Lipid-soluble Vitamins A, D, and E in HIV-Infected Pregnant women in Tanzania.
There is limited published research examining lipid-soluble vitamins in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected pregnant women, particularly in resource-limited settings. This is an observational analysis of 1078 HIV-infected pregnant women enrolled in a trial of vitamin supplementation in Tanzania. Baseline data on sociodemographic and anthropometric characteristics, clinical signs and symptoms, and laboratory parameters were used to identify correlates of low plasma vitamin A (<0.7 micromol/l), vitamin D (<80 nmol/l) and vitamin E (<9.7 micromol/l) status. Binomial regression was used to estimate risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Approximately 35, 39 and 51% of the women had low levels of vitamins A, D and E, respectively. Severe anemia (hemoglobin <85 g/l; P<0.01), plasma vitamin E (P=0.02), selenium (P=0.01) and vitamin D (P=0.02) concentrations were significant correlates of low vitamin A status in multivariate models. Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) was independently related to low vitamin A status in a nonlinear manner (P=0.01). The correlates of low vitamin D status were CD8 cell count (P=0.01), high ESR (ESR >81 mm/h; P<0.01), gestational age at enrollment (nonlinear; P=0.03) and plasma vitamins A (P=0.02) and E (P=0.01). For low vitamin E status, the correlates were money spent on food per household per day (P<0.01), plasma vitamin A concentration (nonlinear; P<0.01) and a gestational age <16 weeks at enrollment (P<0.01). Low concentrations of lipid-soluble vitamins are widely prevalent among HIV-infected women in Tanzania and are correlated with other nutritional insufficiencies. Identifying HIV-infected persons at greater risk of poor nutritional status and infections may help inform design and implementation of appropriate interventions
A simple disc wind model for broad absorption line quasars
Approximately 20 per cent of quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) exhibit broad, blue-shifted absorption lines in their ultraviolet spectra. Such features provide clear evidence for significant outflows from these systems, most likely in the form of accretion disc winds. These winds may represent the ‘quasar’ mode of feedback that is often invoked in galaxy formation/evolution models, and they are also key to unification scenarios for active galactic nuclei (AGN) and QSOs. To test these ideas, we construct a simple benchmark model of an equatorial, biconical accretion disc wind in a QSO and use a Monte Carlo ionization/radiative transfer code to calculate the ultraviolet spectra as a function of viewing angle. We find that for plausible outflow parameters, sightlines looking directly into the wind cone do produce broad, blue-shifted absorption features in the transitions typically seen in broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs. However, our benchmark model is intrinsically X-ray weak in order to prevent overionization of the outflow, and the wind does not yet produce collisionally excited line emission at the level observed in non-BAL QSOs. As a first step towards addressing these shortcomings, we discuss the sensitivity of our results to changes in the assumed X-ray luminosity and mass-loss rate, Ṁwind. In the context of our adopted geometry, Ṁwind ∼ Ṁacc is required in order to produce significant BAL features. The kinetic luminosity and momentum carried by such outflows would be sufficient to provide significant feedback

Preliminary Validation of an Editable Virtual Reality Simulator for Minimally Invasive Surgical Training
MIS-SIM is a virtual reality (VR) environment designed and developed for the creation of virtual scenarios that can be used to train and acquire basic and advance laparoscopic skills. The environment is composed by a task editor where a content creator design and develop tasks for the simulator to play. Once they are completed, objective metrics are automatically stored and examined in MIS-SIM’s server so they can be displayed by an online platform. The project was validated in Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary where an experienced professor designed tasks for 16 young surgeons (PGY 3-4-5) from different surgical fields (gynaecology, general-, plastic-, vascular-, thoracic-, neurosurgery, etc.) with different experiences in laparoscopy. Each participant fulfilled each task as if they were completing them on physical simulator.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Medical Instruments & Bio-Inspired Technolog
Nietzsche: a verdade dionisíaca contraposta à verdade metafísica
Draft genome of the filarial nematode parasite Brugia malayi
Parasitic nematodes that cause elephantiasis and river blindness threaten hundreds of millions of people in the developing world. We have sequenced the approximately 90 megabase (Mb) genome of the human filarial parasite Brugia malayi and predict approximately 11,500 protein coding genes in 71 Mb of robustly assembled sequence. Comparative analysis with the free-living, model nematode Caenorhabditis elegans revealed that, despite these genes having maintained little conservation of local synteny during approximately 350 million years of evolution, they largely remain in linkage on chromosomal units. More than 100 conserved operons were identified. Analysis of the predicted proteome provides evidence for adaptations of B. malayi to niches in its human and vector hosts and insights into the molecular basis of a mutualistic relationship with its Wolbachia endosymbiont. These findings offer a foundation for rational drug design

