Enhancement of Hc2 and Jc by carbon-based chemical doping
In the past 5 years, various kinds of doping of MgB2, including single elements (metal and non-metal), silicates, various carbon sources, and other compounds have been investigated and reported. Most nanoparticle doping leads to improvement of critical current density, Jc(H), and performance, but some types show a negative effect. In this paper, the effect of carbon doping on Jc and the upper critical field, Hc2, of MgB2 is reviewed. Carbon substitution effects make two distinguishable contributions to the enhancement of Jc field performance: increase of Hc2 and improvement of flux pinning, both because carbon substitutes for boron in the MgB2 lattice. Among all the carbon sources so far, nano-SiC has been confirmed to be the most effective dopant to enhance the Jc in magnetic fields and Hc2. An irreversibility field, Hirr, of 10 T has been achieved with nano-SiC doping at 20 K, exceeding Hirr of NbTi at 4.2 K. Besides that, Hc2 of carbon alloyed MgB2 film has reached the value of 71 T. The significant enhancement in Jc(H) and Hc2 via carbon substitution has provided great potential for practical applications of MgB2. The dual reaction model proposed by the authors group provides a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism of enhancement in Jc and Hc2 by chemical doping. Further improvement in self-field Jc performance while maintaining the already achieved in-field performance remains as a major challenge in the development of MgB2
Effect of sample size on magnetic Jc for MgB2 superconductor
A strong effect of sample size on magnetic Jc(H) was observed for bulk MgB2 when Jc is obtained directly from the critical state model. Thus obtained zero-field Jc (Jc0) decreases strongly with the sample size, attaining a constant value for the samples larger than a few millimetres. On the other hand, the irreversibility field (Hirr) defined at Jc = 100 A/cm2 increases with the sample size. The decrease of Jc0 is described in terms of voids in the bulk MgB2 samples and superconducting screening around the cells of superconducting material between these voids (35 micro-m), because of concentration of the current in the narrow bridges connecting the cells. For samples larger than a few millimetres, the value of magnetic Jc is in agreement with the transport Jc and it is restricted by the voids. The critical state model is not suitable for obtaining Jc for small bulk MgB2. The increase of Hirr with the sample size is an artefact of defining Hirr by the value of Jc at which an additional superconducting screening on 1 micro-m scale dominates Delta(m)

Enhancement of the low-field Jc properties of MgB2/Fe tapes by a modified in situ process
The low-field Jc properties of MgB2/Fe tapes were significantly improved by a modified in situ process. The as-drawn MgB2/Fe wires were first pre-annealed to form MgB2, before they were further rolled into flat tapes and post-annealed. In comparison to the conventional in situ process, our modified process produced dense, homogeneous and well-connected MgB2 cores in the final tapes, which resulted in a significant improvement in the low-field Jc properties. This modified in situ process is very promising for the fabrication of long-length MgB2 tapes/wires with excellent Jc properties for low-field applications, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) magnets
Amenable L-2-Theoretic Methods and Knot Concordance
We reveal new structures in the topological knot concordance group. As a key ingredient, we develop obstructions using L-2-theoretic methods for amenable groups in Strebel's class recently introduced by Orr and the author. Concerning (h)-solvable knots, which are defined in terms of certain Whitney towers of height h in bounding 4-manifolds, we show the following: for any n>1, there are (n)-solvable but non-(n. 5)-solvable (and therefore nonslice) knots, which are not detected by prior methods using Cochran-Orr-Teichner L-2-signature obstructions as well as Levine algebraic obstructions and Casson-Gordon invariants.X1197sciescopu
Dynamics of Network Formation Processes in the Co-Author Model
This article studies the dynamics in the formation processes of a mutual consent network in game theory setting: the Co-Author Model. In this article, a limited observation is applied and analytical results are derived. Then, 2 parameters are varied: the number of individuals in the network and the initial probability of the links in the network in its initial state. A simulation result shows a finding that is consistent with an analytical result for a state of equilibrium while it also shows different possible equilibria.Dynamics, Network, Game Theory, Model,Simulation, Equilibrium, Complexity
Improvement of Jc and Hc2 in MgB2 superconductor with citric acid addition
This paper reports on the fabrication and characterization of citric acid (CA)-C6H8O7 added MgB2 superconductor. The relationships between microstructures, critical current density (Jc), critical temperature (Tc), upper critical field (Hc2), irreversibility field (Hirr), and normal state resistivity for 10 wt% C6H8O7 added MgB2 samples sintered at temperatures from 650C to 950C were systematically studied. A reduction in Tc and in lattice parameter a due to the C substitution and possible oxygen (O) effects occurs wtih C6H8O7 addition. Jc, Hc2, and Hirr are significantly enhanced, however, with the addition of C6H8O7. All the samples exhibit Jc above 104 A/cm2 at 5 K and 8 T. This value is higher than for the un-doped MgB2 by a factor of 9. The significant improvement in the superconducting properties is attributed to the lattice distortion due to the C and possible oxygen (O) substitution for boron, with the C and O coming from the decomposition of C6H8O7.

Engineering Framework to Utilize Miniaturized Charpy Type SE(B) Specimens to Predict Jc of Full Sized Specimens
AbstractThis paper introduces our experience of using miniature Charpy type SE(B) specimen in obtaining fracture toughness Jc of a material in the ductile to brittle transition temperature (DBTT) region. Width W x thickness B of 2 x 2 mm, 3 x 3 mm and 10 x 10 mm were chosen as miniature specimens and 25 x 25 mm were chosen as full sized specimen. 0.55% carbon steel JIS S55C, whose tensile to yield stress ratio σTS/σYS was equal to 1.8 was chosen as a material to simulate a degraded (embrittled) material in the DBTT region. Focus was placed on whether cleavage fracture could be predicted for these miniaturized specimens. Another focus was placed on whether the Jc of full sized specimen is predictable from the test results of the miniature sized specimens, in case cleavage fracture were observed. The results showed that the modified Ritch-Knott-Rice (RKR) failure criterion (which predicts the onset of cleavage fracture when the crack opening stress measured at 4 times the crack-tip opening displacement exceeds this σ22c) could predict whether cleavage fracture would occur or not. Another finding was that, in case cleavage fracture was observed though, the critical value σ22c in the modified RKR failure criterion was independent of specimen size, and thus, Jc of the full sized specimen is predictable from the miniature specimen test results, though M = (W-a)σYS/Jc was smaller than ASTM E1921 requirement of 30. Here, a and σYS are crack length and yield strength, respectively
