Evaluation of Herbicide-Resistant Maize Hybrids under Striga Infestation

    No full text
Abstract: Striga hermonthica is the most widespread species affecting maize production and productivity in sub-Saharan Africa. Use of imidazolinone (imazapyr)-resistant (IR) maize genotypes is one of the few control options, which seem to be technically feasible and cost effective. A study was carried out to assess yield and agronomic performance of 21 herbicide-resistant maize hybrids introduced from CIMMYT for Striga control at Pawe, Ethiopia. Analysis of variance revealed significant genotypic difference for grain yield, days to anthesis, root lodging and ear aspect. Hybrids G8 and G7 were identified as promising varieties based on grain yield, ear aspect, and Striga emergence counts. The highest yielding IR maize hybrid (G8) outyielded the Striga-tolerant, commercial IR hybrid and local check by 89.4, 107.3 and 89%, respectively. The best IR hybrid in terms of grain yield (G8) had 81 and 64% less emerged Striga plants at compared with the Striga-tolerant check (G22) and local check (G25), respectively. Genotypic variance (s2G) estimates were larger than environment variance (s2 E) for grain yield, days to anthesis, root lodging and ear aspect. Very high heritability coupled with high genetic advance was observed for grain yield indicates the dominance of additive gene action in governing the trait which is fixable in subsequent generations. Grain yield showed significant and negative correlations with days to anthesis (rp = −0.69), root lodging (rp = −0.56), ear aspect (rp = −0.83) and plant aspect (rp=-0.79). A negative but not significant correlation coefficient between grain yield and Striga count was observed. Quantification of Land Use Change Impact on Ecosystem Service Value in Southern Ethiopian Rift Valley Lakes Basin at Biodiversity Hotspot Area

ABSTRACT Quantifying the Ecosystem Services Value(ESV) is essential to make socioeconomic activities environmentally sustainable in Ethiopia, where natural ecosystems are deteriorating, including in Protected Areas(PAs) due to increased anthropogenic pressures, Although ESV studies show progress, ESV coefficients for ecosystem services (ES) in Ethiopia have not yet been established. This study is the first to develop equivalent factors at the national level and coefficients at the district level for 23 ES types, following a unit value approach. It also quantified the total ESV and changes therein linked with land use change observed in Nechsar National Park between 2002 and 2040. Different datasets: land use/cover, ES valuation, empirical ESV studies, per unit area price of food crops, ESV of cultivated land for food production services, various statistical formulas, geospatial tools, price standardization indices and difference adjustment indices (ecological, economic, and social) were used in different steps of the study. The results (<0.5) of the sensitivity analysis indicated that the developed coefficients are adequately reliable to estimate ESV along with the area of land types in the study area. The results showed that NNP has experienced a continued reduction in its total ESV with US$ 4.08x106 and 1.01x106 net loss in the first- and second-time intervals, respectively. Forest land and woodland are the leading resources to provide essential ES. For 67.93% reduction in total ESV was attributed to the land loss from these land types from 2002 to 2020. Apart from the magnitude, the direction of land transitions considerably affects the spatiotemporal change/gain and loss/ ESV. The study provides site-specific and long-term evidence that can help stakeholders to understand the consequences of LUC, resolve interest conflicts over land use, and implement practicable interventions. The Impact of Intellectual Property Rights on Foreign Direct Investment

    No full text
While foreign direct investment (FDI) has been discussed extensively, little research has been undertaken on the nature and direction of the relationship between intellectual property rights protection and FDI. The author uses empirical findings based on a study of 27 countries to support the propositions that the level of intellectual property rights protection is a strong determinant of inward investment and that intellectual property rights have a greater impact on inward investment than many economic policy variables among certain country groups

Analisis Konsep Misi Social Gospel dan Relevansinya Bagi Misi Gereja Masa Kini

    No full text
Abstract. This article examines the concept of the the Social Gospel’ mission as a dialectical effort to find its relevance to the mission of the church today. Through this article the author presents the main ideas of the Social Gospel as a critique of the church's mission approach regarding social problems. The method used in this paper is a literature study. Through this study, the result is that Social Gospel theology which emphasizes the preaching of the Kingdom of God makes it against to conservative theology. However, the Social Gospel mission approach can be a critique to the conservative mission approach, so that the mission paradigm can be further expanded, not only paying attention to futuristic personal salvation, but also caring about social salvation today.

