Satellite Communications [Editorial]
YesWe are delighted to bring to you this special issue on satellite
communications, which we have prepared as part of the
spreading of excellence remit of the satellite communications
network of excellence (SatNEx). The SatNEx project,
which began in 2004, is funded for five years under the European
Union¿s Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) Information
Society Technologies (IST) Thematic Area. Led by the
German Aerospace Center, SatNEx brings together a network
of 24 partners, distributed throughout Europe, with membership
drawn from ten countries.
The philosophy underlying the SatNEx approach revolves
around the selection of focused actions under Joint
Programmes of Activities, which are carried out collectively
by the partners and include research, integration, and dissemination
activities. Training represents an important part
of the SatNEx remit and is supported through a number of
initiatives including the hosting of internship projects and an
annual summer school.
The call for papers resulted in a high number of submissions,
from which we have been able to select 12 excellent
papers dealing with the different aspects of satellite communications

Heterogeneous Networking for Beyond 3G system in a High-Speed Train Environment. Investigation of handover procedures in a high-speed train environment and adoption of a pattern classification neural-networks approach for handover management
Based on the targets outlined by the EU Horizon 2020 (H2020) framework, it is expected that heterogeneous networking will play a crucial role in delivering seamless end-to-end ubiquitous Internet access for users. In due course, the current GSM-Railway (GSM-R) will be deemed unsustainable, as the demand for packet-oriented services continues to increase. Therefore, the opportunity to identify a plausible replacement system conducted in this research study is timely and appropriate.
In this research study, a hybrid satellite and terrestrial network for enabling ubiquitous Internet access in a high-speed train environment is investigated. The study focuses on the mobility management aspect of the system, primarily related to the handover management. A proposed handover strategy, employing the RACE II MONET and ITU-T Q.65 design methodology, will be addressed. This includes identifying the functional model (FM) which is then mapped to the functional architecture (FUA), based on the Q.1711 IMT-2000 FM. In addition, the signalling protocols, information flows and message format based on the adopted design methodology will also be specified. The approach is then simulated in OPNET and the findings are then presented and discussed.
The opportunity of exploring the prospect of employing neural networks (NN) for handover is also undertaken. This study focuses specifically on the use of pattern classification neural networks to aid in the handover process, which is then simulated in MATLAB. The simulation outcomes demonstrated the effectiveness and appropriateness of the NN algorithm and the competence of the algorithm in facilitating the handover process
Application of Artificial Neural Network in Agriculture
With the need for farming to become more efficient and environmentally sustainable to meet the demands of a growing global population, the application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to inform and enhance agricultural practice and production is gathering momentum and interest. This Reprint titled "Application of Artificial Neural Network in Agriculture" showcases fourteen high-quality research articles highlighting the use of ANNs and related technologies for pest detection, plant disease detection, nutritional monitoring and prediction, the classification of the phenology of beans, and the optimisation of egg production. We also present how ANNs may be used for predicting the power requirements of agricultural machinery and for dynamic behaviour forecasting of an indirect solar dryer. The multidisciplinary nature of the articles presented will likely strongly appeal to researchers and scientists working in the areas of agricultural technology, communications engineering, computer science, data analytics, electronic engineering, information technology, image processing, and mathematical modelling
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Fast and Accurate Image Feature Detection for On-The-Go Field Monitoring Through Precision Agriculture. Computer Predictive Modelling for Farm Image Detection and Classification with Convolution Neural Network (CNN)
This study aimed to develop a novel end-to-end plant diagnosis model for the
analysis of plant health conditions in near real-time to optimize the rate of
production on farmlands for an intensive, yet environmentally safe farming
production to preserve the natural environment.
First, field research was conducted to determine the extent of the problems
faced by farmers in agricultural production. This allowed us to refine the
research statement and the level of technology involved in the production
processes. The advantages of unmanned aerial systems were exploited in the
continuous monitoring of farm plantations to develop automated and accurate
measures of farm conditions.
To this end, this thesis applies the Precision Agricultural technology as a data based management system that takes into account spatial variations by using
the Global Positioning System, Geographical Information System, remote
sensing, yield monitors, mapping, and guidance system for variable rate
applications.
An unmanned aerial vehicle embedded with an optic and radiometric sensor
was used to obtain high spectral resolution images of plantation status during
normal production/growth cycle. Then, an ensemble of classifiers with Convolution Neural Networks (CNN) was used as off the shelf feature extractor
to train images to develop an end-to-end feature detection and multiclass
classification system for plant overall health’s conditions. Whereby previous
works have concentrated on using CNN as off the shelf feature extractor and
model training to detect only plant diseases from plants.
To date, no research has yet been carried out to develop an end-to-end model
for the overall plant diagnosis system. Previous studies focused on the
detection of diseases at any given time, making it difficult to implement
comprehensive real-time PA systems.
Applying the pretrained model to the new images showed that the model can
accurately predict any plant condition with an average of 97% accuracy
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
