Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Hemp as a Livestock Feedstuff: A Review of Current Literature
Hemp was removed from the list of controlled substances in the 2018 Farm Bill, making regulated hemp production legal in the United States. Kentucky agriculturalists and entrepreneurs are at the cutting edge of the United States hemp production and processing industries. Hemp production generally falls into one of three categories: grain, fiber, or floral (CBD extraction). Each production category also produces byproducts; one such byproduct is meal. In order to make hemp oil and fiber processing viable, markets for the remaining meal must be found. The high fiber, fat, and protein of hemp meal make it a potential feedstuff for animal agriculture and a potential substitute for soybean meal in many livestock diets. Despite the potential feedstuff value of hemp, nutrition is not the only factor in determining the future of hemp meal in livestock feed. Agriculturalists and consumers are socially biased on the topic of hemp production, which may prevent full utilization of the crop. Additionally, hemp products face regulatory challenges before they can be incorporated into livestock feedstuffs legally. The purpose of this literature review is to describe current research on the nutritional viability, producer acceptance, and legality of hemp products and byproducts as livestock feedstuffs
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Factors influencing the perceived efficacy of communicating agricultural messages through social media
The use of social media and specifically Twitter is a growing trend within agricultural
communications. Social media allows individuals to publish content in real-time for little
to no cost. This research examined the factors that lead to the perception of successful
communication through Twitter. Two populations were studied, agricultural
communicators who were members of 1 or more of 5 professional organizations, and
members of the American Quarter Horse Association, an agriculturally-based
organization that uses Twitter to communicate with members. Researchers collected data
on use of Twitter, number of Tweets sent and received, number of followers and
following relationships, age, time spent per day using Twitter, and use of auxiliary means
to access information transmitted via Twitter. This auxiliary variable included the use of
subject keywords, called hashtags, within messages, and the use of search engines to
access tweets of interest. These seven variables were then regressed upon on perceived
efficacy to send messages and perceived efficacy to receive messages to make two
mathematical models to predict perceived efficacy of Twitter communications. The
model for sending efficacy had an adjusted R2 of .215. The model for efficacy of Twitter
in receiving messages had an adjusted R2 of .216. Variables that contributed the most to
the models were the number of followers, number following, and the use of auxiliary
means to access information. Researchers proposed a graphical model to represent
communication within Twitter
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Production Practices for Dwarf Capsicum annuum when grown as an alternative to Euphorbia pulcherrima
Each year, tens of millions of Euphorbia pulcherrima are grown and sold in the United States during the winter holiday season. While beautiful and widely associated with this time of year, Euphorbia pulcherrima offer a very limited life span and require significant agronomic chemical inputs. This research looked at a potential alternative to Euphorbia pulcherrima, dwarf Capsicum annuum. In this initial phase of a four phase research portfolio, researchers evaluated various horticultural production practices for Capsicum annuum and the impact on days to finish, survivability, and visual appeal of plants. Rearchers grew 200 dwarf capiscum annuums under three different growing conditions - commercial fluorescent grow lights, LED grow lights, and greenhouse conditions. All plants were started in 200 cell trays and transplanted to 1801 flats before being moved to treatment conditions. Of the three growing conditions, commercial fluorescent grow lights produced the most marketable capsicum annuum plants with nearly 100 percent of plants in this treatment reaching marketable size and quality within the time period studied. Additional research is warranted concerning the impacts of ambient temperature on finishing time and factors that impact consumer acceptance of this Euphorbia pulcherrima alternative
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
