Report on shape analysis and matching and on semantic matching
In GRAVITATE, two disparate specialities will come together in one working platform for the archaeologist: the fields of shape analysis, and of metadata search. These fields are relatively disjoint at the moment, and the research and development challenge of GRAVITATE is precisely to merge them for our chosen tasks. As shown in chapter 7 the small amount of literature that already attempts join 3D geometry and semantics is not related to the cultural heritage domain. Therefore, after the project is done, there should be a clear ‘before-GRAVITATE’ and ‘after-GRAVITATE’ split in how these two aspects of a cultural heritage artefact are treated.This state of the art report (SOTA) is ‘before-GRAVITATE’. Shape analysis and metadata description are described separately, as currently in the literature and we end the report with common recommendations in chapter 8 on possible or plausible cross-connections that suggest themselves. These considerations will be refined for the Roadmap for Research deliverable.Within the project, a jargon is developing in which ‘geometry’ stands for the physical properties of an artefact (not only its shape, but also its colour and material) and ‘metadata’ is used as a general shorthand for the semantic description of the provenance, location, ownership, classification, use etc. of the artefact. As we proceed in the project, we will find a need to refine those broad divisions, and find intermediate classes (such as a semantic description of certain colour patterns), but for now the terminology is convenient – not least because it highlights the interesting area where both aspects meet.On the ‘geometry’ side, the GRAVITATE partners are UVA, Technion, CNR/IMATI; on the metadata side, IT Innovation, British Museum and Cyprus Institute; the latter two of course also playing the role of internal users, and representatives of the Cultural Heritage (CH) data and target user’s group. CNR/IMATI’s experience in shape analysis and similarity will be an important bridge between the two worlds for geometry and metadata. The authorship and styles of this SOTA reflect these specialisms: the first part (chapters 3 and 4) purely by the geometry partners (mostly IMATI and UVA), the second part (chapters 5 and 6) by the metadata partners, especially IT Innovation while the joint overview on 3D geometry and semantics is mainly by IT Innovation and IMATI. Interpreting images of polyhedral objects in the presence of uncertainty
This thesis addresses various problems in computer vision which are related to the interpretation of images of polyhedral objects with a special emphasis on the effects of uncertainty. Its contributions span three areas: we first present an approach to the recovery of 3D shape from a single image using line-drawing analysis and complex reflectance models. The algorithm deals explicitly with uncertainty in vertex position. We then propose an algorithm for computing the finite-resolution aspect graph of polyhedral objects. For each region of the aspect graph a representative finite-resolution aspect is computed. Neighboring regions with identical finite-resolution aspects are merged producing the finite-resolution aspect graph. Finally, we develop a probabilistic approach to object recognition. Match hypotheses are ranked by the probability that they are correct. For each hypothesis the pose of the object is recovered and the region of the pose space compatible with the image uncertainty is computed. Hypotheses which match different features of the same model reinforce each other when the corresponding uncertainty regions in the pose space have a non-empty intersection. Sets of consistent hypotheses are ranked by probability that they are the correct interpretation of the features, producing an ordering of the possible interpretations. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Lookahead selective sampling for incomplete data
Missing values in data are common in real world applications. There are several methods that deal with this problem. In this paper we present lookahead selective sampling (LSS) algorithms for datasets with missing values. We developed two versions of selective sampling. The first one integrates a distance function that can measure the similarity between pairs of incomplete points within the framework of the LSS algorithm. The second algorithm uses ensemble clustering in order to represent the data in a cluster matrix without missing values and then run the LSS algorithm based on the ensemble clustering instance space (LSS-EC). To construct the cluster matrix, we use the k-means and mean shift clustering algorithms especially modified to deal with incomplete datasets. We tested our algorithms on six standard numerical datasets from different fields. On these datasets we simulated missing values and compared the performance of the LSS and LSS-EC algorithms for incomplete data to two other basic methods. Our experiments show that the suggested selective sampling algorithms outperform the other methods