Inverse analysis in non-parametric multivariate analyses: distinguishing groups of associated species which covary coherently across samples

    No full text
For decades multivariate analysis has been recognised as being appropriate for the analysis and description of complex ecological datasets, such as are routinely generated in studies of biota along gradients in time or space. The main focus of analyses tends to be the description and analysis of patterns among samples and groups of samples. Early applications of multivariate analyses to ecological data also recognised the importance of, and gave equal weight to, understanding how variables (species or taxa, in biotic datasets) varied among samples and groups of samples, but such analyses have inherent difficulties. Among these are the facts that species do not vary independently of each other, that responses of species to gradients may not be monotonic, that there are generally many more species than samples, that abundances vary widely within and among species, and that some species are rare. Although some methods are routinely applied to explore species responses across and among samples to environmental gradients, few explicitly recognise that species do not vary independently. Within a very widely-used framework for the nonparametric multivariate analysis of ecological data we demonstrate how Similarity Profiles (SIMPROF) analysis and other approaches may be combined to analyse associations among species and to visualise those relationships. Type 2 SIMPROF determines whether observed associations could have arisen by chance. Type 3 SIMPROF detects statistically distinct subsets of species which respond to gradients in a coherent manner. How different groups respond is visualised using component line plots (coherent curves). We illustrate the method using a range of datasets. We show how the method discriminates groups of species which respond differently to a single gradient, or respond coherently to different environmental or anthropogenic pressure gradients. We demonstrate how these approaches extend naturally to analyses of other types of multivariate data where the identification of coherent groups of variables is of interest

Reversal of Burden of Proof in Case of the Crime of Illicit Enrichment: A Case Study

    No full text
This thesis aims at addressing questions such as what is reversal of onus of proof; is there a reversal of onus of proof in case of the crime of illicit enrichment; if any, its constitutionality. It answers the constitutionality question of the onus imposed on those who are accused of the crime of illicit enrichment under Ethiopian laws. The constitutionality test is made in view of the fundamental rights of accused persons that are guaranteed under the FDRE Constitution. To this end, this thesis embarks on by determining the existence or otherwise of reversal of onus of proof in case of the crime of illicit enrichment. Apart from theoretical explications, the discussion is backed up by examination of illustrative practical cases. Moreover, in addition to a discussion on the legal frameworks that govern the crime of illicit enrichment, the thesis examines the elements of and rationales behind criminalisation of illicit enrichment. After discussing all the above issues, the author argues that, in Ethiopia, in case of the crime of illicit enrichment, there is a reversal of onus of proof, and it infringes the constitutionally guaranteed rights of accused persons, unambiguously, the PoI and protection against selfincrimination. However, contrary to Article 9(1) of the FDRE Constitution, the author recommends not to nullify the proclamation‟s provision on the crime of illicit enrichment but to amend some constitutional provisions; particularly, the provision on the PoI and the protection against self-incrimination

US foreign trade zones and import intensity examining determinants of import intensity in US foreign trade zones

    No full text
Purpose: The paper aims to investigate the effects of several determinants of firm import intensity in US foreign trade zones (FTZs). Even though the major objective for the establishment of US FTZs is to encourage exports by facilitating the duty-free entry of imports, US firms have used it as a gateway to import goods into the US market. Currently, over 90 per cent of US FTZ output is consumed in the USA. The author examines the major determinants for such import intensity in US FTZs. Design/methodology/approach: The study is based on a survey that was conducted to explore the factors that influence import intensity of firms operating in US FTZs. Findings: The findings reveal that besides export orientation of firms, the most promising predictors of import intensity of firms operating in USA FTZs are the policy environment in the form of inverted tariff benefits and firm business strategy. Practical implications: The findings are important for managers presently operating in US FTZs or intend to do so in future. Originality/value: Even though there are numerous studies on free trade zones and exports, this is the first study to examine the import intensity of US FTZs and their determinants
