Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Cerrado fragments: multiple uses tree species for conservation of the Cerrado
O conhecimento da ecologia e da genética das espécies arbóreas que ocorrem nos fragmentos do Bioma Cerrado é uma etapa importante para a criação de programas conservacionistas. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram: i) identificar e selecionar fragmentos de Cerrado, na região de Três Lagoas – MS, que apresentam diversidade em relação à ocorrência de espécies arbórea; ii) localizar, nos fragmentos selecionados, os indivíduos das espécies arbóreas, que se destacam quanto as possibilidades de utilização de produtos não madeireiro; iii) marcar árvores matrizes, nas espécies arbóreas selecionadas, com base em caracteres de crescimento e na sua localização, para que os fragmentos possam ser denominados de “áreas de coleta de sementes – ACS”. O estudo foi realizado em quatorze fragmentos do Bioma Cerrado distribuídos em sete fazendas no município de Três Lagoas, (MS). A distância em quilômetros entre os fragmentos, variou de 3,0 a 64,8 km. O levantamento das espécies arbóreas ocorreu mensalmente entre os meses de julho a dezembro de 2012 e 2013. Todos os fragmentos foram visitados, e, nestes, foi realizado levantamento de diversidade das espécies arbóreas com potencial para produtos não madeireiros e madeireiros. A identificação das espécies arbóreas dos fragmentos foi feita a partir de caminhamento dentro da área e nas bordas, a considerar indivíduos reprodutivos. Para conhecer as estratégias ecológicas das espécies arbóreas de interesse, pesquisou-se sobre as características ecológicas: usos, síndrome de polinização, síndrome de dispersão e grupo sucessional. Foi proposto modelo de classificação para as espécies registradas o agrupamento em três classes sucessionais desenvolvidas para o Cerrado. No levantamento de espécies arbóreas, foram registradas 89 espécies pertencentes a 37 famílias. Dentre as 89 espécies, 20 apresentaram as maiores frequências, contribuindo com 50,86% da representatividade. Sendo as famílias Fabaceae, Bignoniaceae, Apocynaceae e Annonaceae com o maior número de espécies. As espécies registradas têm os maiores usos madeireiro, ornamental, medicinal e melífera. A maioria das espécies é polinizadas por abelhas, e apresentam dispersão zoocórica e anemocórica. Conclui se que a os fragmentos de Cerrado apresenta espécies de interesse econômico e ecológico para implantação de áreas de coletas de sementes com potencial de produção de sementes, de qualidade superior, aliando a preservação e conservação desses locais. Portanto, alto índice de dissimilaridade e potencial para seleção de espécies arbóreas com produtos não madeireiros com potencialidade para serem utilizadas em sistemas de recomposição de áreas de preservação permanente e reservas legais. A partir da proposta de sucessão, para as espécies arbóreas do Cerrrado, foi possível caracterizar, de forma eficiente, que a fitofisionomia, nesses fragmentos, está com a mesma tendência, ou seja, de passar de Cerrado para Cerradão. Os dados gerados permite conhecer as funcionalidades de polinização, dispersores, diversidade de espécies e suas potencialidades para usos que podem ser utilizados para definir o manejo desses fragmentos.Knowledge of the ecology and genetics of tree species occurring in the Cerrado Biome fragments is an important step towards the creation of conservation programs. The objectives of this work were: i) to identify and select Cerrado fragments, in the Três Lagoas - MS region, which present diversity in relation to the occurrence of arboreal species; ii) to locate, in the selected fragments, the individuals of the tree species, which stand out as the possibilities of use of non-timber products; and (iii) marking selected tree species, based on growth characters and their location, so that the fragments can be referred to as "ACS - seed collection areas". The study was carried out in fourteen fragments of the Cerrado Biome distributed in seven farms in Três Lagoas, (MS). The distance in kilometers between the fragments ranged from 3.0 to 64.8 km. The survey of tree species occurred monthly between July and December of 2012 and 2013. All the fragments were visited, and, in these, a survey was carried out on the diversity of tree species with potential for non-timber and timber products. The identification of the tree species of the fragments was made from walking within the area and at the edges, to consider reproductive individuals. In order to know the ecological strategies of the arboreal species of interest, we investigated the ecological characteristics: uses, pollination syndrome, dispersion syndrome and successional group. It was proposed classification model for the species recorded the grouping in three successional classes developed for the Cerrado. In the survey of tree species, 89 species belonging to 37 families were registered. Among the 89 species, 20 presented the highest frequencies, contributing with 50.86% of the representativity. Being the families Fabaceae, Bignoniaceae, Apocynaceae and Annonaceae with the largest number of species. The registered species have the greatest uses for timber, ornamental, medicinal and melífera. Most species are pollinated by bees, and exhibit zoocoric and anemocoric dispersion. It is concluded that the Cerrado fragments present species of economic and ecological interest for the implantation of areas of seed collection with potential of seed production, of superior quality, combining the preservation and conservation of these sites. Therefore, a high index of dissimilarity and potential for selection of tree species with non-timber products with the potential to be used in systems of restoration of permanent preservation areas and legal reserves. From the proposal of succession, for the tree species of the Cerrrado, it was possible to characterize, in an efficient way, that the phytophysiognomy, in these fragments, is with the same tendency, that is, of going from Cerrado to Cerradão. The data generated allows to know the pollination functionalities, dispersers, species diversity and their potentialities for uses that can be used to define the management of these fragments
Reflorestamento ciliar à margem do Reservatório da Hidrelétrica de Ilha Solteira em diferentes modelos de plantio
As matas ciliares são áreas diretamente afetadas por construção de hidrelétricas, e a sua destruição influencia a estabilidade das áreas que margeiam os rios, contribuindo para o assoreamento de reservatórios, o empobrecimento do solo e, consequentemente, a redução da biodiversidade local. Neste contexto desenvolveram-se várias pesquisas propondo diferentes modelos de recuperação. Sendo assim, o presente trabalho tem como objetivos estudar o comportamento silvicultural de várias espécies arbóreas em condições de mata ciliar e avaliar as propriedades físicas e químicas do solo do reflorestamento ciliar à margem do reservatório da Hidrelétrica de Ilha Solteira localizado na Fazenda de Ensino, Pesquisa e Extensão da UNESP, Campus de Ilha Solteira, no município de Selvíria (MS). O reflorestamento foi plantado em 1986 em módulos, existindo dois modelos com números diferentes de espécies. O modelo I é composto por 21 espécies, plantadas em 33 módulos, e o modelo II por 14 espécies em 13 módulos. O espaçamento utilizado para o plantio das espécies foi de 2 x 3 m. Os caracteres silviculturais avaliados foram: altura total das plantas (ALT, em m), diâmetro a altura do peito (DAP, em cm), área basal (G, em cm2) e a porcentagem de sobrevivência (SOB, em %). Na análise química do solo foi determinado: fósforo, potássio, cálcio e magnésio pelo método de extração com resina trocadora de íons, matéria orgânica e hidrogênio mais alumínio. As propriedades físicas do solo estudadas foram macroporosidade, microporosidade, porosidade total e densidade do solo. Realizou-se, também, o levantamento da regeneração natural que ocorreu dentro dos modelos de plantio. Being like this, the present work has as objectives to study the behavior silvicultural of several arboreal species in conditions of riparian forest and to evaluate the physical and chemical properties of the soil of the riparian reforestation to the margin of the reservoir of hydroelectric power station of Ilha Solteira located in Fazenda de Ensino, Pesquisa e Extensão of UNESP, Campus of Ilha Solteira, in the municipal district of Selvíria (MS). Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
