Bioerosion on shore platforms developed in the Waitemata Formation, Auckland
Bioerosion - the removal of lithic substrate by the erosive activities of living organisms- has not previously been discussed for New Zealand shore platforms. This paper aims at drawing attention to bioerosion as a process active in shore platform development. Detailed reference is made to bioerosion occurring on the alternating sandstones and siltstones of the Waitemata Formation found outcropping on the coastline around Auckland. In this area several facets of shore platform morphology may be attributed to the direct effects of boring and browsing marine organisms. A classification of animals causing bioerosion, based on mechanism of erosion, is presented, and the geomorphic significance of the various groups discussed
The role of mass-movement in shore platform development along the Gisborne coastline, New Zealand
Tidal shore platforms form a conspicuous part of the coastal scenery north of Gisborne, New Zealand. Some of these platforms are being extended landward under present-day conditions. Present widening results primarily from cliff-retreat by mass-movement. The coincidence in distribution of areas of wave convergence, mass-movement and shore platforms suggests a genetic connection between these marine and subaerial process and response elements. Various types of mass-movement are involved in cliff-retreat, notably slumps, flows, debris slides and soil and rock falls. While the products of such mass-movement forms are removed by wave action, extensive boulder fields on some shore platforms indicate that removal is not always complete. Not all of the shore platforms on this coast are being widened at present. Widening has ceased where active mass-movement is not occurring

A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1
Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1

The spectroscopic evolution of the recurrent nova T Pyxidis during its 2011 outburst. I. The optically thick phase and the origin of moving lines in novae
Aims: We aim to derive the physical properties of the recurrent nova T Pyx and the structure of the ejecta during the early stages of expansion of the 2011 outburst.
Methods: The nova was observed with high resolution spectroscopy (R ≈ 65 000), from one day after discovery of the outburst and until the last visibility of the star at the end of May 2011. The interstellar absorption lines of Na I, Ca II, CH, CH+, and archival H I 21 cm emission line observations were used to determine a kinematical distance. Interstellar diffuse absorption features have been used to determine the extinction independent of previous assumptions. Sample Fe-peak line profiles show the optical depth and radial velocity evolution of the discrete components.
Results: We propose a distance to T Pyx ≥ 4.5 kpc, with a strict lower limit of 3.5 kpc (the previously accepted distance). We derive an extinction, E(B - V) ≈ 0.5 ± 0.1, that is higher than previous estimates. The first observation, Apr. 15, displayed He I, He II, C III, and N III emission lines and a maximum velocity derived from the P Cyg profiles of the Balmer and He I lines of ≈2500 km s-1 that is characteristic of the fireball stage. These ions were undetectable in the second spectrum, Apr. 23, and we use the recombination time to estimate the mass of the ejecta, 10-5f Msun for a filling factor f. Numerous absorption-line systems were detected in the Balmer, Fe-peak, Ca II, and Na I lines, mirrored in broader emission-line components, that showed an "accelerated" displacement in velocity. We also show that the time sequence of these absorptions, which are common to all lines and arise only in the ejecta, can be described by a recombination front moving outward in the expanding gas without either a stellar wind or circumstellar collisions. Rapid Profiling of Marine Notches Using a Handheld Laser Distance Meter
A rapid, single-user profiling method for rocky shores is described. The Leica Disto D8 handheld laser distance meter
measures distance up to 100 m and inclination in 360 degrees. It automatically calculates horizontal distance and vertical elevation. Memory storage accommodates data for 30 measurement points, allowing easy plotting of shore profiles. This technique allows even inaccessible, dangerous, and overhanging cliff faces to be evaluated faithfully and within minutes. It is a major improvement over standard methods that often involve risky coasteering and climbing. Examples are given from marine notches in Thailand
