Continuity and Change: A study of Shia Islam and modernisation in Iran
This study examines the processes of continuity and change in modern Iran, covering the period before and after the 1979 revolution, analysing the changing character of Shia Islam historically to explain Shia thinkers' perception of and response to the modern world. In making this assessment, elements of the history of Shia Islam are examined. This is to illustrate its relationship with modernity, not as a historical treatment of Islam. In explaining its relationship to modernity, this study
identifies the nature of the development of the Iranian political economy - from pre-capitalism to modern capitalism - as having taken an uneven form. This unevenness is largely a consequence of the incorporation of the old mode of production into modern capitalism. The key area in this process has been the modern oil industry and its relation to the state - which emerged as a rentier state (a state which receives a huge amount of income without the need to impose high taxation), and continues to play a vital role in Iran's political economy.
The uneven development is reflected in social and cultural areas, where there has not been uniformity in the integration to the world economy; rather the
adaptation to new developments has been uneven. Shia Islam as an ideology has not been immune from this process: the original ideas and beliefs may be presented anew but the core survives, in the Koran, Hadith (sayings of Prophet) and traditions. Religious leaders have had to concern themselves with the transformation occurring within the community, whether at local or global level. The role of Shia thinkers becomes vital in explaining major transformation in their perceptions, promoting an
understanding of modern institutions such as the nation, state and constitution. The establishment of the Islamic Republic in 1979 showed elements of both continuity and discontinuity in the perception of Shia thinkers and these are examined, in particular, concerning the role of the state and the oil industry. This continued to play a vital role after the revolution, as the state still had to obey the dictates of the world market, for the export of its oil and import, not only of necessary raw materials and capital goods for the operation of the nationalised industries, but also to provide the supply of arms required to fight its war with Iraq. Forced by these economic and political constraints, Shia thinkers' perceptions relating to modernisation continues to present itself in diverse forms

The Shi'a Muslims of the United Provinces of India, c 1890-1940
This dissertation examines religious, social and political change among the Shia
Muslims of the United Provinces of colonial India, c. 1890-1940. Focusing especially,
upon the towns of Lucknow and Amroha but discussing the region as a whole, it traces
the formation of a community identity among Shia Muslims, and questions how
disparate Shi'a populations were able to construct a consciousness of solidarity. The
dissertation is based on a combination of archival and printed sources in English and
Urdu.
The first chapter assesses processes of sectarian organisation and the formation of a
number of Shia institutions and societies in Lucknow in the thirty year period from
1890, including several madrasas and the All India Shi'a Conference. The second chapter
examines manifestations of religious renewal among Indian Shi'as. Forms of religious
proselytisation are discussed, particularly the contribution of the printing press and the
changing role of preaching. The development of religious conflict is outlined, through
examinations of religious debates and the reformation of Muharram rites.
A third chapter examines Shia responses to the so-called '`Aligarh movement',
considering reactions to educational reform and the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental
College at `Aligarh. A fourth chapter discusses Shia responses to the campaigns of jihad
and pan-Islamism current among many Muslims in the early twentieth century. Together,
these two chapters demonstrate the expansion and politicisation of sectarian differences,
and the attempts by some Shi'as to organise separately from wider Muslim institutions.
The final chapter assesses a series of Shi'a-Sunni conflicts in Lucknow in the 1930s. It
examines some of the contributory factors and discusses the conflicts in the light of the
processes of sectarian organisation discussed in earlier chapters. The conclusion
evaluates the implications of the thesis for our understanding of Indian Shia Muslims
and, more generally, of sectarian identities and conflicts in Indian Islam
THE SHIA ARMED GROUPS AND THE FUTURE OF IRAQ
In this article, we try to identify the impact of the Shia militias in Iraq on the future of this
country. We maintain that these armed groups will be a destabilising factor for Iraq and its
neighbours, and they will worsen and deepen the sectarian division in the Middle East. We
assess these different groups from different perspectives, for example, using the Weberian
theory that the state is the only entity that has a monopoly of violence, Ariel Ahram’s
model of state-sponsored and government-sponsored militias, and finally the devolution of
violence to these armed groups

Sunni literary responses to the spread of Shia ideology in Northern Nigeria
The infiltration of Shiism and subsequent increasing growth of the Shia community in Sunni dominated northern Nigeria, especially from the 1980s to date (2015), have generated ideological tension and anxiety. The introduction of the Shia into northern Nigeria has challenged Sunni ideological dominance and ascendancy. The Shia ulama (scholars) clandestinely converted thousands of Sunnis into the new religious group. The Sunni ulama responded to the penetration and emerging Shia community through a myriad of ways in order to arrest what they perceive as a diffusion of antithetical ideology. The responses came in the form of public condemnation, invective songs, theological debates, and literary antiphon. The main thrust of all of these responses is the condemnation of Shia ideology, rituals and practices, especially the ones that oppose Sunni ideological beliefs. One of the major consequences of these responses is the emergence of literature in different languages, namely: Arabic, English and Hausa. However, there is an apparent lack of academic attention to this body of literature in spite of its relevance to understanding Sunni-Shia relations and theological contestations in northern Nigeria. This paper analyses some selected Hausa and English Sunni-reactive literature and assesses its attempt to challenge the spread of Shia ideology in northern Nigeria
Nowe spojrzenie na planowanie architektury mieszkaniowej w afryce subsaharyjskiej
The author shares his reflections on state of art in housing and urban planning, deficiencies, expectations and possibilities in the Sahel region of Africa. He notices, that the housing problem in Africa is one of the challenges, which should be solved in order to recover life dignity of African people and secure their rights to traditional family life in acceptable conditions. The paper describes the studies on the typical dispersed urban structures and the need to foster this type of settlement structure and proposals of introduction of new on light steel frame housing system in the area of Sahel, combining the traditional way of building houses with modern technology. The particularly analysed case, is the housing problem in the Republic of Chad. The author presents the basic discussion on this topic and his architectural proposals. Unfortunately, the gap between the needs and the financial feasibility of housing construction in this area, makes this project already at the starting point extremely difficult to be realized without external subventions.

The subject of the study was the principles of land estimation used for the purpose of consolidation
proceedings, as they are applied in Poland.
The work examines the legal conditions relating to the estimation of land for the purposes of
consolidation. Documents prepared in the years 2005–2017 concerning land estimation (resolutions
of the consolidation participants, and protocols from the value estimates) have been
collected for 41 consolidated sites, located in 28 districts of 11 voivodships (regions). A survey
was conducted among the surveyors-designers of the consolidation proceedings, consisting of
19 questions. In the current year, the co-author of the present article was present at meetings of
consolidation proceedings’ participants, convened in order to determine the rules for estimating
land value on two sites located in different regions, and the material she collected during those
meetings was used in the article.
The collected data were subjected to an analysis, which showed that within Poland there is no
homogeneity in the method of estimating land value for the purpose of consolidation proceedings,
and that the method used to determine the value of land, taking into account the 1-hectare
estimated rate, and the price of 1dt of rye grain, according to the provisions of the agricultural
tax, is incompatible with the principles for the valuation of agricultural real estate, as specified in
the law on real estate management.