Previous issue date: 2015-01-20This dissertation will analyze the Confer?ncias C?vicas (1904-1906) and the spelling book Terra Ga?cha (2013), both by Jo?o Sim?es Lopes Neto. On this basis, we intend to comprehend how the author has organized and expressed his ideas concerning the Brazilian nation, what were his inspirations and the lines of thought that most influenced him. With this in mind, this research aims to increase the understanding about Lopes Neto and his work. In other words, the objective is to understand him not only as a regionalist writer but as an intellectual who, from your region, thought about the Brazilian nation. This expansion of perspective about Lopes Neto contributes to a better understanding of the author and his work. When thinking about the Brazilian nation, Lopes Neto realized the lack of a civic education able to awaken in people "the spirit of the nation". Trying to solve this problem the author created a complex narrative in order to pay attention to the virtues and vices of the Brazilian nation, its different regions and cultures. For example, the spelling book would be a tool for teaching in Rio Grande do Sul. So it has special focus on the gaucho culture and tries to demonstrate that the various regions form the nation.
KAOSS: turbulent, but disc-like kinematics in dust-obscured star-forming galaxies at 1.3-2.6
We present spatially resolved kinematics of 27 ALMA-identified dust-obscured
star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at 1.3-2.6, as traced by H
emission using VLT/KMOS near-infrared integral field spectroscopy from the
"KMOS-ALMA Observations of Submillimetre Sources" (KAOSS) Large Programme. We
derive H rotation curves and velocity dispersion profiles for the
DSFGs, and find that among the 27 sources with bright, spatially extended
H emission, 24 display evidence for disc-like kinematics. We measure a
median inclination-corrected velocity at 2.2 of 19040kms and intrinsic velocity dispersion of
876kms for these disc-like sources. The kinematics yield
median circular velocities of 23020kms and dynamical
masses within 2 (7kpc radius) of (1.10.2)10M. Compared to less actively
star-forming galaxies, KAOSS DSFGs are both faster rotating with higher
intrinsic velocity dispersions, but have similar ratios,
median 2.50.5. We suggest that the kinematics of the DSFGs
are primarily rotation supported but with a non-negligible contribution from
pressure support, which may be driven by star formation or
mergers/interactions. We estimate the normalisation of the stellar mass
Tully-Fisher relation (sTFR) for the disc-like DSFGs and compare it with local
studies, finding no evolution at fixed slope between 2 and 0.
Finally, we show that the kinematic properties of the DSFG population are
consistent with them evolving into massive early-type galaxies, the dominant
0 population at these masses.Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS, updated

Expression of Plasmodium falciparum genes involved in erythrocyte invasion varies among isolates cultured directly from patients.
Plasmodium falciparum merozoites invade erythrocytes using a range of alternative ligands that includes erythrocyte binding antigenic proteins (EBAs) and reticulocyte binding protein homologues (Rh). Variation in the expression of some of these genes among culture-adapted parasite lines correlates with the use of different erythrocyte receptors. Here, expression profiles of four Rh genes and eba175 are analysed in a sample of 42 isolates cultured from malaria patients in Kenya. The profiles cluster into distinct groups, largely because of very strong negative correlations between the levels of expression of particular gene pairs (Rh1 versus Rh2b, eba175 versus Rh2b, and eba175 versus Rh4), previously associated with alternative invasion pathways in culture-adapted parasite lines. High levels of eba175 are seen in isolates in expression profile group I, and may be associated with sialic acid-dependent invasion. Groups II and III are, respectively, characterized by high levels of Rh2b and Rh4, and are more likely to be associated with sialic acid-independent invasion
