Atomic Modelling of Oxidized Crystalline InAs(100) Surface with First Principles and Bayesian Optimization
This study examines the surface reconstruction of the InAs(100)-ζ(4×2), the initial oxygen adsorption sites on the surface and their influence on the reconstructed optimized surface structure using a combined methodology of Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and Bayesian Optimization Structure Search (BOSS).
A detailed computational model of the InAs(100)-ζ(4×2) surface was systematically reconstructed and optimized across slab thicknesses ranging from 8 to 16 atomic layers, establishing 12 layers as the converged, stable thickness. Subsequently, an oxygen atom was placed near the reconstructed surface, and BOSS was employed to effectively map the potential energy landscape and predict the optimal adsorption configurations. A one-dimensional BOSS exploration optimized the oxygen atom’s vertical position above the surface, and a two-dimensional BOSS exploration sampled possible lateral adsorption coordinates across the surface unit cell. Predicted atomic adsorption sites of the oxygen atoms identified by BOSS were fully relaxed with DFT to confirm stability and obtain precise adsorption energies.
The results reveal ten energetically favourable oxygen adsorption configurations on InAs(100)-ζ(4×2) reconstruction. In the most stable structures, oxygen binds between the surface indium-arsenic atoms, consistent with the general tendency of oxygen to preferentially oxidize group III-V elements. The BOSS methodology successfully located these adsorption sites with far fewer energy evaluations than a conventional potential energy surface search, demonstrating its efficiency for complex surface systems.
In future studies, these findings can be used as the foundation for further oxygen adsorption research on the surface to improve passivation strategies and support the development of more accurate models for InAs/oxide interfaces in electronic and optoelectronic devices
HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE ORANYAN CULTURAL FESTIVAL IN NEW OYO: A STRATEGIC MEASURE TO PRESERVE YORÙBÁ ANTIQUITIES IN THE 21ST CENTURY
This study investigated the different ways in which Yorùbá cultural indigenous identities are presented to the world in contemporary times through the Oranyan festivals. The Oranyan festival in New Oyo is a traditional celebration of Yorùbá heritage, with roots dating back to the late 14th century. The cultural festivals of Oyo Yorùbá are diverse, but the Oranyan festival is unique in New Oyo because of its global acceptance orchestrated by His Royal Highness, the Alaafin of Oyo, the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi Olayiwola III. The festival is one of the special annuals that attracts people from different parts of the universe. The event, since its commencement, has uniquely portrayed Yorùbá cultural values, mainly to present Yorùbá cultural values from a historical perspective against Eurocentric views, and characterised by handmade attire, sculptures, liturgical objects and other traditional instruments. This paper gave an in-depth analysis of the historical development of the Oranyan festival among the Yorùbá and its impact on global assessment in the African past. The study used primary and secondary data to elicit information. Primary sources involved archival materials, structured questionnaires, and in-depth interviews with rural and urban dwellers. Secondary sources included texts, articles, and newspapers to complement data from primary sources. The finding shows that the Oranyan festival plays a critical role in the affirmation of African pantheon and preserving Yorùbá antiquities in the 21st century. The paper concludes that the continued practice and celebration of the festival are essential for preserving Yorùbá antiquities and promoting a sense of identity and cultural heritage
The Culture Specific Application of Sound in Nigerian Video Movies
Nigerian video movies an important urban popular culture, have in recent times become a major object of attraction in terms of artistry, patronage and socio-economic values. The success of this industry could not have been complete without the inputs from scriptwriters, actors, film makers sound engineers and the musicians, who supply the needed music. This paper critically examines the use of sound( both musical and non musical) in Nigeria's video based movie industry, with a view to identifying its nature and functionality vis-à-vis the culture milieu. The need for relevant music led to the rise of video movie music composers like Tope Alabi and Shola Allison. The culture specific character of sound in the movies generally include background score, dialogue, songs, noise, sound expressing emotion and silence. However, there is still need to improve the sound quality of the movies by employing veritable sound designers.

Modelling the neonatal system: A joint analysis of length of stay and patient pathways
In the United Kingdom, one in seven babies require specialist neonatal care after birth, with a noticeable increase in demand. Coupled with budgeting constraints and lack of investment means that neonatal units are struggling. This will inevitably have an impact on baby's length of stay (LoS) and the performance of the service. Models have previously been developed to capture individual babies' pathways to investigate the longitudinal cycle of care. However, no models have been developed to examine the joint analysis of LoS and babies' pathways. LoS at each stage of care is a critical driver of both the clinical outcomes and economic performance of the neonatal system. Using the generalized linear mixed modelling approach, extended to accommodate multiple outcomes, the association between neonate's pathway to discharge and LoS is examined. Using the data about 1002 neonates, we noticed that there is a high positive association between baby's pathway and total LoS, suggesting that discharge policies needs to be looked at more carefully. A novel statistical approach that examined the association of key outcomes and how it evolved over time is developed. Its applicability can be extended to other types of long-term care or diseases, such as heart failure and stroke
The exponentiated generalized Pareto distribution
Recently Gupta et al. (1998) introduced the exponentiated exponential distribution as a generalization of the standard exponential distribution. In this paper, we introduce a three-parameter generalized Pareto distribution, the exponentiated generalized Pareto distribution (EGP). We present a comprehensive treatment of the mathematical properties of this new distribution.
Key Words: Three-parameter generalized Pareto distribution, moments, hazard rate function.

Changing Minds: Towards Water-Based Architecture and Public Space for the Future Urban Archipelago
This blog contribution supports the Urban Archipelago expo at Nieuwe Instituut (NI) in Rotterdam, designed to consist of four elements: a map, a view, a model, and a series of films that depicted a future of living with water, as well as a booklet that documented student work. The expo has been part of the Water Cities Rotterdam, which opened with the work of Kunlé Adeyemi (NLÉ) on 13 May 2023.History, Form & AestheticsUrban Desig
