No full textThe carbonated functional soft drinks are a new concept that provides health benefits for the consumers. The aim of this study was to improve the antioxidant activity of a carbonated lemon soft drink, while preserving its characteristic flavour, by blending the lemon oil (L) with oregano (Or) essential oil. The effect of different thickeners, usually used in formulation of the soft drinks, on release of the volatile compounds from simple model solutions was evaluated, separately. Blending lemon oil with oregano essential oil (1.5 µL Or /100 µL) improved the odour acceptability and increased the DPPH scavenging ability of lemon oil by 40%. Studying the effect of different thickeners indicated that the xanthan, Arabic gum and pectin at levels 0.05, 6.0 and 0.01 g/100 mL water, respectively, showed the highest release of limonene and citral, the most contributors to lemon aroma, from the simple model solutions. This finding was mainly correlated to the interaction between the thickeners. In view of this result a lemon soft drink was formulated. Carbonation of the soft drink improved the sensory characteristics, decreased the pH value, increased the acidity and showed insignificant changes (P > 0.05) in total soluble solids and total sugars
Preparation and evaluation of a functional effervescent powder based on inclusion complexes of orange oil and <i>β</i>-cyclodextrin derivatives
No full textFlavoured functional effervescent powders are becoming increasingly popular by consumers due to their health benefits and easy dissolution. In present study, orange flavoured effervescent powders having functional properties were prepared. Orange oil (O) was blended with different essential oils (EOs) that have high antioxidant activity. The orange oil and the O-EOs blends were subjected to odour sensory evaluation, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis and evaluation of radical scavenging activity. Combinations of two water soluble β-cyclodextrin polymers, 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (2-HP-β-CD) and epichlorohydrin-β-cyclodextrin (EPI-β-CD), were prepared at different molar ratios (3:1 and 1:3, F1 and F2, respectively). The O-EOs blends that showed the highest antioxidant activities and best odour qualities were encapsulated with F1 and F2, separately. The orange flavoured inclusion complexes were prepared by freeze drying method. The particle sizes of the inclusion complex powders were in the nanoscale. Characterization of the inclusion complexes nanoparticles was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and fourier transform infrared microscopy (FT-IR). The results confirmed the successful formation of the inclusion complexes. However, inclusion complex of O-EOs (300 mg) blend with F1 (OF1cIC) showed the smallest particle size (113.90±15.90 nm), the more negative zeta potential (−27.10±1.27 mV), the highest encapsulation efficiency (95.51%) and best odour quality. Therefore, it was mixed with an effervescent powder having high acceptable characteristics. The orange flavoured effervescent powder showed superior flowability.</p

The social and ritual contextualisation of Ancient Egyptian hair and hairstyles from the Protodynastic to the end of the Old Kingdom
No full textHair, the most malleable part of the human body, lends itself to the most varied forms of
impermanent modifications. The resulting hairstyles convey social practices and norms,
and may be regarded as part of the “representation of self” and an integral element in
the maintenance and structuring of society. In this thesis, a systematic and quantative
investigation has been undertaken of the structural relationships between variations in
hairstyles and principal changes in social organisation in ancient Egypt from the
Protodynastic to the end of the Old Kingdom (3,350-2,181 BC), a period that witnessed
the rise, consolidation and eventually breakdown of centralised authority.
The results reveal that hairstyles were linked to the identity of individuals and
social groups, such as men, women, children and the elderly. Hairstyles were used as a
means of displaying status. After experimentation with a broad spectrum of hairstyles
during the Protodynastic and early Dynasty I, an institutionalised canon for hairstyles
was established, coinciding with the creation of administrative institutions. These
codified hairstyles continued to serve as the norms for identifying members of the
administration or signs of authority. By the end of the Old Kingdom, the hairstyles of
the elite had been adopted by the lower officials of the increased bureaucracy and
provincial elites as representations of their newly acquired power and status.
