BCIs and Mobile Robots for Neurological Rehabilitation: practical applications of remote control
This project aims at testing the possible advantages of introducing a mobile robot as a physical input/output device in a Brain Computer Interface (BCI) system. In the proposed system, the actions triggered by the subject’s brain activity results in the motions of a physical device in the real world, and not only in a modification of a graphical interface. A goal-based system for destination detecting and the high entertainment level offered by controlling a mobile robot are hence main features for actually increase patients' life quality level
Who is the author of the 1876 Stefano manuscript?
For over one hundred years the Stefano manuscript was a private document in the possession of the Baccich family and descendants. It told a story of the 1875 Stefano shipwreck as narrated by the shipwreck survivor and the founding family patriarch Miho Baccich. In these circumstances the question of authorship of the manuscript was immaterial and did not arise as an issue. However, with the publication of the manuscript the author‟s name, or names, need to be formally attributed to it. It turns out that this is not such a clear-cut matter.
As we shall see, all informed sources attributed the authorship, and the ownership, of the manuscript to Miho Baccich. But the manuscript itself was written by Canon Stjepan Skurla – a priest from Miho‟s hometown of Dubrovnik. The question then arises: should Skurla also be considered as an author of the manuscript, or, even as the sole author (as some would have it)
Brain-Computer Interface in Chronic Stroke: sensorimotor closed-loop and contingent force feedback make the difference
Motor rehabilitation from stroke injury is of topic importance nowadays that neurological diseases have been become a medical urgency. Brain-Computer interfaces have been demonstrated to be helpful in the recovery of motor functions: In particular, the closed loop involving sensorimotor brain rhythms, assistive-robot training and proprioceptive feedback in an operant learning fashion is suspected to be the most effective way to promote the neural plasticity of the ipilesional hemisphere and to restore motor abilities. This study aimed at implementing such a scheme: One stroke patient in the chronic state was recluted and underwent the experiment both using the damaged arm and the healthy one, considered as control during the following analyses. Kinematic and neurophysiological outcomes confirmed the efficacy of this treatment and showed that a contingent force feedback can definitely improve motor accuracy of the upper limb
Preprocessing by a Bayesian Single-Trial Event-Related Potential Estimation Technique Allows Feasibility of an Assistive Single-Channel P300-Based Brain-Computer Interface
A major clinical goal of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) is to allow severely paralyzed patients to communicate their needs and thoughts during their everyday lives. Among others, P300-based BCIs, which resort to EEG measurements, have been successfully operated by people with severe neuromuscular disabilities. Besides reducing the number of stimuli repetitions needed to detect the P300, a current challenge in P300-based BCI research is the simplification of system’s setup and maintenance by lowering the number of recording channels. By using offline data collected in 30 subjects (21 amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients and 9 controls) through a clinical BCI with channels, in the present paper we show that a preprocessing approach based on a Bayesian single-trial ERP estimation technique allows reducing to 1 without affecting the system’s accuracy. The potentially great benefit for the practical usability of BCI devices (including patient acceptance) that would be given by the reduction of the number of channels encourages further development of the present study, for example, in an online setting
