    Ventral motor thalamic projections to prelimbic cortex in cost-benefit decision-making

One brain area that shows disrupted activity in Parkinson's disease are the ventral motor thalamic nuclei. Input from the ventral motor thalamic nuclei to prelimbic cortical layer 1 may excite and inhibit corticostriatal neurons in deeper layers of prelimbic cortex. Prelimbic corticostriatal neurons are important in cost-benefit decision-making. Hence, ventral motor thalamic input to prelimbic cortex may also be involved in cost-benefit decision-making and disruption of their activity in Parkinsonian patients may play a crucial role in impaired decision-making. This thesis addresses the first of these two hypotheses. In particular, I aimed to (1) investigate the innervation pattern of ventromedial projections to prelimbic cortical layer 1, and (2) to determine whether optogenetic inhibition of ventral motor thalamic axon terminals in prelimbic cortical layer 1 changes choice behavior of rats on a cost-benefit decision-making paradigm. A combination of anterograde tracing, immunohistochemistry and light microscopy revealed that ventromedial thalamic axon terminals in prelimbic cortical layer 1 make contacts onto dendrites of pyramidal neurons, corticostriatal neurons and layer 1 inhibitory interneurons. Systematic random sampling further indicated that the majority of contacts onto dendritic tufts of pyramidal neurons are made on those of corticostriatal neurons, and that layer 1 inhibitory interneurons receive less input from ventral motor thalamic nuclei than pyramidal neurons. Optogenetic inhibition of ventral motor thalamic axon terminals in prelimbic cortical layer 1 significantly changed choice behavior of rats on a cost-benefit decision-making paradigm. Sprague-Dawley rats were offered a choice between a high benefit-high cost and a low benefit-low cost option. Optogenetic inhibition induced a bias towards the high benefit-high cost option, even though the perception of benefit and cost values of animals remained unchanged. The results indicate that ventral motor thalamic nuclei are critical in cost-benefit decision-making and that they may modulate the activity of prelimbic pyramidal neurons on this paradigm. The idea that ventral motor thalamic nuclei are primarily involved in motor control must be reevaluated and their potential role in choice behavior should be explored further in future studies.doctoral thesi

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Anatomical Connections of Primate Mediodorsal and Motor Thalamic Nuclei with the Cortex

    Non-sensory thalamic nuclei interact with the cortex through thalamocortical and cortico-basal ganglia-thalamocortical loops. Reciprocal connections between the mediodorsal thalamus (MD) and the prefrontal cortex are particularly important in cognition, while the reciprocal connections of the ventromedial (VM), ventral anterior (VA), and ventrolateral (VL) thalamus with the prefrontal and motor cortex are necessary for sensorimotor information processing. However, limited and often oversimplified understanding of the connectivity of the MD, VA, and VL nuclei in primates have hampered development of accurate models that explain their contribution to cognitive and sensorimotor functions. The current prevalent view suggests that the MD connects with the prefrontal cortex, while the VA and VL primarily connect with the premotor and motor cortices. However, past studies have also reported diverse connections that enable these nuclei to integrate information across a multitude of brain systems. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the anatomical connectivity of the primate MD, VA, and VL with the cortex. By synthesizing recent findings, we aim to offer a valuable resource for students, newcomers to the field, and experts developing new theories or models of thalamic function. Our review highlights the complexity of these connections and underscores the need for further research to fully understand the diverse roles of these thalamic nuclei in primates.31 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Prelimbic cortical targets of ventromedial thalamic projections include inhibitory interneurons and corticostriatal pyramidal neurons in the rat

    Ventromedial thalamic axons innervate cortical layer I and make contacts onto the apical dendritic tuft of pyramidal neurons. Optical stimulation of ventromedial thalamic axon terminals in prefrontal cortical areas in mouse brain slices evokes responses in corticocortical, corticothalamic and layer I inhibitory interneurons. Using anterograde tracing techniques and immunohistochemistry in male Sprague–Dawley rats, we provide anatomical evidence that ventromedial thalamic axon terminals in prelimbic cortex make contacts onto pyramidal neurons and, in particular, onto corticostriatal neurons as well as layer I inhibitory interneurons. Using stereology, we made quantitative estimates of contacts in uppermost prelimbic layer I onto dendrites of pyramidal neurons, corticostriatal neurons and layer I inhibitory interneurons. Prefrontal cortex has long been associated with decision making. Specifically, corticostriatal neurons in rat prelimbic cortex play an important role in cost–benefit decision making. Although recent experiments have detailed the physiology of this area in thalamocortical circuits, the extent of the impact of ventromedial thalamic input on corticostriatal neurons or layer I inhibitory interneurons has not been explored. Our quantitative anatomical results provide evidence that most ventromedial thalamic input to pyramidal neurons is provided to corticostriatal neurons and that overall more contacts are made onto the population of excitatory than onto the population of inhibitory neurons.journal articl

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
