The biogeography and biodiversity of the Namibian intertidal seaweed flora
No full textBibliography: leaves 149-160.There have been very few intertidal studies carried out on the Namibian coast. With respect to seaweeds in particular there have been a number of species lists and shore descriptions, but very little research into the biogeography, diversity or ecology. One of the reasons for the lack of research is probably that much of the 1500 km coast is inaccessible. The coastline is relatively straight with few inlets or bays and comprises mostly sandy beaches, with few rocky shores. Estimates range from 5-16% of rocky shores for the total coast length, and as a result there is relatively little substrate on which seaweed can attach. The dominant current is the northward, slow-flowing Benguela current. Upwelling also occurs here due to long shore winds, which bring cool, nutrient-rich water to the surface. In this study the Namibian coast was divided into three regions, largely governed by accessibility to the coast, viz. southern, central and northern Namibian. Most of the Namibian coast is subject to severe wave action, as a result wave-exposed shores were predominantly chosen. The degree of wave exposure was determined by the degree to which the site was open to the ocean. Sites that were completely or largely protected from incoming swells were not included. Three sites in the southern region were semi-exposed, in that they occurred within relatively large bays and were partially protected from dominant winds, they were however relatively exposed to the open ocean. Two to three transects lines were taken on each shore, along which quadrats were sampled at regular intervals. The material was taken back to the laboratory, sorted and analysed. Multivariate techniques were used as diagnostic tools in the interpretation of the data. Detailed seaweed species data were collected from all samples (biomass of individual species as well as general species collections), while data on major sessile invertebrate groups and amount of sand were also collated
Rapid Profiling of Marine Notches Using a Handheld Laser Distance Meter
No full textA rapid, single-user profiling method for rocky shores is described. The Leica Disto D8 handheld laser distance meter
measures distance up to 100 m and inclination in 360 degrees. It automatically calculates horizontal distance and vertical elevation. Memory storage accommodates data for 30 measurement points, allowing easy plotting of shore profiles. This technique allows even inaccessible, dangerous, and overhanging cliff faces to be evaluated faithfully and within minutes. It is a major improvement over standard methods that often involve risky coasteering and climbing. Examples are given from marine notches in Thailand
Billiken as Transcultural Object from American Mascot to Japanese Pop Deity
No full textThis article examines Billiken’s transcultural journey from American novelty mascot (1908) to cultural icon, illuminating early twentieth-century Pacific exchange networks and patterns of cultural adaptation. Drawing on American and Japanese archives, it demonstrates how this commercial figure, born from Progressive Era optimism and incorporating Japanese (and Orientalist) design elements, was transformed within Japanese religious and cultural frameworks. The study analyzes Billiken’s metamorphosis from “good luck” commodity to quasi-religious icon, particularly in Osaka’s Shinsekai district, where strategic marketing drove his its late twentieth-century revival after decades of obscurity. While largely forgotten in America and elsewhere, Billiken’s endurance in Osaka challenges narratives of cultural imperialism and simple glocalization, revealing instead how transcultural objects can undergo ontological transformation through local agency, independent of their origins
Bouwlogistieke innovaties weerbarstig te implementeren
No full textToelevering van bouwmaterialen aan bouwprojecten is complex en verregaande gesegregeerd. De bouwsector staat voor een kans te innoveren op het vlak van de bouwlogistiek. In het verleden is ervaring opgedaan met ‘best-practices’ die voldoende kansen bieden de noodzakelijk innovatie door te voeren. Via proeftuinen wordt in het TKI-project ‘4C in Bouwlogistiek’ gewerkt aan het implementeren van de ‘best-practices’: bouwlogistiek hubs, bouwtickets, vandaag voor morgen, opstelstrips en mobiele voorraadcontainers. Ervaring leert dat cultuurverschillen tussen bouwkundigen en logistici, en gebrek aan meten en vastleggen van gegevens de implementatie bemoeilijken. Echte innovatie gaat mogelijk komen van bedrijven die logistiek geheel anders gaan doen. Voorbeelden van concepten die voor innovatie in bouwlogistiek kunnen zorgen zijn te vinden bij: IKEA, Toyota, Zara, Uber.
