How Space is Told: Linking Trajectory, Narrative, and Intent in Augmented Reality Storytelling for Cultural Heritage Sites

    No full text
We report on a qualitative study in which 22 participants created Augmented Reality (AR) stories for outdoor cultural heritage sites. As storytelling is a crucial strategy for AR content aimed at providing meaningful experiences, the emphasis has been on what storytelling does, rather than how it is done, the end user's needs prioritized over the author's. To address this imbalance, we identify how recurring patterns in the spatial trajectories and narrative compositions of AR stories for cultural heritage sites are linked to the author's intent and creative process: While authors tend to bind story arcs tightly to confined trajectories for narrative delivery, the need for spatial exploration results in thematic content mapped loosely onto encompassing trajectories. Based on our analysis, we present design recommendations for site-specific AR storytelling tools that can support authors in delivering their intent while leveraging the placeness of cultural heritage sites as a creative resource

Narrative design for Rediscovering Daereungwon: A location-based augmented reality game

    No full text
Rediscovering Daereungwon is a location-based Augmented Reality(AR) mobile game application that aims to enrich the experience of navigating Daereungwon, a Korean cultural heritage site consisting of various royal tombs from the Silla dynasty. In this paper, a framework binding 3 main PoIs with distinctive features into a successive, cohesive, and immersive narrative is introduced. It appropriates and combines the Memorable Experience Design(MED) Framework and the Interest Curve proposed by Bulencea and Egger (2015) to guide tourists through Daereungwon, while game challenges and rewards in the form of augmented objects and interactions provide them with information on the PoIs and the site of Daereungwon as a whole

Adjusting Relative Translation Gains According to Space Size in Redirected Walking for Mixed Reality Mutual Space Generation

    No full text
We propose the concept of relative translation gains, a novel Redirected Walking (RDW) method to create a mutual movable space between the Augmented Reality (AR) host's reference space and the Virtual Reality (VR) client's space. Previous RDW methods have focused on maximizing the movable space at the expense of aligning the coordinates between the AR and VR side, and could only be applied to collaborative scenarios involving sequential tasks. Our method solves these problems by adjusting the remote client's walking speed for each axis of a VR space to modify the movable area without coordinate distortion. We estimate the relative translation gain threshold, defined as the extent to which the walking speed can be altered without creating a perceived difference in distance. In order to reflect features of the reference space in generating the mutual space, we then examine how changing its size affects the threshold value. Our study showed that for remote clients connected to the larger reference space, relative translation gains can be increased to utilize a VR space bigger than their real space. Our method can be applied to create optimal mutual spaces for a wider variety of asymmetric Mixed Reality (MR) remote collaboration systems

[영문] This study was designed to identify factors affecting Public Relations(PR) activities in hospitals. Data were collected through a mail survey conducted in March and April of 1995 in Korean hospitals containing 300 beds or more. The results identifying factors affecting PR activities as classified by targets are as follows: First, PR targeting employees was affected by the type of establishment the hospital represented, and the CEO's understanding of PR. PR targeting patients and families was affected by the PR career of the person responsible for PR. PR targeting people in the community was affected by the overall degree of PR planning and evaluation. PR targeting the mass media was affected by the type of establishment the hospital represented, number of beds, and the type of hospital administration, by the existence of a PR department, ratio of PR budget, academic background of the person responsible for PR, PR career priorities, mass media career, and by the degree of PR Planning and evaluation. Secondly, the results of PR activity in the subject hospitals of the study showed that PR targeting patients and families, and people in the community, PR of small regional and small scale hospitals, the CEO's idea of PR, existence and budget for PR departments, area of expertise and skill of the person responsible for PR, and scientific activity for PR planning and evaluation were all inadequate and in need of improvement. Third, to activate most hospitals' PR activities, there needed to be an emphasis on scientific PR activity and the existence of, and budget for, expert persons in the PR department. It was important that hospitals differentiate and segment PR targets and determine the priority order for major targets. Finally, it was most essential that hospital PR maintain a balance between increasing the hospital's profit and social responsibility, Hospitals must pursue profit, but there are some limitations, noted in the fact that, hospitals are suppose to be non-profit institutions. These days, marketing and advertisement have been restricted because of the harmful effects caused by extended emphasis on pursuit of profit. However, in recent years, the validity of this concern has been discussed given the assumption that PR provides people with information about the hospital and health which leads to service improvement through creative competition between hospitals. In the future, a study of these concepts in relation to PR would be helpful. This should study subjects nationwide, including both hospitals and clinics. Factors affecting PR should be studied systematically so that more objective tests and measuring methods can be developed.restrictio

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

CEO Compensation Incentives and Tax Avoidance

This paper investigates whether firms tax avoidance differs depending on the level of CEO compensation incentives. Prior literature shows mixed results for the relationship between CEO incentives and tax avoidance – either positive or negative. The purpose of this paper is to find the reason for this opposite sign, and find the true underlying shape of the relationship. Under low levels of CEO incentives, increasing pay-performance-sensitivity leads to more tax avoidance, leading to lower ETR. However, very high levels of incentives should lead to firms reducing R&D expenditures, one of commonly used tax-favored activities, thereby increasing ETR. This leads to a U-shaped relation between CEO incentives and effective tax rates. In addition, I also document that this U-shaped relation is stronger for firms under weak corporate governance.Maste

Evaluation of Knowledge Sharing ODA: An Evaluation Framework Utilizing Policy Formulation Theory and Empirical Analysis Results of KSP Projects

As knowledge sharing ODA (such as the Knowledge Sharing Program (KSP) initiated by the Korean government in 2004) has been gaining strategic importance in the field of international development, the systematic evaluation of such projects is also being emphasized. Nevertheless, it is difficult to apply traditional evaluation methods to knowledge sharing ODA due to unique characteristics that are different from other ODA programs. For this reason, the development of a customized evaluation framework is necessary in order to evaluate the policy effectiveness of the knowledge sharing activities adequately. This paper introduces the development of an evaluation framework for knowledge sharing ODA programs utilizing policy formulation theory, theory-based evaluation methods, and the results of empirical analysis of KSP data. The evaluation framework is then applied to evaluate the KSP projects for Agro-Processing Development in Cambodia, from which a thorough analysis of project outcomes and restraints based on the structured evaluation frame and standards was possible

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
