The coral engine: The way for local communities to sustainably produce corals for Reef Rehabilitation at a large scale

    No full text
Traditionally, marine infrastructure development is regarded to have a negative impact on the ecosystem in or near which it occurs. As a consequence, a whole industry has been treated as a threat and the ingenuity of companies in this industry was forced to focus on minimizing potential negative impacts. Recent trends are to also consider potential positive spin-offs, by including nature-based components in the designs. In this context, Dutch dredging and marine contractor, Van Oord, launched its Coral Rehabilitation Initiative in 2010. A mobile laboratory, named ReefGuard, was developed, to be operated anywhere in the world for sexual reproduction and rearing corals at a large scale (Van Koningsveld et ah, 2017). ReefGuard is used to initiate 'Coral Engines': large scale nurseries with corals obtained through sexual reproduction as well as from fragmentation. These Coral Engines guarantee the long term and large-scale supply of genetically diverse corals for reef creation and rehabilitation. Having coral 'in stock' furthermore allows reefs to be repaired quickly following harmful events such as hurricanes. The involvement of local stakeholders in its setup and operation foresees in sustainable opportunities for research, education and awareness, and local employment. Since 2010 ReefGuard has been applied in five large scale field applications (Australia 2014, 2015, The Bahamas 2015, 2016, 2017) (Van Koningsveld et al, 2017; Robijns et al, 2018; Schutter et al, 2018) producing thousands of sexual recruits consistently. In 2017 a first Coral Engine was delivered with several tens of thousands newly settled coral recruits, and hundreds of one year old recruits and fragments. This paper explains the concept of the Coral Engine in more detail and shares perspectives for future implementation along marine construction projects across the world. Marine infrastructure projects thus become opportunities for coral reef rehabilitation with essential financial and logistical capacity on site, and often also a legislative requirement for compensation of harmful environmental impact.Hydraulic Structures and Flood Ris

These are the (extended) notes of a talk given by the author at the conference Algebraic Number Theory and Related Topics 2023, held at the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Kyoto University. The author thanks the organizers Masataka Chida, Yoichi Mieda, and Wataru Kai for the wonderful opportunity to speak there. In this survey, we discuss our recent works [BGCLRJ23], [CLJ22] on the Beilinson-Tate conjectures for the Siegel sixfold and the description of Deligne-Beilinson cohomology in terms of tempered currents.1. Nrf2 deficiency influences susceptibility to steroid resistance via HDAC2 reduction

    No full text
Abnormal lung inflammation and oxidant burden are associated with a significant reduction in histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) abundance and steroid resistance. We hypothesized that Nrf2 regulates steroid sensitivity via HDAC2 in response to inflammation in mouse lung. Furthermore, HDAC2 deficiency leads to steroid resistance in attenuating lung inflammatory response, which may be due to oxidant/antioxidant imbalance. Loss of antioxidant transcription factor Nrf2 resulted in decreased HDAC2 level in lung, and increased inflammatory lung response which was not reversed by steroid. Thus, steroid resistance or inability of steroids to control lung inflammatory response is dependent on Nrf2-HDAC2 axis. These findings have implications in steroid resistance, particularly during the conditions of oxidative stress when the lungs are more susceptible to inflammatory response, which is seen in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease

A numerical approach toward the p-adic Beilinson conjecture for elliptic curves over Q

    No full text
Restricting ourselves to elliptic curves over Q, we reformulate the p-adic Beilinson conjecture due to Perrin-Riou, which is customized to our computational approach. We then develop a new algorithm for numerical verifications of the p-adic Beilinson conjecture, which is based on the theory of rigid cohomology and F-isocrystals

The multitasking framework: the effects of increasing workload on acute psychobiological stress reactivity

    No full text
A variety of techniques exist for eliciting acute psychological stress in the laboratory; however, they vary in terms of their ease of use, reliability to elicit consistent responses and the extent to which they represent the stressors encountered in everyday life. There is, therefore, a need to develop simple laboratory techniques that reliably elicit psychobiological stress reactivity that are representative of the types of stressors encountered in everyday life. The multitasking framework is a performance-based, cognitively demanding stressor, representative of environments where individuals are required to attend and respond to several different stimuli simultaneously with varying levels of workload. Psychological (mood and perceived workload) and physiological (heart rate and blood pressure) stress reactivity was observed in response to a 15-min period of multitasking at different levels of workload intensity in a sample of 20 healthy participants. Multitasking stress elicited increases in heart rate and blood pressure, and increased workload intensity elicited dose–response increases in levels of perceived workload and mood. As individuals rarely attend to single tasks in real life, the multitasking framework provides an alternative technique for modelling acute stress and workload in the laboratory

Proposta de plano de marketing para os serviços de acolhimento a visitantes na igreja de Frei Galvão e Guaratinguetá (SP)

This work contains a preliminary marketing plan for host services on Frei Galvão’s Church in Guaratinguetá, SP, Brazil. It started from the analysis of the current situation and of a study on visitors’ profiles. The development of the marketing plan proposal used the methodology of the 7 P’s of service marketing. The studies brought some relevant results, as they have indicated a lack of restaurants, adequate signalization, restrooms and a good parking lot. The studies have also shown that the host services managers lack data about number of visitors and about the distribution of pills.
