In her article "Can the Subaltern Speak?" (Spivak 1996), Gayatri Spivak argues that the subaltern's voice cannot be heard and will not be heard because of the all consuming power of a hegemony and the "nostalgia for lost origins" (1996: 204) which necessarily envelopes the subaltern. Ironically, her doubts in retrieving subaltern history follows her initial calls for Subaltern Studies to include the female subaltern

Banalities of subalternism: Positing the Tionghua Peranakan in the Colonial discourse

    No full text
Edward Said's Orientalism (1978). suggested that Orientalist discourse was a devious effort of the West to lure the colonized and the colonizer into an imaginary existence that would help ensure its domination of the East. Through the work of Homi K. Bhabha, this discourse was broadened to include the notion of delusive and elusive representations of the colonized "Other". When Lacan introduced the psychoanalytic approach to complement the interrogation of tropes in western historiography, it became conclusive that the colonial discourse would embody resistance in the form of subaltern voices from the movement of colonial encounter. This article hopes to posit the Tionghua peranakan people within this colonial discourse, claiming their subaltern marginality and diaspo[ricl experience as the impetus that propelled them into a head-on encounter with the colonial

    No full text
This paper scrutinizes five award-winning novels by five Sabah female writers and the issues of sexual discrimination, lack of opportunities, patriarchal hegemony and the negative perceptions of the body that plague Sabah Malay women. A discursive analysis of these issues is anchored upon a gynocritic feminist approach first introduced by Elaine Showalter in her famous essay entitled "Toward a Feminist Poetics" (Newton, 1997). The purpose of this study is to uncover the concept of the feminine "self" in the Sabah context through a thirty-year interrogation represented by these five female authors' novels and narrative styles, which include an exploration of their themes, language styles and poetics through the five novels entitled Malisiah by Obasiah Hj Usman (1986), Dari dalam Cermin by Azmah Nordin (1992), Gadis Adikara by Ruhaini Matdarin (2007), Pagi di Hujung Senja by Kathirina Susanna Tati (2013) and Helaian Linangkit by Dayangku Mastura Pg. According to John (1997), a novel is considered a "social symptom". Lucas's interpretation based on Jacques Lacan's concept that a work is a text of one's psyche is evident when the novel or literary work is scrutinized according to the changes in this case; the Indie literature of Malaysia. The latest literary phenomenon in Malaysia a “new” creative work that defies form but appears to be familiar. Although the works produced are novels and poems, they differ in form and content especially in the style of writing. According to Muhammad (2016), “Indie literature” is understood as a stream or culture that seeks freedom from any authority and mainstream. This definition is emphasized by mainstream Malay literary critics who view Malaysian Indie Literature as “protest literature” whose objective is freedom of expression. The majority of these literary works are written by young authors from between the ages of 20 and 35 years old. This research hopes to uncover the ideological aspect of Malaysian Indie Literature with the intent to move its definition from a binary opposite of mainstream Malay literature to a literary genre that should be regarded as a literary form through a textual analysis of a selected number of Malay Indie novels from 1990s until 2017. It is hoped that this article will reveal the purpose of novel creation according to the thoughts of the authors as reflected through the plot, themes, characters and messages that will throw light to the rise of Indie literature in the ethos of Malay Literature
