The so-called nonquadratic membership-dependent Lyapunov function is first proposed, which is formulated in a higher order form of both the system states and the normalized membership functions than existing techniques in the literature. Then, new membership-dependent stability conditions are developed by the new Lyapunov function approach. It is shown that the conservativeness of the obtained criteria can be further reduced as the degree of the Lyapunov function increases. Two numerical examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness and less conservativeness of the obtained theoretical results.Xudong Zhao, Lixian Zhang, Peng Shi, and Hamid Reza Karim

The Shi arrangement and the Ish arrangement

This paper is about two arrangements of hyperplanes. The first — the Shi arrangement — was introduced by Jian-Yi Shi to describe the Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in the affine Weyl group of type A. The second — the Ish arrangement — was recently defined by the first author who used the two arrangements together to give a new interpretation of the q,t-Catalan numbers of Garsia and Haiman. In the present paper we will define a mysterious "combinatorial symmetry'' between the two arrangements and show that this symmetry preserves a great deal of information. For example, the Shi and Ish arrangements share the same characteristic polynomial, the same numbers of regions, bounded regions, dominant regions, regions with c "ceilings'' and d "degrees of freedom'', etc. Moreover, all of these results hold in the greater generality of "deleted'' Shi and Ish arrangements corresponding to an arbitrary subgraph of the complete graph. Our proofs are based on nice combinatorial labellings of Shi and Ish regions and a new set partition-valued statistic on these regions.

    Stability and Stabilization

    No full text
This chapter is concerned with the stability and stabilization problems of a class of continuous-time and discrete-time Markov jump linear system (MJLS) with partially unknown transition probabilities (TPs). It will be proved that the system under consideration is more general, which covers the systems with completely known and completely unknown TPs as two special cases, the latter is hereby the switching linear systems under arbitrary switching. Moreover, in contrast with the uncertain TPs, the concept of partially unknown TPs proposed in this chapter does not require any knowledge of the unknown elements. Firstly, the sufficient conditions for stochastic stability and stabilization of the underlying systems are derived via linear matrix inequality (LMI) formulation, and the relationship between the stability criteria currently obtained for the usual MJLS and switching linear systems under arbitrary switching is exposed by the proposed class of hybrid systems. Further, the necessary and sufficient criteria are obtained by fully considering the properties of the transition rates matrices (TRMs) and transition probabilities matrices (TPMs), and the convexity of the uncertain domains. We will show by comparison the less conservatism of the methodologies for obtaining the necessary and sufficient conditions, but note that in the next chapters of Part I, we prefer the ones in the sufficient stability conditions to carry out other studies. The extensions to less conservative results are relatively straightforward and we leave them to readers who are interested.Lixian Zhang, Ting Yang, Peng Shi, Yanzheng Zh

Asynchronous Filtering for Discrete-Time Switched T-S Fuzzy Systems

    No full text
In this paper, asynchronous H∞ filtering is studied for discrete-time switched Takagi–Sugeno (T–S) fuzzy systems. New Lyapunov functions are constructed for switched systems with asynchronous switching between subsystems and candidate filters. These improved Lyapunov functions are dependent on the mode of filters instead of subsystems, which are more consistent with the switching mechanism of switched systems with asynchronous switching. Meanwhile, they are quasi-time-dependent, which are effective in achieving more general results than traditional time-independent Lyapunov functions. Based on the new Lyapunov functions, a stability and ℓ2 -gain criterion is deduced for switched T–S fuzzy systems. Then, switched fuzzy filters are designed to guarantee that the filtering error system is globally uniformly asymptotically stable and has a prescribed H∞ performance. At last, an illustrative example is provided to demonstrate the potentials and advantages of the proposed filtering scheme.Shuang Shi, Zhongyang Fei, Peng Shi, Choon Ki Ah
