Effect of silver content on the structure and antibacterial activity of silver-doped phosphate-based glasses
Staphylococcus aureus can cause a range of diseases, such as osteomyelitis, as well as colonize implanted medical devices. In most instances the organism forms biofilms that not only are resistant to the body's defense mechanisms but also display decreased susceptibilities to antibiotics. In the present study, we have examined the effect of increasing silver contents in phosphate-based glasses to prevent the formation of S. aureus biofilms. Silver was found to be an effective bactericidal agent against S. aureus biofilms, and the rate of silver ion release (0.42 to 1.22 µg·mm–2·h–1) from phosphate-based glass was found to account for the variation in its bactericidal effect. Analysis of biofilms by confocal microscopy indicated that they consisted of an upper layer of viable bacteria together with a layer (20 µm) of nonviable cells on the glass surface. Our results showed that regardless of the silver contents in these glasses (10, 15, or 20 mol%) the silver exists in its +1 oxidation state, which is known to be a highly effective bactericidal agent compared to that of silver in other oxidation states (+2 or +3). Analysis of the glasses by 31P nuclear magnetic resonance imaging and high-energy X-ray diffraction showed that it is the structural rearrangement of the phosphate network that is responsible for the variation in silver ion release and the associated bactericidal effectiveness. Thus, an understanding of the glass structure is important in interpreting the in vitro data and also has important clinical implications for the potential use of the phosphate-based glasses in orthopedic applications to deliver silver ions to combat S. aureus biofilm infections
Formation of nanoscale elemental silver particles via enzymatic reduction by Geobacter sulfurreducens
Geobacter sulfurreducens reduced Ag(I) (as insoluble AgCl or Ag+ ions), via a mechanism involving c-type cytochromes, precipitating extracellular nanoscale Ag(0). These results extend the range of metals known to be reduced by Geobacter species and offer a method for recovering silver from contaminated water as potentially useful silver nanoparticles
The grotesque on Jonathan Swift`s gulliver`s travels
Literary works become something which cannot be a part from the environment of the author. Simply, an author often produces a literary work as the expression of his/her imagination based on his/her environment. In the world of literature, there are three literary genres: poetry, prose (short story and novel), and drama. Furthermore, this research concentrates in analyzing the novel. The author of the novel which has been chosen as the object of analysis in this research is Jonathan Swift. This research totally identifies the appearances of grotesque on Jonathan Swift`s Gulliver`s Travels. The statements of this research are: How does Jonathan Swift represent the grotesque on Gulliver`s Travels? What is the purpose of grotesque usage on Jonathan Swift`s Gulliver`s Travels? Grotesque as an art and literary term means the expression of the estranged or alienated world. It has strong affinity with the physically abnormal. In analyzing the subject of materials, this research uses the descriptive method by doing the library research or textual analysis to get the descriptive method by doing the library research or textual analysis to get the descriptive data.
The research threats the work as a unity of thought in which the elements are interrelated. As the qualitative research, this research requires theoretical base and reasoning logic. In this case, this research takes the book of Philip Thomson`s Grotesque. Then, this research finds that there are some grotesque`s elements, extravagance, disharmony, abnormality, comic and terrifying, spreads within all of four parts of Gulliver`s Travels. Here, Swift tends to represents this elements of grotesque throughout the characters in each individual parts of Gulliver`s Travels, and hence these characters look as the strange or abnormal characters physically or mentally. This research also finds that the purpose of the grotesque usage on Gulliver`s Travels is aggressiveness. This is cannot be a part with the satire of Swift to the colonialism of England in eighteenth century. As the final conclusion, this research emphasizes the relation of grotesque, satire, and the background of author (Jonathan Swift) on Gulliver`s Travels
A dialogue on global infrastructure-led urbanization: Concepts and reorientations
The territorial and technological geographies of the planet are being rapidly and profoundly transformed and restructured in the 21st century. A massive surge of plans, visions, and investments is materializing through new connectivity infrastructure and operations of vast, extended transportation and logistical networks, with the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative serving as a prominent example. To scrutinize this context, in this article, we advocate for a shift from infrastructure-led development to infrastructure-led urbanization, emphasizing the urban as the key analytical terrain. We argue that the urban perspective reveals conceptual, geoeconomic, and geopolitical dimensions that are at the core of the transformations brought about by the implementation of global infrastructure. By mobilizing the authors’ urban research experience spanning Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America, and by stressing the vital value of on-the-ground and comparative research, we illustrate the complexities and specificities inherent in these projects. In doing so, we propose a collective dialogue that explores and reorients conceptual and methodological possibilities to capture the complex interplay of geoeconomic and geopolitical forces within what we term ‘global infrastructure-led urbanization’
'Giving honour to the Spirit' : a critical analysis and evaluation of the doctrine of pneumatological union in the Trinitarian theology of Jonathan Edwards in dialogue with Karl Barth
The extent to which the 'honour' of the Spirit influenced the theology of
Jonathan Edwards is a hitherto underdeveloped theme. Against a backdrop of
Patristic thought and in dialogue with the theology of Karl Barth, evaluation is
made of pneumatological union in Edwards' Trinitarian theology as this centres
on the nature and inter-relatedness of the 'three unions' that characterize his
theology: the union of the three Persons of the Trinity, the union of the saints
with God, and the union of the divine and human natures of Christ.
Edwards' seeks to honour the Spirit as the mutual love of the Father for the Son
within his Augustinian, Lockean model of the immanent Trinity, and as 'Person'
in the economy. The challenges of doing so within the limits of this
psychological model of the Trinity are evaluated in dialogue with the
Cappadocian Fathers and Barth.
In a manner patterned after union in the Trinity, Edwards gave prominence to the
concept of the pneumatological union of the saints with God in Christ, in
fulfilment of the self-glorifying purpose of God in creation and redemption.
Edwards' experiential theology of conversion, and his elevation of subjective
sanctification by the Spirit over objective justification in Christ, for assurance, is
contrasted with Barth's greater emphases on the Christological union of God
with humanity and objective justification in Christ. Barth's more contemplative
approach is contrasted with the overly introspective spirituality of Edwards.
Edwards' view of the role of the Spirit in the hypostatic union of God with
humanity in Christ, which is reflective of the other unions, is also evaluated in
light of Patristic, Reformed-Puritan and Barthian thought on the nature of the
humanity Christ assumed, and the doctrine of the vicarious humanity of Christ. A
more emphatic incarnational emphasis may have saved Edwards' Spirit-
honouring spirituality from an anthropocentricity which is ironical given that the
glory of God is his ontic doxological concern
