Volume change characteristics of fine-grained soils due to sequential thermo-mechanical stresses
Know-how of volume change characteristics, VCC, of the fine-grained soils, exposed to thermal stresses, is essential for design of various thermo-active structures. These stresses are known to induce excess pore-water pressure, Δu θ , in the saturated state of such soils, which in turn affects their compression and shear strength characteristics. In this context, through several experimental studies, the effect of thermo-mechanical stress-path, the over-consolidation ratio (OCR) and degree of saturation on VCC (viz., thermally induced volumetric strain, ε vθ , compression and re-compression indices, c c and c r ) of the fine-grained soils has been demonstrated by earlier researchers. However, the response of these soils when exposed to sequential thermal and mechanical stresses, STMS, due to temperature fluctuation and continued infrastructure development, on VCC has seldom been studied. This motivated us to investigate the VCC of the fine-grained soils, by subjecting them to STMS in a suitably modified oedometer setup which facilitates temperature controlled tests. From the results of STMS tests, it is seen that the ε vθ of these soils exposed to thermal cycles (20-60-20 °C) is independent of the thermal stress history experienced at different applied vertical stress, σ v , (= 60, 125, 250 kPa). Furthermore, from the analysis of deformation-time curve of the thermal loading phase, a methodology for direct determination of the volume change component of fine-grained soils, due to structural rearrangement, ΔV sθ , has been proposed. The methodology enables direct computation of the coefficient of volume change due to structural rearrangement, α sθ , that would aid in direct prediction of Δu θ from the deformation-time curve of thermal loading phase
A4NT : Author Attribute Anonymity by Adversarial Training of Neural Machine Translation
Text-based analysis methods enable an adversary to reveal privacy relevant author attributes such as gender, age and can identify the text's author. Such methods can compromise the privacy of an anonymous author even when the author tries to remove privacy sensitive content. In this paper, we propose an automatic method, called the Adversarial Author Attribute Anonymity Neural Translation (), to combat such text-based adversaries. Unlike prior works on obfuscation, we propose a system that is fully automatic and learns to perform obfuscation entirely from the data. This allows us to easily apply the system to obfuscate different author attributes. We propose a sequence-to-sequence language model, inspired by machine translation, and an adversarial training framework to design a system which learns to transform the input text to obfuscate the author attributes without paired data. We also propose and evaluate techniques to impose constraints on our model to preserve the semantics of the input text. learns to make minimal changes to the input to successfully fool author attribute classifiers, while preserving the meaning of the input text. Our experiments on two datasets and three settings show that the proposed method is effective in fooling the attribute classifiers and thus improves the anonymity of authors
Natural language description of images and videos
Understanding visual media, i.e. images and videos, has been a cornerstone topic in computer vision research for a long time. Recently, a new task within the purview of this research area, that of automatically captioning images and videos, has garnered wide-spread interest. The task involves generating a short natural
language description of an image or a video.
This thesis studies the automatic visual captioning problem in its entirety. A baseline visual captioning pipeline is examined, including its two constituent blocks, namely visual feature extraction and language modeling. We then discuss the challenges involved and the methods available to evaluate a visual captioning system. Building on this baseline model, several enhancements are proposed to improve the performance of both the visual feature extraction and the language modeling. Deep convolutional neural network based image features used in the baseline model are augmented with explicit object and scene detection features.
In the case of videos, a combination of action recognition and static frame-level features are used. The long-short term memory network based language model used in the baseline is extended by introduction of an additional input channel and residual connections. Finally, an efficient ensembling technique based on a caption evaluator network is presented.
Results from extensive experiments conducted to evaluate each of the above mentioned enhancements are reported. The image and video captioning architectures proposed in this thesis achieve state-of-the-art performance on the corresponding tasks. To support these claims, results from two video captioning challenges organized over the last year are reported, both of which were won by the models presented in the thesis. We also quantitatively analyze the automatic captions generated and identify several shortcomings of the current system. After having identified the deficiencies, we briefly look at a few interesting problems which could take the automatic visual captioning research forward
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
