    Jesus as shepherd in the gospel of Matthew

    The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that Matthew and those who first received and transmitted Matthew's Gospel during the late first century believed that Jesus was the righteous and royal Shepherd-Messiah of Israel, the Son of David. Matthew also believed that Jesus was the true teacher and interpreter of the law who could give definitive leadership and guidance to Israel in the aftermath of the Jewish war. Matthew's Gospel was written sometime during the last quarter of the first century, during the formative period of early Judaism. In this context, Matthew presented Jesus as the defining figure for the future of Israel. Jesus, as the righteous royal shepherd, will provide the authoritative understanding of Judaism and her traditions. Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of David, and fulfils the promises of the Hebrew Scriptures. Therefore, as God's choice, he is the one to be turned to during this time of transition and change. As the Son of God and Messiah, he has been given God’s authority and is personally present with the community to give this guidance. One of the ways the evangelist demonstrates this is in his use of the shepherd metaphor in regard to Jesus. The ancient metaphor of shepherd was an image for leadership in the history of the tradition. The shepherd metaphor was often associated with the spiritual and national leaders in Israel, for example, Moses and David. According to Matthew qualities of this kind of shepherd leadership are now revealed in their fullness in Jesus, the Son of God. Jesus as Shepherd-Messiah is revealed both explicitly and implicitly in Matthew. He is revealed explicitly in the shepherd texts of Matthew and implicitly in the Gospel through the literary and typological correspondences in the history of Israel. The shepherd metaphor has a long history both inside and outside Israel’s tradition. Kings and rulers of many types were referred to as shepherds. In the thesis, the metaphor IS explored in the Ancient Near East generally, the biblical tradition, second Temple Judaism, the Dead Sea Scrolls and Philo. The shepherd metaphor was also used to describe evil, false or abusive rulers and leaders. In Israel's tradition this false shepherd metaphor became especially prominent in the exilic and post-exilic prophets. After the time of the exile, messianic hopes grew. The shepherd metaphor became associated with these messianic expectations. Other relevant texts from Rabbinic Judaism and Greco-Roman sources are also considered. In light of this social and historical background, the intertextual and narrative implications of Matthew's use of the shepherd motif will be investigated in relation to his christological concerns. Finally, the shepherd metaphor as it is applied to 'Jesus as shepherd' is thoroughly examined in regard to the Gospel of Matthew. It is the intention of this thesis therefore to make a contribution concerning Matthew's use of the shepherd metaphor in the wider context of Matthean Christology

    Ethnic identity, political identity and ethnic conflict: simulating the effect of congruence between the two identities on ethnic violence and conflict

    This thesis outlines and presents an alternative hypothetical process to the emergence of ethnic conflict. Ethnic conflicts, rather than being dependent upon pre-existing 'ancient hatreds', are instead the result of a congruence between ethnic and political identity which grants individuals the ability to use ethnicity to identify and eliminate political threats. This hypothesis is formed by the examination of three case studies of ethnic conflict: Lebanon, Northern Ireland and Croatia. This hypothesis is then formalised and tested using an agent based simulation in which agent interactions are dependent upon ethnic and political identity and the congruence between the two. As predicted there was a strong positive correlation between how accurately ethnic identity reflected political identity and the level of ethnically motivated violence in the simulation, although the relationship was not linear. Furthermore the effect of a shift in congruence was found to be roughly comparable to the effect of initialising agents with a moderate level of pre-existing ethnic antagonism

