This is an audio diary for a major course, Audio Production. Audio Script: docs.google.com/document/d/1my-Xd…/edit?usp=sharing Music: Heya by Mahmoud El Esseily, Anywhere by Rita Ora The #AUCdiaries project is an oral history project that documents the life of the AUC community. The project was initiated by Kim Fox in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (JRMC) along with Hoda Mostafa, Maha Bali and Nadine Aboulmagd, all from the Center for Learning and Teaching (CLT). The bulk of the content that was created for the #AUCdiaries podcasts was completed by students as part of AUC courses. As such, this is both a digital pedagogy project, since students learn while producing, and a digital scholarship project, since the output is considered to be digital scholarship

    Ha in Sheta

The coronation cycle in the Portico of the Birth in the temple of Deir el-Bahari includes a scene of purification of Hatshepsut by a god captioned as Ha in Sheta. This seemingly hapax toponym provides the key to a proper understanding of the highly symbolic meaning of the scene. The place name, composed of basic cosmographical hieroglyphs, has at the same time a spelling that refers to a vast semantic field of the notions of “mystery”, “secret”, “be hidden”, etc. It appears that the purification made by a god of the western desert in a “mysterious” place refers to the initiation of the female pharaoh into the secrets of the sun god, enabling her to fulfill her role as the provider of sustenance for humanity. The role of the god Ha as a protector against hunger, rooted in the Old Kingdom tradition and expressed also in the text of BD 178 in the Offering Chapel of Hatshepsut, is crucial in this respect

A simulator approach to study the effect of spiral curves on driver's behavior for two-lane rural highway

    No full text
Many studies based on spot locations have been conducted to improve highway design consistency to reduce accident rates. Traffic accidents had a strong relationship with environmental sustainability in terms of emissions and natural resources consumption. This study based on driving a simulator can produce continuous drivers' behavior profiles to facilitate analyzing the behavior on various curves' scenarios (with/without spiral). This paper studied the effect of the spiral transition curves on drivers' behaviors in terms of speed and lateral position with changing geometric features of horizontal curves at the two-lane rural highway. Seventy-two participants were selected to ride on 48 different curves. Curves of experimental track had 4 radii, 3 deflection angles, 2 directions and with/without spiral. Drivers' speed behavior studied at five specific locations at every curve, and 3 segments at studying the lateral position. Effect of spiral studied according to 3 approaches; changing radius, deflection angle, and direction of the curve. Briefly, spiral had significant in small radii curves and sharp deflection angles by increasing the average speed at curves and reduced tangent-to-curve speed reduction. Also, spiral decreased the lateral displacement at approach tangent and during the curv

Cause and control of cracking in reinforced concrete highway bridge deck: a case study in bonga town, sheta river bridge deck

    No full text
Cracking in concrete bridge deck is widely regarded as a long–term durability and maintenance problem that requires attention. Once a crack has developed in a bridge deck create a path for water and de-icing salts to reach the steel, often leading to corrosion of the reinforcement, greatly reducing the service life of the bridge deck. The focus of this study was to investigate the causes of cracking in reinforced concrete highway bridge deck related to transverse deck cracking. This study selected a single– span RC deck girder bridge crossing Sheta River with a service life of 50 years, located at Kaffa Zone, Bonga town. The study used both primary and secondary data. The primary data was collected from in place non–destructive tests in conjunction with completing visual bridge inspection formats. The secondary data was collected from ERA previous inspection & inventory reports and data on similarly constructed RC deck girder bridge (Bitino River Bridge). ACI 209R–92 model and ASHTO–2011 second edition manual for bridge evaluation were used to analyze the collected data to measure predicted compressive strength at any time and performance evaluation of Sheta River Bridge deck, respectively. The study finding revealed that the major causes of Sheta River Bridge deck cracking are environment & site conditions, materials properties, structural design parameters, excessive traffic overloading and age of the bridge. The finding of this study also shows that the structural conditions of the bridge are at reasonably good condition and almost all manifested cracking in Sheta River Bridge deck are non-structural cracks. Therefore, the researcher recommends that concerned body shall use gravity filling crack repair mechanism with association of lower viscosity gravity feed product and strengthen a girder of the bridge solutions in order to prolonging the span life of Sheta River Bridge deck

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Procedural sedation analgesia

    No full text
The number of noninvasive and minimally invasive procedures performed outside of the operating room has grown exponentially over the last several decades. Sedation, analgesia, or both may be needed for many of these interventional or diagnostic procedures. Individualized care is important when determining if a patient requires procedural sedation analgesia (PSA). The patient might need an anti-anxiety drug, pain medicine, immobilization, simple reassurance, or a combination of these interventions. The goals of PSA in four different multidisciplinary practices namely; emergency, dentistry, radiology and gastrointestinal endoscopy are discussed in this review article. Some procedures are painful, others painless. Therefore, goals of PSA vary widely. Sedation management can range from minimal sedation, to the extent of minimal anesthesia. Procedural sedation in emergency department (ED) usually requires combinations of multiple agents to reach desired effects of analgesia plus anxiolysis. However, in dental practice, moderate sedation analgesia (known to the dentists as conscious sedation) is usually what is required. It is usually most effective with the combined use of local anesthesia. The mainstay of success for painless imaging is absolute immobility. Immobility can be achieved by deep sedation or minimal anesthesia. On the other hand, moderate sedation, deep sedation, minimal anesthesia and conventional general anesthesia can be all utilized for management of gastrointestinal endoscopy