Although initially the majority of the men had their hair cut short, modifications
of short hair and the adoption of mid- and shoulder-length hair became progressively
common. The use of certain hairstyles was restricted to the higher social offices, with
longer hair being emblematic of power and divinity. Women, by contrast, initially had
long hair with greater variety occurring by Dynasty I and a more restricted array from
Dynasty II onwards. However, long hair was predominant among women of all social
statuses in all periods. Long hair may have thus been related to the perception of women
as mothers (responsible for childbirth and nursing), and hence their perceived role as
directly linked with procreation and fecundity. Although the adoption of the tripartite by
high officials was related to this ‘generative’ aspect of feminine hairstyles, it was
primarily in imitation of the God Osiris and his regenerative powers
Global variation in anastomosis and end colostomy formation following left-sided colorectal resection
No full text3427sinoneBackground: End colostomy rates following colorectal resection vary across institutions in high-income settings, being influenced by patient, disease, surgeon and system factors. This study aimed to assess global variation in end colostomy rates after left-sided colorectal resection. Methods: This study comprised an analysis of GlobalSurg-1 and-2 international, prospective, observational cohort studies (2014, 2016), including consecutive adult patients undergoing elective or emergency left-sided colorectal resection within discrete 2-week windows. Countries were grouped into high-, middle-and low-income tertiles according to the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI). Factors associated with colostomy formation versus primary anastomosis were explored using a multilevel, multivariable logistic regression model. Results: In total, 1635 patients from 242 hospitals in 57 countries undergoing left-sided colorectal resection were included: 113 (6·9 per cent) from low-HDI, 254 (15·5 per cent) from middle-HDI and 1268 (77·6 percent) from high-HDI countries. There was a higher proportion of patients with perforated disease (57·5, 40·9 and 35·4 per cent; P < 0·001) and subsequent use of end colostomy (52·2, 24·8 and 18·9 per cent; P < 0·001) in low-compared with middle-and high-HDI settings. The association with colostomy use in low-HDI settings persisted (odds ratio (OR) 3·20, 95 per cent c.i. 1·35 to 7·57; P = 0·008) after risk adjustment for malignant disease (OR 2·34, 1·65 to 3·32; P < 0·001), emergency surgery (OR 4·08, 2·73 to 6·10; P < 0·001), time to operation at least 48 h (OR 1·99, 1·28 to 3·09; P = 0·002) and disease perforation (OR 4·00, 2·81 to 5·69; P < 0·001). Global variation in anastomosis and end colostomy formation following left-sided colorectal resection
No full textnone3427noBackground: End colostomy rates following colorectal resection vary across institutions in high-income settings, being influenced by patient, disease, surgeon and system factors. This study aimed to assess global variation in end colostomy rates after left-sided colorectal resection. Methods: This study comprised an analysis of GlobalSurg-1 and-2 international, prospective, observational cohort studies (2014, 2016), including consecutive adult patients undergoing elective or emergency left-sided colorectal resection within discrete 2-week windows. Countries were grouped into high-, middle-and low-income tertiles according to the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI). Factors associated with colostomy formation versus primary anastomosis were explored using a multilevel, multivariable logistic regression model. Results: In total, 1635 patients from 242 hospitals in 57 countries undergoing left-sided colorectal resection were included: 113 (6·9 per cent) from low-HDI, 254 (15·5 per cent) from middle-HDI and 1268 (77·6 percent) from high-HDI countries. There was a higher proportion of patients with perforated disease (57·5, 40·9 and 35·4 per cent; P < 0·001) and subsequent use of end colostomy (52·2, 24·8 and 18·9 per cent; P < 0·001) in low-compared with middle-and high-HDI settings. The association with colostomy use in low-HDI settings persisted (odds ratio (OR) 3·20, 95 per cent c.i. 1·35 to 7·57; P = 0·008) after risk adjustment for malignant disease (OR 2·34, 1·65 to 3·32; P < 0·001), emergency surgery (OR 4·08, 2·73 to 6·10; P < 0·001), time to operation at least 48 h (OR 1·99, 1·28 to 3·09; P = 0·002) and disease perforation (OR 4·00, 2·81 to 5·69; P < 0·001). Conclusion: Global differences existed in the proportion of patients receiving end stomas after left-sided colorectal resection based on income, which went beyond case mix alone.noneGlasbey, James C;