    Comparative molecular genetics of the German Shepherd dog

    Includes bibliographical references (leaves 105-111).Microsatellite markers were used to measure genetic diversity and population differentiation within and between domestic dog breeds. The German Shepherd Dog was compared with typical outbred mongrel dogs, Dachshunds, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and a cohort of other pedigreed dogs representing 30 recognised breeds. Although archaeological records report that grey wolves (Canis lupus) were domesticated approximately 14 000 years ago, mtDNA analysis suggests that domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) and grey wolves diverged in multiple events over 100 000 years ago. Subsequently, the movement of humans and their dogs resulted in extensive gene flow between dog populations for thousands of years. Breeding practices to obtain distinctive pnenotypic uniformity were recently introduced, resulting in pure-bred dogs becoming essentially closed gene pools. However, further mtDNA analyses have reported unexpectedly high levels of variability, supported by microsatellite loci with heterogeneities of between 36% and 55% being reported for some dog breeds. Microsatellite analyses of 15 polymorphic canine loci are reported. German Shepherd Dogs and outbred mongrel dogs expressed diversity values of 4.0 alleles per locus in the former and 6.4 in the later (corrected for population size by jack-knifing with 1 000 pseudoreplications), with expected heterozygosities of 62% and 83%, respectively. German Shepherd Dogs showed a moderate loss of genetic diversity relative to outbred dogs, but not sufficient to describe the breed as highly inbred. However, in comparison with other pure-bred dogs examined, they expressed the least genetic diversity, with Dachshunds having 5.2, Staffordshire Bull Terriers 4.8 and the composite group of pedigreed dogs 6.0 alleles per locus, with expected heterozygosities of 72%, 67% and 80%, respectively. Significant population differentiation (GST = 0.103; RST = 0.058) between German Shepherd Dogs and the outbred dogs illustrates the effect of genetic drift since the breed was established just over 100 years ago. This study would benefit future breeding programs, as management should be facilitated by knowledge of relative measures of inbreeding and differentiation, especially between various separate breeding stocks within the breed

    Double-clad structures and proximity coupling for diode-bar-pumped planar waveguide lasers

    We report, for the first time, fabrication of double-clad planar waveguide structures and their use for multiwatt, diode-bar-pumped, planar waveguide lasers based on Nd3+ and Yb3+-doped YAG. The direct-bonded, five-layer structures of sapphire, YAG, and rare-earth-doped YAG have sufficient numerical aperture to capture the fast-axis divergence of a diode bar by proximity coupling with no intervening optics, leading to very simple and compact devices. The restriction of the doped region to the central core leads to diffraction-limited laser output in the guided direction. We also show that the direct-bonding fabrication process can lead to a linearly polarized output

    Ergonomic T-Handle for Minimally Invasive Surgical Instruments

    A T-handle has been designed to be used for minimally invasive implantation of a dynamic hip screw to repair fractures of the proximal femur. It is capable of being used in two actions: (i) push and hold (while using an angle guide) and (ii) application of torque when using the insertion wrench and lag screw tap. The T-handle can be held in a power or precision grip. It is suitable for either single (sterilised by γ-irradiation) or multiple (sterilised by autoclaving) use. The principles developed here are applicable to handles for a wide range of surgical instruments

    Kraichnan-Leith-Batchelor similarity theory and two-dimensional inverse cascades

    We study the scaling properties and Kraichnan-Leith-Batchelor (KLB) theory of forced inverse cascades in generalized two-dimensional (2D) fluids (α\alpha-turbulence models) simulated at resolution 819228192^2. We consider α=1\alpha=1 (surface quasigeostrophic flow), α=2\alpha=2 (2D vorticity dynamics) and α=3\alpha=3. The forcing scale is well-resolved, a direct cascade is present and there is no large-scale dissipation. Coherent vortices spanning a range of sizes, most larger than the forcing scale, are present for both α=1\alpha=1 and α=2\alpha=2. The active scalar field for α=3\alpha=3 contains comparatively few and small vortices. The energy spectral slopes in the inverse cascade are steeper than the KLB prediction (7α)/3-(7-\alpha)/3 in all three systems. Since we stop the simulations well before the cascades have reached the domain scale, vortex formation and spectral steepening are not due to condensation effects; nor are they caused by large-scale dissipation, which is absent. One- and two-point pdfs, hyperflatness factors and structure functions indicate that the inverse cascades are intermittent and non-Gaussian over much of the inertial range for α=1\alpha=1 and α=2\alpha=2, while the α=3\alpha=3 inverse cascade is much closer to Gaussian and non-intermittent. For α=3\alpha=3 the steep spectrum is close to that associated with enstrophy equipartition. Continuous wavelet analysis shows approximate KLB scaling E(k)k2\mathcal{E}(k) \propto k^{-2} (α=1\alpha=1) and E(k)k5/3\mathcal{E}(k) \propto k^{-5/3} (α=2\alpha=2) in the interstitial regions between the coherent vortices. Our results demonstrate that coherent vortex formation (α=1\alpha=1 and α=2\alpha=2) and non-realizability (α=3\alpha=3) cause 2D inverse cascades to deviate from the KLB predictions, but that the flow between the vortices exhibits KLB scaling and non-intermittent statistics for α=1\alpha=1 and α=2\alpha=2. The results will appear in \cite{BurgessEA2015}, which has been accepted to the \emph{Journal of Fluid Mechanics}
