Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
An exploration of young South African Indian women’s lived experiences of the intergenerational transmission of trauma in the post-Apartheid context in Johannesburg

displacement. However, there is still a paucity of trauma related research conducted amongst
individuals of Indian descent. In an attempt to address this gap, the current research focuses
on the lived experiences of intergenerational transmission of trauma on young South African
Indian women. The aim of this study was to capture and illuminate the perceived, rich and
subjective lived experiences of young South African Indian women, with an emphasis on
highlighting how their experiences of intergenerational trauma may influence their identities
today. Historical trauma theory was the primary lens through which the intergenerationally
embedded lived experiences of Indian women were interpreted. A total of five participants
were interviewed using semi-structured interviews to gain rich and detailed information of
their experiential reality. The data gathered was analysed and interpreted using thematic
analysis. This research study recognises the unique challenges faced by South African Indian
women in integrating their different ‘selves’ within the various spaces they occupy. Through
the findings, participants reflected on their lived experiences, emphasising how rigid
mindsets and unique fears were cultivated, through the processes of their parents’ and
grandparents’ collective traumas. Participants further highlighted the role of culture and
parenting styles in their own lives, which can be understood as significant mechanisms
through which certain values and collective traumas were transmitted to them. Furthermore,
they highlighted how these all came to impact on their own identities, elaborating on their
struggles between their ‘individual’ and ‘collective’ selves, associated shame and guilt and
perfectionism. Intergenerational trauma can be understood as having a significant effect,
affecting South African Indian women’s identities and resultant relationship choices, mental

Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Exploring lived experiences and coping strategies employed by black women in the SANDF post deployment-related trauma

However, there is dearth of research studies that focuses on coping with trauma amongst the SANDF members following deployment, especially women. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to explore the lived experiences of Black women in the SANDF and how they cope following deployment-related trauma. Data was collected by means of semi structured interviews among six participants who provided a rich detailed description of their lived experiences and coping strategies they used following a traumatic encounter. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to interpret and analyse the data gathered. The findings of the study illuminated participants’ lived experiences of deployment, and the coping strategies they utilised following deployment-related trauma. The participants highlighted the emotional and psychological manifestations of their traumatic experiences, the role of their support system, as well as the barriers to seeking psychological services. They also highlighted positive aspects, shared lessons they learned from deployment and as well as challenges they were confronted with both during and post deployment. Given the complexity of trauma, it is therefore recommended that future studies look at the effectiveness of existing interventions put in place to combat the effects of deployment related-trauma in the SANDF, as well as the impact of deployment on the family of deployed soldier.PsychologyMA (Research Psychology)UnrestrictedFaculty of Humanitie
An exploration of the intrapsychic experiences of male IPV perpetrators through Object Relations Theory

intimate partner violence (IPV) has examined victims’ experiences and the impact on their
psychological well-being. There is a dearth of literature on perpetrators’ experiences,
especially their intrapsychic conflicts and how that may be significant in their perpetration of
IPV. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to explore the intrapsychic dynamics involved in
the experiences of male IPV perpetrators. Consequently, object relations theory (ORT) was
employed as an interpretive lens through which the perpetrators’ internal and thus external
object representation was interpreted. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five
male perpetrators to shed light on their emotive and experiential reality in perpetrating IPV.
To interpret and understand their experiences, interpretive thematic analysis (ITA) was
employed to analyse the data. The findings revealed that the perpetrators experienced
remorse, shame, and guilt consequent to the harm they had inflicted on their partners.
Furthermore, it was through internalised persecutory objects that they represented and
experienced themselves in relation to their external reality. Unresolved psychic conflicts,
which originated specifically from self-object relational dynamics, were attributed as being
significant in IPV perpetration. The caregiver-child relationships the perpetrators described
informed external and internal representations of the self and other. These representations
were thus characterised by unfulfilled needs, neglect and aggression. One may deduce that
the development of the personality structure in the internalisations of self-other
representations influences how life is experienced. IPV is therefore a re-enactment of
unresolved early childhood trauma. These findings shed light on the intrapsychic dynamics
of IPV perpetrators, which should be considered in the development of effective IPV

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
