The master's thesis "Assessment of the Provision of the Content About Health Issues in Latvian Public Media: Interviews with Public Media Governors, Programme Makers, and Experts" aims to evaluate the performance of Latvian public media in providing content about health issues and to develop proposals on how to strengthen the contribution of public media to the promotion of public health. The theoretical part of the master's thesis describes the concept of public health and the role and tasks of media in public health, the concept of public value and public value in public media, which justify the role of public media and the contribution to public health, as well as the context of Latvian public media, namely the public order and in it the implied task for public media in relation to public health. In the work, the research object is Latvian public media, while the research subject is the work of public media with content about health issues. Semi-structured interviews were used as a research method in the master's thesis, while thematic analysis was performed for data analysis. In total, 16 semi-structured interviews were conducted with SEPLP members, public media programme makers, and experts – media experts and public health experts - in order to find out, firstly, how interviewees understand and define the role and tasks of public media in public health, providing content about health issues, and secondly, how SEPLP and experts assess the performance of public media, the strengths and weaknesses in providing content about health issues in Latvian public media, and what improvements are expected. The main conclusions derived from the interview data are that the tasks of public media in public health, providing content about health issues, are to inform and educate the public about health, to inspire, and to get involved in solving problems. According to SEPLP and experts, there is currently a lack of analytical genre content or in-depth analysis about health issues, evaluating statistical data, causal relationships, and other aspects that would help promote public understanding and knowledge about health. SEPLP and experts indicate the need for more targeted content that meets the needs and interests of different groups of society, which are determined by the group's age, gender, level of knowledge in health issues, and other aspects. It is estimated that currently, Latvian public media in public health, reflecting content about health issues, act more reactively than proactively. Specifically, more content about health issues is provided in response to actual events; therefore, it is concluded that it is necessary to work more with a preventive approach to help prevent possible health risks in the future and improve and strengthen public knowledge and skills in health matters

In bachelors’s thesis ''Framing of the Covid-19 pandemic in LTV1 programme ''Aizliegtais paņēmiens'': analyze of information sources'' arguments made in broadcast episodes are being researched, and position against coronavirus and it’s caused Covid-19 disease and Covid-19 vaccine and vaccination as important part of pandemic. Bachelors’s thesis is creating perspective on the matter of how the media are creating news and providing information to the society about Covid-19 virus and disease in times of crisis. The aim of the thesis is to find out what kind of frames has been used in TV programme “Aizliegtais Paņēmiens” representing Covid-19 pandemic. Theoretical part of the work describes social constructionism and how media participates in the social construction of reality by creating news, framing theory which is an important piece of the work to understand how media use different types of frames and how information sources can be framing elements. As well as work, the theoretical base has created a research overview about Covid-19 reflections in media. And describing media role, functions in crisis situations and in society health communication. In the work research using quantitative content analysis and framing analysis, it is being studied how broadcast through information source selection and editorial toward arguments (position) frames Covid-19 pandemic and how diverse are these frames. Research selection has been created by broadcast “Aizliegtais Paņēmiens” episodes, which aired between January 2020 and December 2021 with focus on Covid-19. During the research, a category system for arguments is created, by doing pilot-research, and category system for information sources or the authors of the statement, during coding, the arguments expressed in the program are identified, the messages that are the basis for positioning for or against: A) Coronavirus and its caused Covid-19 disease. B) Covid-19 vaccine, vaccination. The obtained arguments, using an inductive framing analysis approach, are consolidated by thematic groups creating frameworks that are analyzed and described in the empirical part

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
